Donal established SMP Financial in 2006 with Garfield Spollen where they advise business owners, professionals, individuals and families on optimising their financial planning. Pensions are a key part of their day to day business though financial planning is a broader practice where they look at the whole of a person's financial affairs and assist them in their life's journey. Donal comments on how he firmly believe that money, whilst not an end in itself, is something that must be carefully managed to facilitate life and provide an individual with choice particularly later in life.

Donal had the privilege to chair PIBA from 2014 to 2016 and was part of a small team that merged PIBA with the IBA to create Brokers Ireland which today represents 1,200 general insurance and financial broker firms throughout Ireland.
