The Government has assessed 1,293 businesses across the island since the passage of Hurricane Melissa, with the aim of rendering assistance. Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce Senator Aubyn Hill gave the update in the upper house this afternoon.

The Labour Ministry has intervened in a dispute between the Gleaner Company and production department workers, following reports that the media entity is moving ahead with a redundancy exercise, without having discussions with the trade union. The workers are represented by the Bustamamte Industrial Trade Union (BITU).

This in response to an offer by Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness during a recent visit to the storm ravaged area. Over US$70000 has been allocated under the Jamaica Resilient Recovery Initiative (JARRI) to accelerate livelihood recovery for youth farmers, fisherfolk, as well as Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMES) severely impacted by Hurricane Melissa. The grant, funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) multi-country office in Jamaica, is being channelled through the Jamaica 4-H Foundation 2016 Limited.

Approximately 60,000 National Water Commission, (NWC) customers remain without water in western Jamaica, following the passage of hurricane Melissa.
