Midland Tyre Services has established a new standard of safety across its entire fleet operations by implementing advanced AI-powered solutions from Samsara Inc. ("Samsara") (NYSE: IOT), the pioneer of the Connected OperationsPlatform. Through integrated telematics, GPS tracking, and dual-facing AI Dash Cams, Midland Tyre Services has gained greater visibility into individual driver performance and reduced accidents by 54% over the last two years.

Midland Tyre Services supplies some of Ireland's largest blue-chip companies with new tyres and attends over 8,000+ breakdowns every year. After experiencing a high accident rate and, as a result, high insurance premiums, the company turned to Samsara for a new approach to safety and driver behaviour for its large fleet of vehicles that operate 24/7 365 days a year.

Using Samsara's Connected Operations platform, Midland Tyre Services now has a birds-eye view over its entire fleet. Enhanced driver tracking and fleet management has had a significant impact on overall efficiency, reducing total time spent managing the fleet by 50%. It has also saved an average of 20 minutes on each breakdown call-out, totalling 2,333 hours - or 97 days - across the year.

In addition, Midland Tyre Service has built targeted safety coaching programmes for drivers, resulting in an average driver score - a metric that tracks, measures, and reports on individual driver performance - of 96%, pushing drivers into the 'elite' safety bracket of 90 or higher.

The platform allows managers to gain insights into risky driver behaviours, and also assess situations where the driver is not at fault - allowing them to exonerate drivers which wasn't previously possible. As a result, accidents have reduced by 54% in two years, the company has renegotiated insurance premiums to reduce overall costs and the team has created a culture of safety across the business.

Planetary health and women's well-being will be top of the agenda when entrepreneurs and investors gather to innovate, speculate and accumulate at DeeptechFest Ireland, which returns to Republic of Work at the end of this month. The co-working space, which was recently listed in the top 50 of Europe's best startup hubs by The Financial Times, will host the event for the third time and showcase the latest in groundbreaking research and breakthrough technologies, examining their potential to profoundly reshape industries, economies and societies.

DeeptechFest 2025 kicks off on March 26th with a pre-event workshop, networking and startup pitches, followed by a full-day conference on March 27th. The event will feature two keynote speakers and three key panels exploring how deeptech can shape a healthier planet and improve human well-being.

The event also aims to uncover and develop opportunities for deeptech investment in Ireland and across Europe, and a number of sessions will take place to outline the funding opportunities available, with presentations from Health Innovation Hub Ireland and EU funding experts FundtoInnovate.

2024 was a positive year for the Irish FinTech market, with funding reaching $237.95 million across 25 deals; this was a significant increase (291%) compared to last year were $60.83 million was raised across 11 deals, according to the Pulse of FinTech H2'24 - a bi-annual report published by KPMG highlighting global FinTech investment trends.

The data includes the $109 million buyout of Dublin-based software company SoftCo by Keensight Capital, making it the largest FinTech deal in Ireland in 2024. Other notable deals for the period were ones by mobile payment platform CleverCards and CreditLogic, a Dublin-based fintech both raising just over $8.6 million and $3.7 million respectively.

But FinTech levels in Ireland was an outlier. Global investment dropped from $119.8 billion across 5,382 deals in 2023 to a seven-year low of $95.6 billion across 4,639 deals in 2024. A perfect storm of factors combined to soften investor appetite, including macroeconomic challenges, geopolitical conflicts and tensions, a year of elections in major jurisdictions, and concerns about valuations and the lack of exits.

FinTech investment in EMEA region sinks to $20.3 billion - lowest total since 2016

FinTech investment in the EMEA region fell from $27.6 billion across 1,833 deals in 2023 to just $20.3 billion across 1,465 deals in 2024. H2'24 also saw a significant drop compared to H1'24 - from $13 billion across 820 deals to just $7.3 billion across 645 deals.

Irish FinTech ecosystem shows resilience

Commenting on FinTech activity in Ireland during 2024, Ian Nelson, Head of Financial Services & Regulatory at KPMG in Ireland, said: "The Irish FinTech sector's remarkable growth in 2024, with a staggering 291% increase in investment to $237.95 million, underscores its resilience and potential. Despite global investment falling to a seven-year low, Ireland's innovative spirit and robust ecosystem have set it apart as a beacon of progress in a challenging economic landscape."

Nelson adds, "Early-stage deals are thriving, driven by interest in AI and innovative business models. This growth is even more impressive given the macroeconomic challenges, geopolitical conflicts, and election uncertainties that have dampened investor appetite globally and a testament to the strength and adaptability of our FinTech ecosystem."

Focussing on H2'24, Ireland's FinTech sector recorded $97.15 million in M&A, venture capital and private equity transactions across five deals. This reflects a significant increase from the $1.61 million for the same period last year.

Global Highlights 2024

Global FinTech investment fell from $119.8 billion across 5,382 deals in 2023 to $95.6 billion across 4,639 deals in 2024.

The Americas attracted $63.8 billion in FinTech investment across 2,267 deals in 2024, of which the US accounted for $50.7 billion across 1,836 deals; the EMEA region attracted $20.3 billion across 1,4645 deals, while the ASPAC region attracted $11.2 billion across 896 deals.

Global M&A deal value fell from $60.2 billion to $49.6 billion between 2023 and 2024; while H2'24 was softer than H1'24, M&A deal value rose from $7.4 billion to $14.2 billion between Q3'24 and Q4'24.

PE investment declined significantly, falling from $10.5 billion in 2023 to just $2.6 billion in 2024, while VC investment saw a modest drop from $49.2 billion in 2023 to $43.4 billion in 2024.

Payments was the strongest area of FinTech investment globally in 2024, with $31 billion in investment compared to just $17.2 billion in 2023; other sectors that saw investment rise year-over-year included digital assets and currencies - from $8.7 billion to $9.1 billion, regtech - from $4.4 billion to $7.4 billion, proptech - from $1.9 billion to $3 billion, and wealthtech - from $190 million to $400 million.

Sligo based engineering firm Jennings O'Donovan are one of the first organisations in Ireland to use new digital technology to reward staff with a local gift card.

Jennings O'Donovan used the technology available through their local Town & City Gift Card to reward their 90+ staff with an e-card as a Christmas reward. The new tech allowed the firm to send the digital Love Sligo Gift Cards to staff on a chosen day and time, ensuring all staff members received their reward at the same time.

Focused on renewable energy, water supply and wastewater treatment across Ireland, Jennings O'Donovan said the new way of rewarding their team digitally had a number of benefits over physical gift cards, while the local element allowed their employee reward investment to benefit the local economy.

David Kiely is director at Jennings O'Donovan and commented: "As a Sligo based organisation, we feel the need to give back to the community, support local businesses and support placemaking efforts in the town too. A strong town attracts new industry and encourages new businesses, which is a real positive for Sligo. Choosing our local Town & City Gift Card, the Love Sligo Gift Card, meant the €30,000 we invested in our team rewards went directly into the local economy, and stayed in the local economy.

"Another reason for moving to the Love Sligo Gift Card was the zero commission that businesses have to pay to accept the card, so if a team member spends €50 with a local shop, the shop keeps the full €50. Lots of retailers, restaurants and other businesses accept the Love Sligo Gift Card, so there was plenty of choice for our team.

"Our employees were told in advance that they'd be receiving their digital Love Sligo Gift Card reward by email. The ease of use for us in administering the digital card over a physical card was brilliant. We have a hybrid working system which means that not all employees are in the office at the same time. In the past, this has meant we couldn't get the cards to the staff member in person, so they had to then be posted out. With the digital Love Sligo Gift Card, everyone received their reward at the same time.

"The Love Sligo Gift Card has been well received by staff, particularly the ease and choice. Some staff members used their card to put fuel in their cars, others used their card at the supermarket or the DIY store. People may not always want to spend their reward on discretionary items, and the Love Sligo Gift Card offers our team the chance to spend as they choose.

The Town & City Gift Card initiative is active across Ireland in Ballinrobe, Carndonagh, Cavan, Donegal Town, Drogheda, Kilkenny, Letterkenny, Limerick, Sligo, Tipperary, Waterford and County Wexford. The cards can be spent with a variety of local businesses, making them popular for employee rewards. €10.5 million of Town & City Gift Cards were purchased in Ireland in 2024, up from €7 million in 2023. Local gift card sales in Ireland are expected to exceed €15 million in 2025.

In Sligo, over €1.5 million Love Sligo Gift Cards were purchased between November 2023 and November 2024, with around 70% of sales dedicated to local organisations purchasing the gift card for employee rewards. Over €1.1million of the overall sales figure has now been redeemed across 240 Sligo businesses by way of 29,000 plus in store transactions.

The Love Sligo Gift Card was introduced by Sligo BID in association with County Sligo LEADER Partnership to drive spend in Sligo. Cards can be spent with around 240 participating businesses, driving footfall in the town.

AI adoption in Ireland has surged to 91%, nearly doubling from 49% in 2024, a significant leap that now puts Ireland ahead of many of its EU counterparts after previously trailing behind.

Drawing on insights from 300 senior leaders across the island of Ireland, the AI Economy in Ireland 2025 report produced by Trinity College Dublin in collaboration with Microsoft Ireland, provides a comprehensive view of the current rate of AI adoption. The report reveals AI's potential to contribute at least €250 billion to Ireland's GDP by 2035 . However, this could increase by a further €60bn depending on how businesses, government, and industry leaders harness AI's capabilities and implement policies that foster responsible innovation.

The report provides an index comparing adoption rates from our 2024 findings, highlighting the acceleration of AI integration, along with insights into the evolving opportunities and challenges for AI advancement in Ireland.

The report highlights AI's projected economic contribution to Ireland:

AI adoption is projected to add at least €250 billion to Ireland's economy (GDP) by 2035.

Supportive AI policies and an enabling business environment could add an additional €60 billion by 2035.

AI adoption is expected to increase Ireland's Gross National Income (GNI) by at least €130 billion by 2035.

With the right policies and widespread AI adoption, GNI could be up to €86 billion higher than in a baseline scenario.

On a per capita basis, Ireland's GNI could rise to €160,000 per person with optimal AI adoption and policies - €30,000 higher than a non-AI baseline scenario.

"Increasingly recognised as a general-purpose technology, similar to electricity and the internet, AI is becoming a fundamental driver of economic growth, and this new report highlights its transformational impact on Ireland," said Catherine Doyle, General Manager, Microsoft Ireland.

"Ireland is uniquely positioned to capitalise on AI's capabilities, thanks to its thriving tech ecosystem, skilled workforce, and forward-thinking government initiatives. With a collaborative approach across government, academia, and industry, Ireland can play a leading role in the era of AI, driving sustainable economic growth across sectors and setting the stage for global competitiveness as AI adoption continues to surge."

AI Adoption & Governance Challenges

While the potential for AI to drive economic growth is clear, organisations still face significant challenges in adopting AI effectively. Despite growing recognition of AI's value, with 50% of organisations (18% increase on 2024) believing AI will enhance productivity, only 8% of organisations have adopted an AI-first approach - integrating AI across all divisions.

A key issue appears to be the lack of formal strategy and governance frameworks, creating gaps in secure and responsible AI implementation. In line with the vision of a thriving, competitive AI ecosystem, about half of organisations do not yet have clear AI policies, hindering their ability to manage AI usage effectively.

This challenge is compounded by the persistence of a "Shadow AI Culture," where employees independently adopt AI tools without the organisation's oversight. Key findings that underscore this challenge include:

80% of organisations report employees using free AI tools without built-in enterprise security controls (45% in 2024), while enterprise-grade AI tool usage doubled (18% in 2024 to 42% in 2025).

61% of managers acknowledge AI usage even in workplaces where it is officially restricted (30% in 2024).

AI Adoption Across the Island of Ireland

The report also reveals significant differences in AI adoption across the island of Ireland, particularly in the public sector. These differences highlight both the challenges and opportunities that each region faces as they work toward more integrated AI systems.

IT.ie, a leading Irish IT managed services company, has announced the results of new research, conducted in partnership with SonicWall, which reveals a lack of confidence among office workers in their ability to thwart cyberthreats. The survey found that 51% of office workers feel more vulnerable to cyberattacks than they did a year ago, leading to 43% believing that they are at risk of causing a cybersecurity incident in the next 12 months.

The research of 1,000 office workers based in Ireland was carried out by Censuswide on behalf of IT.ie and SonicWall, a global leader in cybersecurity innovation. It uncovers a need for more cybersecurity training for office workers, along with a greater sense of shared responsibility for upholding cybersecurity standards.

The survey found that of the 43% who feel at risk of causing a breach, 60% attribute it to incomplete or non-existent cybersecurity training, and nearly a third (31%) blame poor communication from management regarding cyber risks.

These feelings of being ill-prepared are reflected among the general office worker population, too, with 21% saying they do not feel adequately trained to deal with increased cybersecurity threats on a day-to-day basis. This is despite the fact that the EU's incoming cybersecurity legislation, the NIS2 Directive, outlines cybersecurity training as one of the minimum measures required for compliance.

Generally, the recommended frequency for cybersecurity training is once per month - as long as it is aligned with a multilayered approach that includes defensive solutions such as firewalls and VPNs. However, IT.ie's research found that just 15% of office workers receive training this often and some 20%, admitted they have not received cybersecurity training in more than a year - or never. The research showed that 42% have the opportunity to brush up on their skills every two to six months, while 23% receive training every seven months to a year.

This issue of substandard training may explain why 26% of office workers do not believe cybersecurity is their personal responsibility. Meanwhile, over one-in-ten (12%) office workers do not believe that their employer takes cybersecurity seriously.

Eamon Gallagher, founder and managing director, IT.ie, said: "Our research clearly shows that employees have a growing sense of unease with regards to cybersecurity. In truth, they are right to fear causing a breach; the majority of cybersecurity incidents are caused by human error, so employees need to know that they are equipped with relevant, up-to-date know-how on reducing that risk.

"At IT.ie, we work with organisations to ensure employees are not only regularly trained, but that the systems they are using are as watertight as technology will allow. Without this collective effort and a multi-layered security approach, organisations will inevitably face a greater risk of breaches or compromise. Now is the time to listen to employees: if they are worried about cybersecurity, then the business should be worried, too."

Stuart Taylor, Regional Director for Northern Europe, Sonicwall, said: "Last year, SonicWall detected 210,258 never-before-seen malware variants. Evidently, cybercriminals are evolving fast and it's not enough to simply be aware; it's about building a resilient, multilayered defence that combines employee training with robust security solutions. SonicWall research has shown that in doing so, organisations can avoid 68 days of potential downtime.

"Almost one-third of cyber events are now caused by business email compromise and our research with IT.ie highlights that while office workers recognise the growing risks, many still lack the confidence and tools to defend against them. A proactive approach, integrating firewalls, VPNs, endpoint security, and continuous education, is essential to protect businesses from increasingly sophisticated cyberthreats."

We see this with the success of #LearnOnTikTok which is igniting new interests in everything from local geology to ancient history. And since launching a feed dedicated to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), millions of teens use it every week. Today, we're expanding our family features to provide parents with more options for tailoring their teens' account. We're also introducing a feature to help teens build balanced digital habits.

Simple supervision tools for families

Since launching Family Pairing - TikTok's parenting controls - five years ago, we've continually added new features based on feedback from families, as well as guidance from leading experts. Today, we're enhancing Family Pairing by launching a way for parents to block their teens from being on TikTok during times that they control. No teen or family is the same, and whether it's during family time, school, at night, or a weekend away, caregivers can use our new Time Away feature to decide when it's best for their teens to take a break. Parents can also set a reoccurring schedule to best suit their family life. If plans change, teens can request extra time, but parents make the final decision.

We're also adding a Family Pairing feature that can allow parents to see who their teen is following on TikTok, and who follows them, along with accounts their teen has blocked. With increased visibility into their teen's network, parents will be better equipped to have ongoing conversations and help their teens develop the digital literacy skills they need.

We also hear that parents want to know more about the content their teens engage with on our app. In response, in the coming months, when a teen reports a video they think may be against TikTok's rules, they can choose to alert a parent, caregiver, or other trusted adult at the same time, even if they aren't using Family Pairing.

With these latest updates, parents can now view or adjust more than 15 safety, well-being, and privacy features. This includes:

Re-enabling our feed dedicated to STEM, if their teen has turned it off. This is now available in more than 100 countries and is enjoyed by millions of teens every week.

Setting customisable daily screen time limits. For example, parents could choose to limit their teens to 30 minutes on TikTok during the week but a little longer on a weekend. Once a parent-set limit has been reached, a teen can only use TikTok if their parent shares a unique passcode. Even if a parent doesn't customize their teen's settings, everyone under 18 has a 60 minute daily screen time limit by default.

Switching their teen's account back to the default private setting, if their teen has made it public.

Helping teens learn balanced digital habits

We're also announcing a new way to encourage young people to switch off at night. If a teen under 16 is on TikTok after 10pm, their For You feed will be interrupted with our new wind down feature. At launch, this is a full-screen takeover with calming music to help teens relax and be mindful of the time. If a teen decides to spend additional time on TikTok after the first reminder, we show a second, harder to dismiss, full-screen prompt. As before, we deliberately do not send push notifications to teens at night, which cannot be changed.

We designed these features to reflect best practices in behavioural change theory by providing positive nudges that can help teens develop balanced long-term habits. How do you keep AI safe and how important is AI safety should have been the most important questions of any AI safety institute. The questions are not how to keep the AI model of a company safe by evaluating it before release, or that AI should simply be safe because of awareness or being trendy.

If any AI safety institute that meant business paid attention to the news - of misuses of AI for fake images affecting schools, fake AI voices used for impersonation against loved ones, fake videos used against businesses, wrong information from AI used for nefarious purposes, malware generation and so forth - it should have been clear that the approach to making AI safe has to be general, with tens of different methods at any time, in direct and indirect forms.

How do you keep AI safe?

AI safety should have led AI regulation, such that tools for safety may not need to be enforced for people to use them in a jurisdiction, but that people would adopt those tools because of their necessity. Simply, AI regulation that would work would be AI safety tools, as products, against unsafe and unaligned AI models or outputs. Though tough, there was not even an explored path [known] towards this outcome, making regulations go forward, then it became unpopular because of the vacuum left by innovation.

What AI safety institutes should have centered on, also, is that any unsafe AI from any source, is a risk wherever it is accessible. This means that it is important to work on AI model safety, output AI safety, platform AI safety, and jurisdiction AI safety. Model safety would apply to models. Output safety would be against misused AI outputs. Platform safety would be on platforms where AI outputs may appear, or where AI models can be found like social media, search engines, ISPs, company network, and so forth. Jurisdiction AI safety could be a county, a state, a nation, in ways that may not easily be bypassed.

The vision for safety and the approach could have been a driver to pursue technical answers, with the likelihood of minor to major success that would have been solid enough to withstand political pressures or a hard pivot.

The UK and the US AI safety institutes did not seem to have those, and they both seem to be on the verge of inconsequentiality. Already, the UK AI safety institute has been renamed to the UK AI security institute, changing its mandate since the prior mandate had little direction or anything of magnitude to show. A report on TIME, Inside the U.K.'s Bold Experiment in AI Safety, detailed a humiliating experience for the UK AI safety institute, where AI labs would not allow them access to the weights of the models in evaluation, meanwhile, DeepSeek, a model of a possible adversary, opened their weights to everyone. The UK AISI said it was a mistake to ask for the weights, maybe, but the lack of direction in assuming that evaluating a few models meant AI safety was a total waste, showing of a lack of scope on what their mission was about.

The US AI safety institute was an absolute nod off effort given the opportunity to make a major difference. There was the AI safety consortium that nothing ever came out of. Lots of organizations joined. They did not show or explain on the list page what their ongoing projects in AI safety or alignment were, and those that were working on AI safety would have done so, regardless of being a part of the consortium.

The US AISI had an agreement to evaluate the models of OpenAI and Anthropic, two companies that for all the misuses of AI, in the last two years, did not provide general or industry-wide answers, just like the rest. This means that even if those models were fairly safe, what would it matter if some families were put through a bad experience in deception of fake AI audio of a loved one or the several other scalable possibilities of misuses?
