Merci: Hi, and welcome to a Day in a Life of a Coach. This is Merci Miglino and today, I’m talking to Anshu Patanjali from Bangalore, India. How are you?
Anshu: Hi, Merci, I’m good. How are you?
Merci: I’m good, I’m good. We’ve never met before, so to speak, face-to-face, but it’s been a real pleasure to get to know Anshu. She is a grad of ICA 2011. She is a certified professional coach and she is a founder and trainer at Live Leadership which I’ll let her tell you about.
Today, we’re going to talk to you a little bit about you, how you found coaching, what’s in your coaching tool box and what are you doing now, now that you’ve graduated and you’re out there in the world. First, how do you find coaching?
Anshu: Well, Merci, I’ve always had a passion to inspire people to believe in themselves, to dream big, to work hard to achieve their goals and live their best lives and become their best selves. In order to pursue that passion I first got trained to become a training professional. I was doing better as a trainer, but then one day I talked to myself…what’s my next level? Is that it, is that all that I am going to do? No, that’s not what I wanted and I wanted to move on, I wanted to upscale myself.
That’s when I went online to search for the other certification programs that I had to take up. That’s where I found ICA and the Certified Professional Coach Program. To be honest, when I first read about coaching, I did not quite understand it. It took me sometime. I studied it and I spoke with my enrollment….know about coaching…really understood the meaning of it. I was like wow, that really is the next level because if you think about it, it’s training in some way limits you. The best that you can do is that you can transfer the knowledge, you can inspire people to take action, but what after that? You don’t know whether that’s being translated, right? Coaching…coaching really places you right next to them, right? You have to follow to work with them. You can work with them on setting their goals, you can work with them especially in implementing that knowledge that they’ve gained through their experience.
Merci: Yeah, yeah, I can see what you’re saying especially many of our students have come from training with the singular desire to maybe sustain learning for people, help them when they’re right in the middle of it and it kind of works hand in hand. One could train with a coach approach.
Anshu: That’s exactly what I do. In most of my training sessions I have a coaching approach and I love that, I love that. I think you become a better trainer asking the questions, listening to those answers carefully and then helping them smash the assumptions that they are making.

Anshu: I think essentially that coaching is a skill. It’s a way of communicating with people to bring out the best in them.
Merci: Yeah, a way of communicating, definitely. I think it’s very enriched communication skills and training, wow! I had that experience myself and I absolutely agree that it really enhances training even if you never taught coaching. People notice a little bit of a difference in the classroom.
Merci: So, when you came to the International Coach Academy, you created a number of tools, a coaching model, we call them power tools, tell me a little bit about yours.
Anshu: The power tools that I submitted at that time was Excellence Versus Perfection. There’s a more powerful one that I’ve created now and it seems to be working really great for me. It’s called Liberation Versus Independence. If you think about it, it’s a very simple concept to understand. Independence has more to do with the outside, whether there is something limiting you on the outside, whether it’s people or situations, circumstances, challenges in the outside world, but Liberation is more to do with the inside. Do you feel free to be able to do what you really want? Do you feel free to be able to take actions that you want to take? Do you feel free to make that next move in your career? Do you feel free to be working on things that you really love? If you’re not, then what is it that’s really stopping you? If you allow the coaches to answer that they come up with not answers like it’s the people around me or the rejection.
Sometimes they’re just assuming, sometimes it’s all very strong, limiting beliefs. I think what’s required for them is to smash all these limiting beliefs, things that hold them back and once they do that, I think, that is what sets them free. That reason…it’s so powerful that after that they are free to do whatever it is that they want. It gives them a lot of courage to take the actions that they want to take and that’s the idea that I wanted to work on. I’ve used this topic over a lot of my coaching and just work and live with them.
Liberation vs Independence; what is limiting you inside and out [Click to Tweet!]
Merci: Sounds great, yeah, how liberating, absolutely! Wonderful! Let me ask you this, if you can tell the world one thing about coaching, what would it be?
Anshu: Alright, if I have to tell one thing about coaching I would have to clarify a misconception that people have about coaching, certainly. A lot of people think that coaching is for people who have a troubled life who want to make significant changes in a troubled life and make it better. But to be honest that’s not what it is. Coaching is what anyone wants to achieve more in life or in our career or at work.
So, if you’re a person who wants to achieve a goal faster, coaching is for you. If you are person who wants to realize a dream, coaching is for you. If you’re a person who wants to make an important decision and needs support, coaching is for you. So, to sum it up, coaching is for a person who wants to live a life of their dream. If you want to live a life that you will be proud of, coaching is for you and all that a coach demands from you is just that you should be able to believe in yourself and be that you should be willing to do the work that is required.
Coaching is not just for the troubled but for those who wants more [Click to Tweet!]
Merci: Yeah, yeah, it takes commitment and it takes action.
Anshu: Actually, absolutely, and the most important to do, and it’s not hard.
Merci: Not with the coach, it’s not. Oh, I like that. Thank you so much, Anshu. This has been a pleasure and is there anywhere people can find out a little more about Live Leadership and Anshu, yourself?
