  • Logic Supply Powers IoT at the Edge – Intel® Chip Chat episode 664
Not all advanced computing takes place in data centers.
Maxx Garrison, product manager with Logic Supply, talked with Chip Chat about how the Internet of Things (IoT) is evolving and advantages that come with moving compute power to the edge with help from Intel technology.
Logic Supply’s sealed systems turn up in demanding settings where contamination is a concern – farms, factories, hospitals, emergency vehicles – close to users and environmental data.
As applications get smarter, data is coming from a variety of sources, and the amount is increasing. Sending it to the cloud can be expensive, and transmission can be a liability in decision-critical situations that demand low latency.
The ability to gather, analyze, and deliver information quickly makes computing at the edge vital, and also opens complex use cases, like sensor fusion, where visual, thermal, and vibration data from local and remote sensors are combined and run through models. Sensor fusion with edge AI could expand what systems can do autonomously.
Garrison sees data, sensors, and inputs continuing to increase, with systems advancing to meet the growing demand for intelligent compute at the edge. Logic Supply’s goal is to make input easy and, whatever the application, scale up seamlessly without rewriting or retraining models. They’re already getting close with the Intel® Distribution of OpenVINO™ toolkit, and they’re adding compute-intensive capabilities to their entire line of edge products, from entry-level devices to the high end, which features 2nd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors.

  • Moving AI from the Data Center to the Edge – Intel® Chip Chat episode 663
As AI expands into the mainstream, how will it succeed at the edge? Matt Jacobs, Senior VP Commercial Systems, Penguin Computing, Inc. talks about the growth of AI, its move from the data center, and easing customers into the edge space.
An established leader in data center and HPC solutions, Penguin takes a system-level view of the move to AI, a trend they’ve seen developing over the past two years. In the next 18 months, symbiotic technologies will be converging to create “real growth opportunity,” in Jacobs’ words.
Deploying AI at the edge comes with its own needs, and they differ from those of traditional data centers. Easily maintained low-power environments well-tuned for workloads are key, and the spread of processing power from the data center to the near-edge to the far-edge calls for software that can ensure workload portability.
New compute platforms, like 2nd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors with built-in AI acceleration, suit the unique requirements of workloads at the edge. Upcoming Intel “One API” software, which will simplify programming diverse computing engines, will support targeting workloads at various levels of capability.

  • How to Protect Critical Data within Your Cloud Infrastructure – Intel® Chip Chat episode 662
In this episode of Intel Chip Chat, Pat Conte, Senior VP of Global Business Development at HyTrust talks about the ever-evolving security landscape and the work they are doing to deliver a more secure cloud infrastructure. HyTrust is a cybersecurity company focused on locking down virtual infrastructure that support all cloud environments, and protecting the critical data within the cloud workloads. Security is a top priority for IT managers, and HyTrust partners with Intel to help secure the underlying infrastructure. Pat chats about BoundaryControl, a HyTrust solution that integrates Intel® Trusted Execution Technology (Intel TXT) and Intel® Trusted Platform Modules (Intel TPM) technologies to essentially put a boundary around a designated server or servers to help ensure that workload is only getting executed on the server that you designate it to. New capabilities and evolving landscape gives Intel and HyTrust the opportunity to enhance encryption and geo-fencing and adopt new Intel® Security Technologies, like the 2nd Generation Intel® Xeon Scalable Processors with Intel® Security Libraries for Data Centers (Intel® SecL–DC).

  • Tackling Massive Scientific Challenges with AI/HPC Convergence – Intel® Chip Chat episode 661
Brandon Draeger, Senior Director of Product Marketing at Cray, joins Chip Chat to discuss the unique needs of HPC customers and how new Intel® technologies in Cray systems are helping to deliver improved performance and scalability.
The Cray CS500 supercomputer includes standard rack configurations, a variety of cooling options, and a flexible software stack for users who are still investigating HPC deployments or just starting out. The XC50 that is more customizable with higher bin CPUs, accelerators, and custom interconnects as well as deployment support from Cray. Both lines are built to meet the core challenges facing HPC customers today.
More and more, we are seeing the convergence of AI and HPC – users investigating how they can use AI to complement what they are already doing with their HPC workloads. This includes using machine and deep learning to analyze results from a simulation, or using AI techniques to steer where to take a simulation on the fly.
One of the 2nd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor features that Brandon is excited about is Intel® Deep Learning Boost, which accelerates deep learning inference performance. Cray sees this as benefitting customers like those working with cryo-microscopy – taking hundreds of thousands of images at the structural level to test things like new drug treatments. Cryo-microscopy consumes a lot of memory, but is boosted by the improved DL inference performance.
Brandon finishes his visit by discussing the upcoming Aurora exascale class system targeted for delivery to Argonne National Lab in 2021. It will feature future Intel technologies, as well as the Cray Shasta architecture to tackle the most mind-boggling human challenges.

  • AI at the Edge – Intel® Chip Chat episode 659
This is the moment for AI at the edge. That’s the view of Fabrizio Del Maffeo, Vice President and Managing Director for AAEON Technology Europe. He spoke with Chip Chat about AI trends his company sees emerging worldwide.
A leading manufacturer of advanced industrial and embedded computing platforms, AAEON brought intelligence to industrial controls. Today, it supports artificial intelligence and sponsors UP Bridge The Gap*, a user community for established companies starting to use AI.
There’s more data and more video at the edge than ever before, says Del Maffeo, and it must be processed at the edge rather than in the cloud because of security, privacy, and bandwidth limitations.
Algorithms running in the cloud must run on completely different architectures at the edge. AAEON has embraced Intel technology, particularly the Intel® Distribution of OpenVINO™ toolkit for porting code between platforms, something vital for customers moving from low-cost industrial architecture to high-performance Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors, including the 2nd Generation family.
While porting algorithms from cloud to edge is not yet plug-and-play, Del Maffeo foresees stronger integration between tools at the edge, including tools for cloud, machine learning, and deep learning – like TensorFlow* and CAFFE*.

  • Accenture Helps Data-Intensive Customers Get Faster Time to Insight – Intel® Chip Chat episode 658
Accenture has partnered with Intel to provide Intel® Optane™ DC persistent memory to its SAP HANA clients. In this episode, we talk with Jolie LeBlanc, Business Strategy Manager in the Semiconductor Practice at Accenture Strategy, about the partnership, the challenges and opportunities Accenture clients face with their in-memory databases, and how Intel® OptaneTM DC persistent memory can help. As one of the first system integrators with a comprehensive understanding of how to use and manage this new technology, Accenture has a unique perspective on how SAP HANA users can capitalize on this new technology category.
The challenge many SAP HANA users face is that the ever-increasing database size drives up infrastructure costs and/or restricts users from keeping all relevant working data sets in their SAP HANA in-memory database – which limits the value users can derive from it. This is where Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory comes in.
Based on Accenture’s testing, LeBlanc describes the benefits of persistent memory for SAP HANA users, including the potential for several large data sets to fit into memory rather than storage. Accenture clients can now process data faster to achieve faster business insights. And due to persistence, there is less waiting for data loading.
