On 21 March, we celebrate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observed annually on the day the police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid "pass laws" in 1960.
In Belgium and many other countries, complaints filed at police offices are often very low and statistics of hate crimes are not representing the reality. During this podcast episode, we speak with Davy and Marianne, who both work at a new, separate reception office ("loket haatmisdrijven") installed at the Police Zone of Ghent, Belgium. Davy and Marianne talk about anti-racism and -discrimination legislation, how the office wants to lower complaint barriers for victims of hate crime, victim support and the impact the office had so far. #FightRacism
On this year's International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, we celebrate their voices and mobilise against all forms of racial discrimination and injustice - to contribute to ensuring a safe environment, both off and online, for those who speak up.
For this episode, IOM Belgium and Luxembourg sits with two important voice on this topic in Belgium: welcome Willeke and Nyanchama of the NGO "Hand in hand against racism". They talk about their work on structural racism, decolonization, intersectionality, unlearning, and what role Hand in Hand vzw plays.
