  • Hope and Opportunities for the Retail Investor

On today’s Intelligent Money Minute, we’ll interview Larry Swedroe on hope for the retail investor. Because retail investors tend to struggle to outperform, we want to ask Larry what opportunities are available for them. Larry believes there are great opportunities for retail investors. Academics have converted Alpha into data that allows retail investors to invest “like Warren Buffet.” This is due to academics basing their investment philosophy on research, a.k.a. factor-based investing. Typically, there are extra or unique risks (independent factors) present with factor-based investing. Therefore, these investments have delivered above-average returns. Between 300-600 factors have been identified (as mentioned in Larry’s book). However, we tend to only think that there is a handful worth investing in.
If you are an Intelligent Investor who wants to explore Factor-based investing, go to our blog page. Also, you can check out Larry Swedroe’s book Your Complete Guide to Factor-Based Investing here.
We’ll be interviewing Larry on several podcasts regarding markets, passive investing, and diversification, so be sure to subscribe to our Intelligent Money Minute podcasts.
Larry was among the first authors to publish a book that explained the science of investing in layman’s terms, “The Only Guide to a Winning Investment Strategy You’ll Ever Need.” He has since authored seven more books.

This growth provided good-paying jobs to dozens of people and allowed Rick to take on business partners with whom he generously shared his equity.
Ferri Investment Solutions is Rick’s new firm. This modern concept provides even greater value to investors by “unbundling” adviser services whereby clients pay only for the time it takes to assist them. In addition, Rick’s industry consulting firm helps other advisers build their investment practices, and he has launched Core-4 Portfolios to provide simple model portfolios for use by a wide variety of investors.

  • How to Integrate Charitable Giving

On today’s Intelligent Money Minute, we’ll interview John Putnam on how to integrate charitable giving. John discusses ideas on how to encourage charitable giving within your family. First, John states that communication is key for families deciding on how to give. He encourages families to talk about their passions and concerns. Specifically, he encourages family members to talk among themselves. For example, a husband and wife or mom and dad communicating about charitable giving is a great start. These conversations can be the light to shine on a passion or a concern another family member may find important. Second, John discusses charitable projects. Giving an example, he suggests a group effort from individual family members. Each family member may contribute to what he or she has discovered about an organization.
We’d love to help your family explore different charitable options. we’ve included resources and a link to the National Christian Foundation which you can check out by going here.

  • Widowhood is Like a Butterfly

On today’s Intelligent Money Minute, we’ll interview Kathleen Rehl on how widowhood is like a butterfly. Kathleen discusses the butterfly’s transformation in her book. She speaks of how we all know the basics of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. However, part of the transformation process is quite different than we would expect. Within a cocoon, you would find the caterpillar liquified into what is called “goop.” This “goop” is amazingly what will one day become a beautiful butterfly. Kathleen explains that the butterfly must struggle on its own to come out of its cocoon to soon fly. Likewise, widowhood can be explained in this light. Kathleen describes widowhood as this “meltdown” process. Widows go through a similar “grief goop.” Most noteworthy is that a widow goes through this process in order to become a beautiful butterfly.
As Kathleen mentioned, the process of widowhood can sometimes feel like “goop” because of the different struggles faced during grief. At Intelligent Investing, we have a webpage dedicated to widows and you can learn more by going to investedwithyou.com/widows. If there is anything we can do to help you transform, please let us know. We will be interviewing Kathleen on many more episodes of Widowhood, so be sure to subscribe to Intelligent Money Minute so you don’t miss them.
On upcoming podcasts, Kathleen will talk about the three stages of widowhood- Grief, Growth, and Grace, so be sure to subscribe by clicking here.

  • Greed & Chasing Alpha

On today’s Intelligent Money Minute, we’ll interview Larry Swedroe on how greed and chasing alpha makes it difficult to outperform. We’ll discuss how there has been a change in the landscape due to the increase in money chasing. Larry points out the fact that there were almost no hedge funds in the 1950s. However, he talks of the “Golden Era” of hedge funds around the turn of the century. There was a growing increase in the number of mutual funds and the generating of big alpha. As money began pouring in, much of alpha began to lose value. This was due to the small amount of money, and factors not being well-known or exploited. Consequently, today much of alpha has been converted into beta and eliminated. This over-crowding resulted in more money, more competition, and fewer victims. As a result, these factors ultimately raised hurdles for active managers.
At Intelligent Investing, we believe in the importance of independence and not chasing after alpha. We understand that independent bookstores and independent coffee shops have a different feel from Barnes and Noble and Starbucks. Independent financial firms have a different feel from big-name investment firms. We are locally owned and operated boutique wealth management firm, and feel this keeps us close to those we serve.
We’ll be interviewing Larry on several podcasts regarding markets, passive investing, and diversification, so be sure to subscribe to our Intelligent Money Minute podcasts.
