Becoming You

Interview #2 with Arya

Listen Later

By popular demand, in this episode of the Becoming You podcast, I welcome back my son Arya to get his take on the topics I cover on the show!

What do you think I do well as a parent?

Arya: You’re just really agreeable and I can come to you for anything.

What I love about you as a son is your sense of humor and boundless energy! I also love that you’ve been speaking up for yourself more and more lately. Now, what about your dad? What does he do well as a parent?

Arya: He’s also agreeable and he shares so much stuff in common with me like Legos and cars and computers.

What are some things I need to work on as a mom?

Arya: There’s not much to change. Well, you started to get into biking, which is nice. You’ve also been helping me with my YouTube stuff since you have your own channel.

I think I could be more patient. How about your dad?

Arya: I’d like him to be as patient as you, and for him to not jump to conclusions, which he tends to do a lot.

Knowing what you know about your dad and myself as parents, what kind of parent do you think you’re going to be?

Arya: I’m going to be laid back and do the same things you guys do which is set time together on weekends. I’ll also let them earn TV time and other stuff that they like. I want to stay off my phone and be as involved with them as I can.

You were scared of both of those things, but you were brave. Bravery means doing the things that you are scared to do. Do you think that the person fighting the dragon at the edge of the cliff is scared or not scared?

Arya: Scared!

Right! Brave doesn’t mean that you’re never scared. Brave means you do the thing that scares you anyway! The lesson here is that we can’t trust our mind to always be accurate.

Next question: What’s something that you’ve failed at?

Arya: Many things: riding a bike, video games, and other things. I also had this terrible semester in 5th grade. In 4th grade, we only had half-days. In 5th grade, it was double that. I’d never done a six-hour online class before, so it was a monumental change. I started to slip up and got Bs and Cs when I normally got As. I was tired and there was so much work. I wasn’t ready for it.

Did it ever occur to you to ask Mom and Dad for help?

Arya: Not really, ‘cause you would’ve been like, “Aw, come on. You could’ve done it yourself!” I’m always scared that you’ll keep checking up on me to catch mistakes. I know you don’t really do that, but for some reason, it feels like that.

I’m sorry about that. My intention is to help you and not catch you when you make a mistake. How do you deal with failures or recovering from mistakes?

Arya: When I spiraled in school, I took the experience and I personalized it so that I knew how to be better in the next semester. You can basically use a mistake as a springboard to get better. You can use a mistake to get better or you can keep making the same mistake and not jump on the springboard. I’ve made lots of mistakes over and over again, but a lot of the big mistakes I internalized and used as a springboard.

Do you have any questions for your mom?

Arya: How did you learn how to parent?

That’s a great question! There is no manual. The only manual that exists is what my parents did for me.
