Sometimes the fashions and fads come and go, but then we see them again a few years later. Let's talk about interpreting fads and fashions, shall we? What's old today, may be new tomorrow. Theories, models, topics, ethical standards, they all come and go, change and re-change. Why? Let's discuss it.

Send me a Voicemail or Text!

What is feedback? What do we do with it? Why? All this in today's episode with me, Tim Curry.

  • IW 131: InterpreTips: Gracious Interpreters Gratefully Sarcastic

Send me a Voicemail or Text!

Be kind. Be gracious. Be sarcastic. No, wait...

Today's short InterpreTip says all it needs to say. We all need support and compliments.

Sometimes it's hard to just say thank you. Sometimes we don't know how to acknowledge gratitude for what we do.

After a discussion in the IW Community, I had to make this episode to think about why we sometimes hesitate or dismiss a "Thank you". Or worse, we try to preach about our profession when it wasn't necessary. How do you handle it?

Send me a Voicemail or Text!

"Wow, I'm good! ... Oh, oops, keep working!"

There are moments we realize we were given something good. Today we talk about remembering those wonderful people who have taught us so much, have supported us in ways that may even be surprising.

Let's talk about gratitude. Nives Gotovac from Croatia and Joni Bice from the U.S. share some moments in their lives that helped them grow. Stories like this remind us to reflect on our own lives so we too can show gratitude, thankfulness to those who have influenced us.

Send me a Voicemail or Text!

"You keep using that word. I don't think you know what that means."

Sometimes we know so much about something that we don't know how to stop talking about it. Today we take a funny look at how sign language interpreters sometimes try to explain our profession in too much detail. We like our jargon, our terminology, or linguistics.

There is a time and place for such talk and we need to remember that.

  • IW 128: InterpreTips: Experience Preparation Quality

Send me a Voicemail or Text!

How did you do that?! Is it magic?

Sign language interpreters need to prepare for their gigs. How do they do that when they have little information about the assignment? Well, preparation is does not start when we accept the assignment, it starts way before that.

This episode discusses the art of reflection, learning from our past, stopping the bad historical cycles, and improving our work.

  • IW 127: InterpreTips: One Role to Rule Them All

Send me a Voicemail or Text!

Role, role, role, what is role?

We debate, discuss, argue, manipulate, sneer and roll our eyes at the topic of the Interpreter's Role. Knowing what our role is helps us define the principles by which we make professional and ethical decisions as an interpreter.

I now discuss the possibility that we no longer need to debate it. We can move on. We have a role right in front of us and we have the tools to analyze it now. What are you waiting for? Roll up, roll up, roll up, our role is here!

  • IW 126: InterpreTips: Interpreter, Interpret Thyself

Send me a Voicemail or Text!

To be or not to be true to yourself! That is the topic today.

How do we do what we do and be our authentic selves? Are we hiding behind the interpretation or suppressing who we are? Are we changing ourselves for the better?

We need to self-reflect and interpret who we are on a regular basis to assess how we are doing personally, and professionally. This not only ensures we improve our skills in the profession, but also reminds us of who we are and to give ourselves permission to let go of the situations we find ourselves in when interpreting.
