Sisters-in-Service

Invisible Women Veterans

Listen Later

Want to be a guest or know someone would be a great fit? I am looking for military vets, active duty, military brats, veteran service orgs or anyone in the fitness industry

Indivisible - impossible to divide or separate; consisting of one whole whose parts cannot be divided or treated individually

Invisible - not perceptible by vision; not openly acknowledged or made known

I have been wanting to speak on something that's been heavy on my mind for some time.  The Invisibility of women veterans. During a veteran holiday a few months back, I noticed the absence of women veterans in the news locally.  I started to wonder why we are not seen or recognized  by anyone  - including our veteran brothers.  I do have to say that not all of them are in the dark because some are very well versed on the trials and tribulations of women veterans.

In the military we worked collective to get the mission of the base completed.  We are recognized and rewarded for our hard work and dedication.

Upon leaving the military we are not seen, recognized or heard for our efforts as military veterans.

The stories of families not recognizing their  female members for they efforts because they did not deploy or fight in a war.  I was in during the Desert Shield/Desert Storm and will be damed if someone will not call  me a veteran.  The number of times we have to remind certain Veteran Service Organizations (VSO) that I AM THE VETERAN and the confrontations from civilians challenging our veteran status even with appropriate license plates and clothing clearly identifying us as veterans.

How does this happen? I live in North Carolina and I have to say that this state need to own up the fact that there are 295,000 veterans of which 84,000 are women and we as veterans get is the phrase "veteran friendly". I still don't know what that means.

States like Texas and California revere their veterans so why the difference?  Even with all the veteran organizations that are easily accessible on line? All the male dominated coffees and lunch get togethers are still the same - not sure that will ever change.

We are not seen as veterans because people don't see us on local television.  Can you honestly say that your local news is doing their job in making sure women veterans are seen and heard especially during veteran events and holidays?  It's always the same thing - they find a male veteran in the crown and not once do I see a female veteran being interviewed about their service or their feeling about having served .

So here's my challenge to you - on Veterans Day 2021 - check out your local news to see if you can find any women veterans who were interviewed in your area and let me know via social media or at https://www.podpage.com/sistefrs-in-service

I think once people start to see us one a regular basis  then maybe we will be indivisible again.
