Ekber Menemencioğlu is a Turkish-Swedish former journalist who worked on international programs for public radio in Turkey. He studied at Robert College, an American educational institution in Istanbul. In the late 1970s, during the "boat people crisis" in Vietnam, he applied to join the UNHCR but was initially rejected. However, he was later hired and assigned to work in Quetta, Baluchistan, Pakistan. At UNHCR, he eventually served as the director for the CASWANAME region, covering North Africa, the Middle East, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia. Ekber reflects on some of the key moments of his career with the UNHCR in an interview with geneveMonde.ch.
