He made the momentous decision to rebel, fleeing the capital Zhaoge to join the virtuous King Wen of Zhou in the west. His escape route took him through the famous "Five Passes." These were not just any passes; they formed a series of formidable fortress-gates guarding the western approaches to the Shang heartland.
