'The hero' was the title of a workshop led recently by education consultant David Tuohy SJ for chaplains and people who work with youth in Jesuit schools. David proposed 'the heroic journey' as a model of personal development, one that could provide both young people and their mentors with a positive and clear narrative. The workshop was part of a conference, held in Manresa, Spain, addressing the issue of how to speak about Jesus in a world of increasingly diverse visions. The attendants came from all around Europe.

Irish Jesuit theologian Gerry O'Hanlon SJ has been reflecting on the recent extraordinary summit on clerical sexual abuse convened by Pope Francis in Rome, and attended by Cardinals and Bishops from all over the world. In this interview with Pat Coyle of Irish Jesuit Communications he welcomes the fact that a 'culture of denial' around the extent and impact of abuse was openly challenged at the summit. In that regard he cites the powerful address given by Nigerian nun, Veronica Openibo, head of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. Standing close to the Pope, she challenged the Bishops on their hypocrisy and mediocrity in responding to what is a crisis for the whole Church.

Brian Grogan SJ, author and facilitator on communal discernment, spoke with Pat Coyle of Irish Jesuit Communications about his recent trip to Rome. He is charged with writing a report on the decision making process in Rome, that resulted in Father General Arturo Sosa’s four Universal Apostolic Preferences for the Society of Jesus.

David Tuohy is a Jesuit and an Ecumenical Canon in the Church of Ireland. In  2015  he was asked my Archbishop Jackson to take part in his 'Come and See' project. This involved facilitating parishioners in Dublin and Glendalough in a 'bottom up' project, de-clericalising the concept of discipleship. Today he has co-authored a book about his experience and he talks to Pat Coyle of Irish Jesuit Communications about it.

Dr Michael O'Sullivan is a Jesuit and author of the book 'How Roman Catholic Theology Can Transform Male Violence against Women.' His workis described as “groundbreaking”, by Professor Linda Hogan of Trinity College Dublin. In this interview with Pat Coyle of Irish Jesuit Communications, Michael says that violence against women is a world-wide phenomenon, and that Christian and Catholic teaching must be called on how it has contributed to this. He also outlines how the gospel stories of the New Testament, and the actions of Jesus with women, can serve as a counter-cultural challenge to the prevailing oppression experienced by many women.
