One of the most important lessons that being in relationships can teach us is how to serve another, how to love. It can, or should, remove us from self-centeredness and become more others focused. In a way it can move us to become more “Christlike”.

“For the son of man did not come to be served but to serve.” (Matthew 26:28)

For my whole life I was unaware that I was and often am still guilty of this sin in my relationships.  "If the core business of life is to love each other as God loves us, then a priority effort to play it safe interferes with the purpose of loving.  We were designed to love, and when we do, something good develops inside.  We feel clean, rich, whole.  Even better, we become less concerned with how we feel and more concerned with the lives of others.  But when a commitment to self-protection governs what we say, how we say it, and to whom then a nagging discomfort creeps through our soul that demands to be soothed." To avoid not feeling what needs to be felt, the pain, the ache, the heartache, the sin, we deprive ourselves of our desperate need for the gospel of Christ, which provides amazing hope, forgiveness, and a love that is unfathomable.  Instead of "running to" things of this world to "numb out" pain there is a better place to run to and that is in the arms of our Heavenly Father.
