Intellectual Roundtable episodes

  • "Are science and religion compatible?" and "What are you waiting for?"

Two more questions from the blog Intellectual Roundtable are presented by your podcast hosts:

Lee's question is "Are science and religion compatible?" Sometimes, it seems that science and religion are at odds with one another, particularly when a scientific theory challenges existing religious dogma. But some of the greatest scientists throughout history have been deeply religious people. Can the two co-exist, or are they destined to be in disagreement with each other?

Michael spotlights the more recent question "What are you waiting for?" This question can be cause for introspection, if you examine your own behavior to see what aspects of your life are obstacles for change and growth. It can also be seen, however, as a call to action, to try and overcome those obstacles.

Both Michael and Lee offer up their answers to these two very different questions, and welcome your additional answers at intellectualroundtable.com.

  • "How do you define success?" and "Is happiness the most important purpose in life?"

Two questions are discussed in this podcast, one from each host, Michael and Lee. The questions are culled from the archive of the Intellectual Roundtable blog. This episode's two questions are:

    How do you define success?

Lee makes the point that it is difficult to reach a goal without first deciding what that goal happens to be. So the first step for any project -- no matter how large or how small -- should be to define what success looks like. For example, what does it mean to you to live a successful life?

Is happiness the most important purpose in life?

This question was Michael's first-ever question at Intellectual Roundtable, and over the years it has proven to be the most popular question ever posted. Lee and Michael both talk about why this questions means so much to them, and conjecture what it is that resonates so much with others.

  • "What book has had the biggest impact on you?" and "How do you show thanks?"

Hosts Michael and Lee revisit questions with personal significance from Intellectual Roundtable, first posted years ago. This week's questions are as follows:

What book has had the biggest impact on you?

A book can be a powerful method to transport the reader to another time and place, or allow her or him to see the world through someone else's eyes. As a result, for many people books hold a special place in their memories. Both Lee and Michael share some of their favorites.

    How do you show thanks?

Displaying gratitude can be a great way to bring more positivity into the world, and the world can always use more positivity. Michael and Lee discuss ways they have shared thanks with someone else, and what it means to both giver and receiver.

  • "What beliefs do you have that might be wrong?" and "What makes a place feel like home?"

Each week, Michael and Lee will discuss two questions originally posted on the Intellectual Roundtable blog. This week:

What beliefs do you have that might be wrong?

Lee asks this provocative question that might just make you reevaluate your very life. It is very easy to assume that someone you disagree with is wrong, and that you are in the right. However, the other person is certain of the same thing. One of you has to be wrong, and what if it is you? Are you willing to accept the possibility that you are incorrect in how you think about a particular topic or idea?

What makes a place feel like home?

The concept of "home" is a very powerful one. For many people, home means security or safety. But others don't share that same feeling. What about you? What qualities evoke the sense of home for you? Is it a place, a person, or something physical? Or an emotion or feeling that gives you the sense of home? Michael shares the story of a project that he organized years ago that was very moving and powerful about this very topic.
