  • Delivering an Unmatched Portfolio for 5G Network Infrastructure - Intel® Chip Chat episode 691
Dan Rodriguez, Corporate Vice President and General Manager for the Network Platforms group at Intel, joins Chip Chat to update on Intel's strategy and solutions for transforming network infrastructure for 5G.
In this interview, Rodriguez and host Allyson Klein dig in to Intel's announcements from February 24th, 2020, which expanded Intel's unmatched portfolio of solutions for network infrastructure. Rodriguez highlights updated 2nd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors, the critical component fueling network transformation and the delivery of new services. The latest 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors deliver 36% more performance and 42% more performance per dollar compared to the prior generation [1].
Rodriguez also shares excitement over Intel Atom® P5900, a new 10nm System on a Chip (SoC) with the right mix of compute cores, connectivity, and acceleration to power 5G radio access network base stations well into the future. Intel Atom P5900 is already seeing significant interest from the industry and end customers and is expected to help Intel achieve a leading 40% market segment share for base station silicon by 2021, one year earlier than previously forecast.
Finally, Rodriguez discusses two new complementary technologies: Intel structured ASIC codenamed "Diamond Mesa" and Intel Ethernet 700 Series Network Adapter XXV710-DA2T with Hardware-Enhanced Precision Time Protocol. Less complex than a true ASIC and less expensive and more power efficient than an FPGA, Diamond Mesa targets 50% more performance or 50% better power efficiency versus the previous generation. The new Intel Ethernet 700 Series is Intel's first 5G-optimized network adapter and enables accurate time synchronization across the network without the added complexity and expense of specialty timing hardware for 5G, industrial, and financial applications.

  • Data-Centric Solutions for the 5G and Data Eras - Intel® Chip Chat episode 690
Jennifer Huffstetler, Vice President, Data Platforms Group, and General Manager, Strategy, Xeon and Memory Group at Intel, joins host Allyson Klein to update on Intel’s data-centric strategy for network transformation and share news on additions to its unmatched portfolio of products for 5G network infrastructure. The latest updates continue to further Intel’s vision of enabling customers to do more with data, wherever data occurs.
This week, Intel introduced many exciting advances to enable network transformation from core to edge, headlined by the Intel Atom® P5900 processor, a a 10nm system-on-a-chip for wireless base stations, and expansion of Intel’s 2nd-gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor line-up. These latest processors deliver customers up to 36% higher performance [1] over the prior generation for our customers across their cloud, network, and edge needs.
Other announcements this week, including the launch of the new Intel Ethernet 700 Series network adapters with Hardware-Enhanced Precision Time Protocol (PTP), which increases the timing precision required for 5G networks through a combination of hardware and software enhancements, and the all-new structured ASIC codenamed “Diamond Mesa” for 5G networks, illustrate the unique breadth and depth of Intel’s 5G infrastructure portfolio. Diamond Mesa targets up to 2x the performance or half the power of its predecessor.

  • Reinventing the Memory-Storage Paradigm - Intel® Chip Chat episode 689
For decades computer scientists have recognized the need for memory to keep up with compute. Beginning in the 1940s engineers have had to balance how systems process information with how they store and access it. Since its introduction, 3Dx Point memory, the basis for Intel® Optane DC Persistent Memory, has helped mitigate one of the biggest bottlenecks to performance.
Frank Hady is a fellow and Director of Storage Technology Group, Intel. In this episode of Chip Chat he and host Allyson Klein explore the relationship of memory and storage to compute, and outlines how Intel is helping accelerate performance throughout information ecosystems and re-invent the memory storage paradigm in systems.

  • WP Engine Boosts Web Performance and Customer Success - Intel® Chip Chat episode 688
On this episode of Chip Chat, founder and CTO of WP Engine, Jason Cohen, discusses the future of web hosting and how his company passes performance onto his customers.
WP Engine is one of the largest Wordpress hosting sites and helps marketers reach customers quickly and effectively online. The most important factor for website success is speed as a slow website can result in fewer visits and fewer conversions. There are many factors to consider when increasing site speed but underlying all of these variables is the processor powering the experience.
Cohen's team recently upgraded their cloud capabilities to Google Cloud's compute optimized instances, leveraging Intel® 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable processors. Learn more about how this has benefitted WP Engine customers in this 13-minute podcast.

  • Breaking Down the Hype of Cloud to Edge – Intel® Chip Chat episode 687
Cloud to edge is much hyped as the next wave of digital transformation, and edge computing promises to remove many of the limitations of public and private cloud. But you need to have common, seamless frameworks to work at the edge, on premises, and in public cloud. Talal Alqinawi explains what Microsoft is doing to enable this and how enterprises can make cloud to edge part of their digital strategy.
He goes on to explain why the time is right for enterprise edge. IT doesn’t sit in one data center, and it’s not one type of application. It is a set of connected applications and activities that have to work together. Having recognized that, many businesses have interactive applications with their clients. They must service their businesses, their clients, and even their supply chains to become one connected community. This is the intelligent edge. Talal also offers practical steps enterprises can take to get started in their cloud to edge journey.
Talal Alqinawi is the Senior Director of Product Marketing for Microsoft Azure. He leads product management and marketing teams for advanced workloads in Microsoft Azure including Azure Stack, Azure Data Box, HPC, and SAP in Azure.
