Tomorrow marks the 32nd anniversary the Americans with Disability Act. Since its signing, the ADA has open doors for folks of various disabilities. On today’s A Public Affair, guest host Karma Chavez is joined by folks within the community who are shinning a light on the importance of recognizing and celebrating disability.
For the first half of today’s show, Jo Hsu joins us to talk about their forthcoming book, Constellating Home: Trans and Queer Asian American Rhetorics. In the book Jo centers their experience as a queer, trans, disabled, Asian American. Jo joins APA to discuss how the existing literature rarely encompasses all these identities. The book is set to be released Fall 2022 from Ohio State University Press.
In the second half, we have two guests from Disability Pride Madison (DPM), Jason Beloungy and Martha Siravo. Jason is the executive director of Access to Independence, which is a disability-led and run organization that helps people with disabilities develop skills and tools. Martha is the president of the mother-led organization, Madtown Mommas & Disability Advocates. She was also crowned Ms. Wheelchair Wisconsin 2020/21. DPM is hosting the Disability Pride Festival this Saturday, July 30th at Warner Park from 12-5.
