Interrupting Racism episodes

  • MS2E1: Take Care: Black People Seek Therapy Too

In this episode, we're kickstarting the Take Care Mental Health Miniseries with stories from me. I'm getting a little vulnerable and talking about my journey to therapy. Black people, and other people of color seek therapy too; don't let anyone convince otherwise!

Join me for a candid conversation about my experiences and some stats about mental health in the U.S. I'm not diving too deep into the statistics but I wanted to lay out some numbers for you all. Thank you for joining me on this journey, I hope you enjoy this and all of the episodes to come in this mental health miniseries.

    Recommendation of the Week

Alexandria suggests - advice - Do your research and start seeking the help you require! If you have been thinking about getting a therapist it is time to go and do so. And if you are not yet ready to go that route, try getting in touch with your emotions by journaling each day and writing what's going on around you and in your head.

  • Miniseries (MS) 2: Take Care, A Mental Health Awareness Series

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and all month long we are normalizing and destigmatizing mental health issues, therapy and holistic care. The sad truth is that mental health is just not taken as seriously as it should be. As a member of the Black community, I am all too familiar with the ways in which these issues get written off, dismissed or simply not believed.

My aim is to interrupt the notion of "just get over it". We need to be addressing the issues that affect us and working through them to become stronger, more whole individuals able to better navigate this world.

Join me for a month long adventure with 5 mental health professionals as we dive into mental health.

  • MS1E1: A Leap of Faith: You're Your Best Bet

If you've ever had a dream or simply an idea for yourself that you have possibly tried and failed at, maybe you have convinced yourself it was impossible before you ever even started; this miniseries is for you! Over the next several weeks, I am releasing mini episodes related to following your heart, pursuing your dreams and preparing yourself to do so. In order to see results you've never seen, you've gotta do things you've never done. Its time to take A Leap of Faith!

Today we're going to start with where to place your bets---on yourself! You're Your Best Bet is a glimpse at some of my experiences, times where I have conformed to "traditional" work but my creative pursuits have always pulled me back. I hope you join me on this journey and that you too decide to take A Leap of Faith.

    Recommendations of the Week

Alexandria's suggestions - Advice - First, get to making some lists about your goals, what is standing in the way of those goals and how to get around those obstacles. Second, listen to your intuition and the signs around you. Are you ignoring what you're being called to because it seems unconventional or out of reach? What is the universe, or God or spirit trying to tell you? Listen harder.

  • Miniseries (MS) 1: A Leap of Faith

If you've ever had a dream or simply an idea for yourself that you may have tried and failed at, or maybe you convinced yourself it was impossible before you ever even started; this miniseries is for you! It can be extremely difficult to move from dreaming of a new life to making it a reality. Everything in society teaches us to "play it safe", and for good reason. You shouldn't just up and quit your job with no real vision for how to pay bills and keep a roof over your head. But you should however create a plan for such a transition.

Over the next several weeks, I am releasing episodes related to following your heart, pursuing your dreams and preparing yourself to do so. In order to see results you've never seen, you've gotta do things you've never done. Its time to take A Leap of Faith! Join me for the first of many miniseries!

  • Professionalism, Unwritten Rules, and Why I No Longer Care

I have been in "the working world" for quite some time. Along the way, I've come to understand the way "professionalism" is perceived and used for better or for worse. In this episode, I got together with my friend Ellie to talk about this, the unwritten and unspoken rules we come across in the workplace and why I personally am no longer invested in this way of life.

At its core, professionalism is based in whiteness--white ideals about what is considered "proper", "respectable", "acceptable" and so on. The way we are expected to dress, wear our hair, color our nails, speak, interact with others--all of this is influenced by rules set forth by white, cis people, mostly men who created these standards. Join us for our conversation and hit me up on social media or email if it resonates with you.

    Recommendations of the Week

Ellie's suggestion - Advice -  Set yourself up to be in a better position to elevate your title and pay at work by taking note of the various ways you bring value to your company. They won't know what you do unless you tell them!

Alexandria's suggestion - Advice - Start or get back into a hobby of yours. This will help you break up the mundane of your everyday and have something to look forward to.
