Anne Willem Bijleveld is a Dutch humanitarian professional who served as a Special Envoy and Coordinator for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in the former Yugoslavia during the 1990s. In this role, he coordinated relief efforts during the Balkan conflicts, focusing on addressing the needs of refugees and displaced persons from regions such as Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. He facilitated the delivery of essential humanitarian aid, including fuel, and supported post-war peacebuilding efforts, including the reintegration of refugees and the preparation for elections.


Bijleveld is widely recognized for his contributions to refugee support and international relief work, ensuring that UNHCR and other organizations operated effectively under challenging conditions. He now serves as the chairman of the Sergio Vieira de Mello Foundation in Geneva, continuing his dedication to humanitarian causes.
