Kingston Mayor Andrew Swaby is urging residents of Mona Commons, St. Andrew not to take matters into their own hands following the murder of Papine Market supervisor, 53-year-old Colleen “Sonnia” Bernard.

Ms. Bernard was shot and killed last Friday about 3:30 p.m. while reportedly carrying out her duties and collecting market fees from vendors at the Papine Market.

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness says the spending of funds donated to Jamaica in response to Hurricane Melissa must be thoroughly planned to ensure maximum and efficient usage. 

His comment comes amidst public concern that 1.8% of funds donated to the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management for hurricane relief had not been used.

President of the Small Business Association of Jamaica, Garnett Reid says if the island is hit by another hurricane this Atlantic season it will setback the nation's progress on commerce.
