Good morning. Iowa. I'm Aaron Jolly.
Step outside and you'll feel like you're walking on a movie set. The entire state is wrapped in thick fog this morning. Visibility has dropped to a quarter mile or less across northern Iowa, where a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 10 A.M. With temperatures sitting right at the freezing mark, watch for a few slick patches on the roads. We're currently at 39 degrees under those low clouds.
In the next 24 hours. Western Iowa wins the warmth prize today. You'll hit 55 degrees with that patchy fog burning off by mid-morning. Tonight stays dry with a low around 34.
Central Iowa remains gray and cloudy with a high near 51. Drizzle develops after 8 P.M. and lingers overnight. Low around 41.
Eastern Iowa starts with fog, then stays mostly cloudy. High near 52. Rain moves in after 11 P.M. Low around 41.
The Quad Cities deals with morning fog too. High near 49 under cloudy skies. Rain chances increase after 10 P.M. With a low around 42.
Thursday brings a big warm-up. Western Iowa hits 64 degrees under mostly sunny skies. Central Iowa reaches 63 with morning fog giving way to sun. Eastern Iowa and the Quad Cities top out in the upper 50s with some lingering clouds.
Here's the pattern for the week ahead. A potent storm system arrives Thursday night into Friday. Showers and thunderstorms are likely. And a few could be severe with large hail possible. Friday sees highs surge into the upper 60s to near 70 degrees — that's about 20 degrees above normal for early March. The weekend turns cooler but pleasant, with sunshine and highs in the 50s and 60s. Another chance of rain arrives by Tuesday.
Tonight's full moon will have to compete with all those clouds. We're gaining nearly three minutes of daylight each day now, with the spring equinox just two weeks away.
