Minister of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless opened Maynooth University's Digital Health Summer School, which unveiled a new vision for digital health in Ireland, outlined with demonstrations of 10 healthcare innovations that could revolutionise the Irish healthcare system.

Opening the Innovation Value Institute's 3rd International Digital Health Summer School, Minister Lawless said: "Today's event exemplifies higher education's potential to profoundly impact society, showcasing Maynooth University's commitment to innovation beyond academia."

The Summer School unveiled a digital health initiative, named Mission 10X, to deliver healthcare in Ireland that is 10 times faster, cheaper and smarter than that offered by the current system and that also enables comprehensive patient-managed care.

Speaking at the event, Professor Martin Curley, Director of the Digital Health Ecosystem at IVI, said: " "The best way to predict the future is to innovate it. We have all the knowledge and technology to build and scale a world-class health and wellness system - powered by open, intelligent technology and centred on patients, not paperwork."

He added that Mission 10X, which is based on 10 actionable recommendations, was fully aligned with Irish health strategy Sláintecare and its adoption would allow Ireland to leapfrog from last in Europe to world leader in digital health.

At the core of the new plan is SPINE, or Secure Patient Information Network Exchange, an individual electronic health record system which already supports over 15,000 patients in Ireland. It aims to improve patient outcomes, health economics, clinician experience and productivity by addressing patient information fragmentation.

Mission 10X recommends a phased investment in SPINE, starting with an initial €10 million feasibility study scaling to a €100 million nationwide deployment that would see every citizen offered a personal electronic health record.

Other healthcare innovations demonstrated at the two-day event which could form part of an integrated Irish digital health ecosystem, included:

An AI-integrated smartwatch capable of real-time fall detection, direct care operator communication and instant patient record updates

AI-driven screening technology deployable at pharmacies, GP practices, primary care centres and homes, to bring proactive screening into local settings

Voice AI technology providing multi-lingual communication and customised podcasts to improve patient understanding and adherence

Voicing support for the plan, Dr John Sheehan of Blackrock Health, said: "With a modest initial investment of €10 million, Ireland can create a scalable digital health system, mirroring Estonia's successful model. This is a historical opportunity we cannot afford to miss."

Others attending the Summer School included Danny McCoy, IBEC chief executive, who said: "Despite Ireland's wealth and EU digital rankings, we lag in digital healthcare. Mission 10X provides an essential leapfrog solution that we must adopt immediately."

Stephen McMahon, Head of the Irish Patients' Association, also backed the move to digital healthcare: "This is a digital health revolution - a beacon of hope and healing for patients today and future generations. Mission 10X shows that together, we truly can transform healthcare."

Allianz Ireland has leveraged Spotify to launch a new data-driven initiative that helps drivers take control of their mindset behind the wheel, simply by changing the beat.

Studies show that music can have a direct influence on how we drive. Songs with a fast tempo (over 120 beats per minute) can subconsciously encourage drivers to speed up and change lanes much more often. In contrast, music that matches the average resting heart rate (around 60-80 BPM) is associated with calmer, more focused driving.

The idea taps into growing public awareness: According to a nationally representative survey commissioned by Allianz Ireland in April 2025, over half of Irish adults believe that listening to music impacts how they drive. This belief is especially strong among younger adults (Gen Z), the group most likely to stream music while behind the wheel.

Research shows increased heart rate variability, higher mental workload, and more erratic driving patterns in response to faster music, making them particularly suited to benefit from a more mindful music curation approach.

That's why Allianz has turned to Spotify to launch 'Seat Belters', an in-app experience tool that creates a personalised playlist, based on the user's listening history, but with a lower beat per minute, for better driving.

A Soundtrack Designed for the Drive, that you'll love

Whether it's a school run or a road trip, music sets the tone. Allianz' and Spotify's new campaign on Spotify feature helps drivers tune into a more mindful, more aware pace that is just as enjoyable, for better driving.

Each playlist is unique, leveraging Spotify's unique streaming intelligence, but filtered for music in a calmer tempo range (60-80 BPM).

Mark Brennan, Chief Marketing Officer at Allianz Ireland, said:

"This initiative is about promoting a better driving experience by influencing driver behaviour through music. In a parked car, they use nothing but a dashboard and a drumbeat to demonstrate how changing tempo affects mindset, mood, and ultimately driving behaviour, making BPM instantly relatable and shareable. It's a fun but powerful way to show how we respond to rhythm behind the wheel.

Many businesses invest in AI expecting instant transformation, but technology alone doesn't create impact. Success depends on the framework that supports it. Without the right structure, roadmap and expert guidance, even the best AI investments will fall short.

Why do so many initiatives fall short? It often comes down to a disconnect between ambition and execution. Ambition drives investment, but execution requires clarity, focus and the right internal foundations.

In this article, we'll uncover how to close that gap. You'll see why success starts with asking the right questions, building for adaptability and designing AI around people - not just processes. This is where intention meets impact.

The missing link between AI ambition and execution

Structure and guidance must be bespoke to the business executing the implementation. AI implementation may lack the necessary structure to succeed if it does not focus on a specific business need. In my experience, the gap between AI theory and real-world application is vast. It is easy to be inspired by stories of AI-powered transformation, but implementations are only truly transformative if they benefit your business.

To bridge the gap between ambition and execution, companies must start by clearly defining their ambitions. Analysing these ambitions and narrowing them down to a specific set of definitions helps focus efforts on one or two use cases that can be effectively executed.

It is important to recognise that we are operating in a dynamic space that is in constant evolution and the growth rate is significant. It is likely that the AI we see now will be vastly different and better in a year's time. Being ready for execution means having an experimental mindset which can grow and evolve as the industry will.

Here is a list of actions that companies must take to ensure AI adoption can drive real business value rather than becoming an expensive mistake.

Starting with the right questions

Businesses need to start with clear objectives, aligning AI adoption with measurable outcomes rather than generic innovation goals.

Instead of asking 'what AI tool can we use?', leaders should ask:

What problem is slowing us down?

Where are we leaking time, resource or value?

What goals are we struggling to reach?

Addressing business needs ensures solutions tackle real-life problems and everyday challenges that employees encounter such as resource optimisation, operational efficiency and/or customer experience. By targeting issues that delay or cause frustration to employees, companies ensure that their investment adds real value to daily activities performed by the business.

This approach not only focuses on resolving existing issues, but also gains trust from within the organisation. AI will likely form part of an overall digital strategy and it is therefore important to prepare the wider business to adapt to future challenges and opportunities.

For success, companies will need to rethink how AI integrates into their business strategy. AI is not a plug-and-play solution; it requires clear success criteria, a structured implementation plan, as well as a modular and iterative roadmap. It also requires a significant investment in time, personnel and budget - it is crucial therefore, that this investment is targeted and value-focused.

AI adoption isn't plug-and-play

Expecting AI to work perfectly from day one is very optimistic. Unlike traditional software, AI is probabilistic - it learns, improves and requires ongoing refinement, even in cases where it performs well without prior training. Once again, this process becomes much easier and faster when you have someone guiding you through it and troubleshooting along the way.

Electricity demand in April dropped to the lowest level since September following a winter period which saw new demand peaks recorded, provisional data from grid operator EirGrid shows.

Overall electricity system demand stood at 2,792 GWh (Gigawatt Hours) for April - one of the only months since September where demand fell below the 3,000 GWh mark, alongside February which is a shorter month.

For comparison, demand in November, another 30-day month, stood at 3,010 GWh. As forecast in EirGrid's annual Winter Outlook report, electricity demand was strong across this period, with peak demand passing the 6,000 MW (Megawatt) mark for the first time on 8 January during a particularly cold period.

Megawatt (MW) values provide snapshots of electricity demand at a particular moment in time, whereas Gigawatt Hours (GWh) reflects electricity use over a longer period.

Demand in April

Wind power met 27% of electricity demand in April, while solar power provided for 4% of electricity used across the country.

Gas was again the single biggest source of electricity generation for the month at 41.5%, and electricity imported via interconnection met 16.5% of demand. Alongside renewables, gas-powered generation and interconnection are important contributors towards meeting system demand, particularly at times of low renewable availability.

Diarmaid Gillespie, Director of System Operations at EirGrid, said: "We're seeing the demand profile for electricity change somewhat as the warmer weather and longer days reduces the need for heating and lighting, with electricity demand in April dropping back down below the 3,000 Gigawatt Hour mark following the expected winter peaks in previous months. As we come towards summer we'll continue to rely on a mix of generation sources to maintain a stable supply of power on the electricity grid."

A new report shows how the growing OurKidsCode network of creative coding workshops and clubs for families is enabling parents in communities across Ireland to be more proactive in their children's use of technology, with mothers comprising 72% of the parents involved.

The OurKidsCode project, based in the School of Computer Science and Statistics in Trinity College Dublin, has built an infrastructure and partnership network with county councils across Ireland, including for leveraging Ireland's rural grid of broadband connection point community centres, and Microsoft Dream Space, as well as with the National Parents Council.

This network of relationships is successfully enabling OurKidsCode to deliver facilitator-led workshops and a 'Start a Club' programme that supports the establishment of parent-led creative coding clubs for families with primary-level children.

The OurKidsCode programme builds parents' confidence and skills in technology alongside their children at informal, hands-on creative coding workshops. These take place outside of school hours in libraries, primary schools and rural broadband connection point community centres.

Creative coding is the playful use of computer programming to make art, stories, or interactive projects, combining coding, crafting and making. OurKidsCode workshops are appealing to parents who are looking for ways to increase their children's active creation rather than passive consumption of technology.

OurKidsCode has collaborated with Microsoft Dream Space since 2022 to support young people, families and educators in rural communities through inclusive STEM opportunities. Core to this collaboration are the opportunities given to rural clubs to come together to enter The Dream Space Showcase, a national STEM event that celebrates innovation and creativity found within rural clubs, schools and communities.

OurKidsCode has established fiscal and operational partnerships with county councils across Ireland and has worked closely with an increasing number of county council broadband officers since 2021. In 2024, OurKidsCode began to expand its work with county councils to include partnerships with county libraries.

Facilitated by county councils and through its broadband officers, OurKidsCode offers workshops and provides support to clubs at broadband connection points across the country, which are publicly accessible sites in rural and remote areas that have been provided with a high-speed broadband connection.

Funded by Research Ireland and the Department of Rural and Community Development, OurKidsCode has reached 5,240 parents and children in 111 predominantly rural locations across Ireland. The report shows females (mothers and girls) comprised 55 per cent of participants, with males (fathers and boys) making up 43 per cent, busting the gender stereotype that females are not as interested in computing as males.

OurKidsCode is committed to promoting inclusivity and diversity in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths). By partnering with DEIS schools, local development agencies and NGOs, it strives to make workshops that are accessible to all families.

Speaking at the recent launch of OurKidsCode's Impact Report, OurKidsCode project lead and assistant professor in the School of Computer Science and Statistics at TCD, Dr. Nina Bresnihan, said:

"OurKidsCode is committed to increasing opportunities for parental involvement in children's computing education and contributing to greater diversity, inclusivity and equal access, with a particular focus on rural communities where access to such initiatives is often limited.

Getting parents involved in their children's coding education can have powerful outcomes. Research in our new report shows how this boosts knowledge and confidence. It also sustains families engaging together in computing activities and promotes computing as a subject choice and future careers in STEAM-related fields.

The Taoiseach Micheál Martin today described two large-scale data centre facilities being developed by Echelon Data Centres in Co Wicklow as "the model for future data centre development in Ireland".

Speaking in Arklow at the official launch of Echelon Data Centres' DUB20 and DUB30 facilities, the Taoiseach provided strong support for the data centre sector and the economic value it delivers for Ireland.

Mr Martin said: "These two large-scale facilities demonstrate Echelon's commitment to responsible data centre development. They are located in a regional area where the grid isn't constrained, they will have the capacity to generate and dispatch power to the grid when needed, and they will facilitate the generation of renewable energy resources that will, in turn, help decarbonise Ireland's electricity system.

"They are the model for future data centre development in Ireland - and they will deliver jobs and economic benefits for Wicklow, and will encourage further foreign direct investment in Ireland.

CEO of IDA Ireland, Michael Lohan added: "Driving sustainable change sits at the very heart of IDA Ireland's Adapt Intelligently: A Strategy for Sustainable Growth and Innovation 2025-29. Indeed, our client companies are instrumental in shaping a green and digital global economy. Echelon's commitment to operating its facilities sustainably, responsibly, and with due regard for the environment is commendable. I wish the team continued success."

Echelon will invest an estimated €3.5bn to develop the DUB20 & DUB30 sites, creating around 2,600 jobs during construction and 715 permanent positions at the two facilities once they are operational. However, an Economic Impact Assessment report prepared for Echelon by KPMG has calculated that the potential economic output of the DUB20 and DUB30 sites could be as much as €7.5bn during the construction phase, and €801m per year once both campuses are operational.

The Economic Impact Assessment states that the potential economic output of the DUB20 and DUB30 sites could be as much as €7.5bn during the construction phase, and €801m per year once both campuses are operational.

The report found that every €1 Echelon invests in the DUB20 and DUB30 sites could yield a return of €1.60 due to additional economic activity through supply chains and employee spending across construction and operational phases.

It also found that for every 10 jobs created during construction, up to nine additional jobs will be supported elsewhere in the economy, while every 10 direct operational roles could sustain a further 16 jobs.

Echelon Chief Operations Officer, Graeme McWilliams said: "Echelon's sites in Wicklow will generate broad-based economic value with measurable impact across the Irish economy that goes far beyond our initial investment. They represent responsible data centre development which supports regional development and job creation in partnership with good grid citizenship.

"The energy demands of DUB20 and DUB30 will underpin investment in almost 1GW of wind-generated renewable energy, power that will help reinforce the national grid, increase Ireland's energy security, and support our transition from fossil fuels to clean, green energy sources."

Echelon's DUB20 campus is being developed on the site of the former Irish Fertilisers Industries plant at the Avoca River Business Park in Arklow. DUB30 is being developed some 5km away at Kish Business Park.

Last year, DUB20 became the first large-scale data centre in Ireland to receive a grid connection from EirGrid for more than four years. This reflects the fact that the site meets Commission for the Regulation of Utilities' (CRU) 2021 criteria for data centre connections.
