In this deeply honest episode Laurie sits down with Alexis, host of When the Bough Breaks, for a vulnerable conversation about breaking free from high-control religion, surviving a narcissistic family system, and learning to rebuild a life from the inside out.
Alexis shares what it was really like to leave a cult, walk away from family, and step into therapy for the first time after years of fear, guilt, and conditioning. Together, we talk about the lifelong impact of narcissistic parents, why adult children of narcissists often feel like they’re “always in trouble,” and the courage it takes to deconstruct your beliefs and reclaim your identity.
This episode is full of hope, healing, and hard-won wisdom. We explore

Alexis Arralynn is a survivor, and creator who brings raw honesty and empathy to every conversation she hosts. As the voice behind When the Bough Breaks Podcast, she explores the realities of family estrangement and the quiet resilience it takes to rebuild your life and identity when the people who raised you become distant.
Drawing from her own lived experiences as a survivor of narcissistic abuse, cult control, and generational trauma, Alexis speaks with a compassion that only comes from living through the fire herself. Her podcast has become a space where others can finally exhale, reflect, and be reminded that estrangement isn’t the end of the story — it’s often where healing begins.
When she’s not recording, Alexis spends time with her children and works as a photographer/filmographer, and cleaning business owner in the Pacific Northwest. She continues to advocate for self-worth, safe boundaries, and finding your voice by helping her listeners and clients alike rediscover what “home” really means.
