Diabetes is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and risk factor management is an integral part of diabetes management because it improves outcomes.

In this ‘on demand’ session, Professor Stephen Fava, Consultant Diabetologist and head of the Diabetes Endocrine Unit at Mater Dei Hospital gives an overview of the importance of risk factor modification in Type 2 Diabetes.

In this session you will learn how a 1% drop in HbA1c, leads to a 14 % drop in risk of myocardial infarction and a 12% drop in risk of stroke. 

You will learn about the importance of both HbA1c and glucose variability are separate risk factors for cardiovascular disease and the importance of avoidance of both hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemic episodes. You will learn about the importance of lifestyle interventions, Blood pressure control and statin therapy, irrespective of lipid levels.
