38 Ukrainian startups will receive financial support of €1.250,000. This funding will support innovation and growth through four key programmes: Innovative Entrepreneurship, Deep Tech Incubators, Rebuild Ukraine, and Deep Tech Scale-up and Acceleration.

The 7th OECD World Forum on Well-being will take place in Rome on 4-6 November 2024 and is co-organised by the OECD's Centre on Well-Being, Inclusion, Sustainability and Equal Opportunity (WISE) and the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), with the collaboration of the Italian National Statistical Institute (ISTAT), and the support of the Bank of Italy, under the Italian Presidency of the G7.

The Forum will look at how the well-being perspective can enhance our understanding of major societal challenges, such as climate change and artificial intelligence, and respond to them. Working with over 100 countries, the OECD is a global policy forum that promotes policies to preserve individual liberty and improve the economic and social well-being of people around the world.

During the Forum, on 5 November, OECD WISE will be launching its flagship report How's Life? 2024 - Well-being and Resilience in Times of Crisis. This sixth edition of How's Life? presents the latest evidence from over 80 indicators covering current well-being outcomes, inequalities, and resources for future well-being.

It contrasts medium-term trends in well-being outcomes with developments since 2019 to understand how well OECD governments are navigating the interconnected challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis and to outline emerging risks that require policy attention.

Also on 5 November, OECD WISE will launch the OECD Digital Well-being Hub, developed in collaboration with Cisco. The Hub offers a holistic view of the impacts of digital transformation across key dimensions of well-being through a dashboard of indicators.

It will also collect real-time, detailed evidence on people's digital behaviours and experiences through its crowd-sourcing tool, to help better understand inequalities and opportunities presented by digital life and provide a fuller picture of how the digital transformation is impacting our lives and our well-being.

Beta Festival, Ireland's art and technology festival was on Friday, 1st November, featuring a robot that rolls its eyes at live social media algorithms, the opportunity to reduce emissions by distracting fossil fuel companies, and digital tools that investigate real-life conspiracies, Beta runs until Sunday, November 17th at The Digital Hub and wider Dublin 8 area.

Co-founded and supported by The Digital Hub, Beta has announced a full line-up of artists, exhibitions, installations, and workshops that will focus on the key theme of the relationship between technology and power, with specific focus areas including artificial intelligence and facial recognition technology.

In addition, a first-of-its-kind Assembly on AI and Art will bring together leading experts in technology and culture to discuss critical areas in the arts industry that are impacted by AI and should be considered for future policy developments. AI Ambassador for Ireland Patricia Scanlon will be among the facilitators leading discussions.

Cannes Film Festival winner Noire, the Unknown Life of Claudette Colvin will make its Irish debut at this year's Beta Festival at the Samuel Beckett Theatre from Thursday, November 7th to Sunday, November 10th. Noire tells the real-life story of 15-year-old Claudette Colvin, who refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in a segregated 1950s Alabama. The production uses virtual reality to provide viewers with an immersive digital experience.

Tickets for Noire are limited and range from €15 - €22.

Beta will also host an international exhibition Unsettling the Algorithm: Seeds of Resistance, which will explore how digital systems and algorithms shape, influence, and govern our daily lives. Curated by Aisling Murray and Nora O' Murchú, the exhibition will feature artists including Basil Al-Rawi, Tega Brain and Sam Levigne, Firas Shehadeh, Winnie Soon, and Tzu-Tung Lee among others.

Separately, the Local Artists Network will spotlight emerging Irish artists with new work from Conan McIvor and new commissions from Aisling Phelan and Cailean Finn. Both exhibitions are free of charge and will run from Friday, November 1st to Sunday, November 17th. Additional workshops covering digital democracy, facial recognition technology, and artist networking events are taking place over the two weeks and will be free of charge to attendees.

Events and exhibitions will take place predominantly in buildings across The Digital Hub campus, including iD8 Studio, The Bank, and wider Dublin areas including Pallas Projects Studios, Fire Station Artists Studio, and the Samuel Beckett Theatre.

Beta will officially launch on Friday, November 1st with events including the Assembly on AI and Art, keynote from Abeba Birhane as well as free workshops and panel discussions. The conference over the opening weekend will cover topics from digital activism to immersive storytelling, algorithmic resistance, and future archives. Tickets for the conferences are available to purchase from the Beta website from €15 - €25.

Key highlights from the weekend will include:

Samuel Beckett Theatre will host performances from Noire, an immersive virtual reality performance that tells the story of Claudette Colvin who refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in the 1950s segregated Alabama. Directed by Stéphane Foenkinos and Pierre-Alain Giraud.

The Ethics Studio is a space for members of the public to engage with real ethical concerns and potential real-world impacts of new and emerging technologies developed with the festival research partner ADAPT Research Centre. This will include The Bigger Picture - an exhibition of new commissions that challenge outdated tropes and offer a more grounded, realistic portrayal of AI.

I reviewed "ChatGPT and the Future of AI: The Deep Language Revolution" by Terrence J. Sejnowski. This book is an extensive exploration of large language models, also known as LLMs. They are the basis for generative AI applications like ChatGPT. The author contends they will make us humans smarter as we leave repetitive language based tasks to AI.

The author's writing style is concise and authoritative, with a sprinkle of humor in places. Comparing LLMs to Peter Man, as they have not grown up and live in a digital never-never land, is as witty as it is accurate. This book is very readable, yet in parts can get technical. The author handles this with high-level comparisons to our general past to illustrate a point.

Overall, it's an informative read on the current state of LLMs, their potential for AI, and AI's future, co-existing with humans.

ChatGPT and the Future of AI reviewed

The author comes across as a passionate ambassador of AI, but does not address genuine security concerns regarding the technology. Accuracy of prompt content returns, cybercrime, and AI abuse cases are just some highlights that materially affect AI's future.

The informative read starts at the preface, with some interesting facts about AI's current state and current use cases. It also explores the author's motive for writing the book, and why we are looking for AI's intelligence in the wrong place. The author uses chapter section titles effectively. This sectioned title feature increases the ease of reading throughout the book's subsequent chapters.

Moving into an introduction, where the author sets out reader expectations for the book. Split into three parts, Part 1, Living With Large Language Models (LLMs), is over chapters 1 to 5. This part looks at the current state of Large Language Models today.

Part 2, Transformers, is from chapters 6 to 10. It covers the backend of AI from deep learning models, and the evolution of a computational infrastructure to enable transformers in a distributed architecture. This part can get technology and maths heavy for some, but the author addresses it with illustrative real world comparisons.

The last part 2 chapter on Regulation is brief, but makes some points regarding the Digital Services Act in the EU and testimony in the US regarding setting up an agency like the FDA to manage AI's development path. This chapter alludes to relevant points on regulation and interestingly gets AI to fill in some detail around it. ChatGPT features regularly to support chapter points throughout the book, demonstrating its usability.

Part 3, Back to the Future, is from chapters 11 to 14, ending with some predications for AI's future. No keyboards are but one predication made. Instead, voice controlled interactions will make life easier for users of large distribution information systems like the internet.

In looking forward, this makes sense for integrating many AI modules into a language bound Artificial General Intelligence. However, trust in ethical use and abuse control, both present and future, is an issue. It is something that requires a nation to develop with the technology sector, rather than the technology sector to develop and sell to a nation.

The author finishes with a comparison of humanity's evolution and how we co-exist with nature without ever fully understanding it. He equates this to AI's progress and the argument for peaceful co-existence with humans. We don't need to fully understand AI to push ahead with it.

It's my view that while the majority do not, AI creators need to fully understand their creations. We did not create humanity, nature did, thus nullifying this comparison. While AI has shown us it has a proper place in our world, its future needs to be carefully thought-out.

We cannot afford to create another monster of our own making, but can wholly benefit from an AI ecosystem with the best interests of humanity in mind. In that, AI's future, as the book suggests, can travel many paths, as long as we use...

Taoiseach Simon Harris joined James O'Connor, Microsoft Ireland Site Leader and Corporate Vice-President of Microsoft Global Operations Service Centre, and IDA Ireland Chief Executive Michael Lohan today to announce that Ireland has been selected as a key location for Microsoft to invest in advancing its global AI innovation. The decision will result in Microsoft adding 550 new Irish-based engineering and R&D roles to pioneer the development of new AI technologies.

The investment will see Microsoft, a global leader in the development and use of AI, undertake significant industrial research into AI to develop critical, leading-edge technology in the area of AI and cyber security, which will then be made available to public and private sector organisations all around the world.

Multidisciplinary teams in the areas of Azure Networking & Infrastructure, Business & Industry Copilot, Customer Success Engineering and Cyber Security will be recruited to investigate groundbreaking technologies and the development AI infrastructure that is scalable, responsible, trusted and secure. The new roles will ensure that Microsoft Ireland's Engineering Hub will have end-to-end AI product development capabilities.

Furthermore, teams will seek to drive new applications for AI across multiple industries and create brand new AI-enabled product offerings and internal solutions for Microsoft, supporting the corporation's strategic objective to be at the forefront of responsible AI development and cyber security.

This investment will result in an additional 550 new highly skilled jobs at Microsoft Ireland over the next three to four years, across areas such as software engineering, applied sciences, product management, program management, data science, design, technical writing and analytics. 120 of these roles are available to apply for from today in software engineering, applied sciences, security research, product management and program management.

Microsoft first invested in Ireland in 1985 and with the addition of the roles announced today the company will employ more than 6,000 people across a multifunctional campus in Leopardstown, its data centre campus in Grange Castle, and LinkedIn.

This investment is supported by the Government of Ireland through IDA Ireland.

Salesforce's latest State of the AI Connected Customer research reveals consumer trust in companies is at a record low and that AI is raising the stakes for brands. Today, 69% of consumers believe that advances in AI make trust even more important, and with AI agents on the rise, the findings point to real opportunities for companies to win back consumers with trustworthy AI agents this Christmas.

This opportunity is greatest with Gen Zers, with 51% of Gen Z consumers saying they'd be comfortable having an agent shop for them.

Why it matters: Faced with a challenging Christmas shopping season and sinking consumer trust, brands can't afford to get AI wrong - especially as more than $200 billion in global online sales will be influenced by AI this Christmas. AI agents, or intelligent software that understands and responds to customer inquiries without human intervention, can help companies drive higher margins and keep consumers buying by delivering incredible customer service.

From alleviating clunky purchase experiences to difficult return processes, there's an agent for that. But to build trusted customer relationships, brands need trusted AI agents that are grounded in transparency and the right data.

Consumers trust less, expect more

Consumer trust is at its lowest point in eight years, and advances in AI make earning that trust more critical than ever.

Nearly three-quarters (74%) of consumers trust companies less than they did a year ago

61% feel companies are reckless with customer data

It's not just about trust; consumers also expect best-in-class experiences.

76% of consumers expect consistent interactions across departments

65% of consumers prefer using fewer touchpoints to get information or complete a task

While better deals are a top driver for consumers to switch to a new brand, customer service experience, convenience, and consistent product or service quality drive more long-term brand loyalty.

48% of consumers say poor customer service experience will stop them from making a repeat purchase from a company or brand

40% of consumers say that inconvenience, such as a difficult return process or clunky purchase experience, will cause brands to lose them

In Ireland, younger consumers are most open to AI agents

The research shows Gen Zers and millennials are more willing than older generations to use AI agents to improve their customer experience by creating more personalised, or useful content.

Younger generations, in particular, hold companies to a higher standard when it comes to adapting to and anticipating their needs - 61% of Gen Zers and millennials say AI raises the bar for customer experiences compared to just 32% of baby boomers.

Gen Z and millennial consumers are more likely than older generations to consider the benefits provided by agents.

Transparency is key to building consumer confidence in the AI agent era

Despite the promise of young shoppers, many consumers haven't made up their minds on AI yet. 43% of consumers are neutral about AI's impact on their lives, whether personal or professional.

In fact, many consumers feel a mix of suspicion (41%) and curiosity (43%) about the future of AI - revealing a ripe opportunity for companies to help consumers see and understand the benefits of AI agents.

A third of consumers - even more among Gen Z (50%) and millennials (39%) - would work with an AI agent instead of a person for faster service

The Advertising Standards Authority, the independent advertising self-regulatory body responsible for promoting, regulating and enforcing the highest standards of marketing communications in Ireland, is hosting a free webinar on Influencer Marketing that will discuss guidelines for commercial content on social media, how to correctly label ads on social media, and the importance of trust and transparency in influencer marketing.

The webinar, taking place on Thursday, 7th November, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, will be of interest to brands, seasoned influencers, and emerging content creators alike. It will offer expert insight into advertising guidelines for influencers, helping participants gain a clear understanding of what #ad means, how to label commercial content correctly, and the responsibilities involved in promoting products or services on social media.

The panel will consist of:

Garron Noone, Musician, Comedian and Content Creator, will talk about his experience as a content creator in Ireland

Scott Guthrie, Director General of Influencer Marketing Trade Body, will moderate the discussion

Orla Twomey, Chief Executive of the Advertising Standards Authority, will discuss the organisation's ongoing work in the influencer marketing, as well as the new Guidance on Influencer Advertising and Marketing for influencers that was launched last year in collaboration with the CCPC and Advertising Standards Authority

Mark Walsh, Head of Marketing Insights Unit at CCPC, will provide an overview on consumer protection laws and misleading information

A Q&A discussion will also take place

This webinar follows the release of new influencer Guidance introduced last year by the Advertising Standards Authority and CCPC. Designed to clarify compliance requirements for influencers, brands and advertising partners, the Guidance outlines key standards for transparency, accuracy and responsible messaging in social media marketing.

The Advertising Standards Authority also won the Collaboration Award at the European Advertising Standards Alliance (EASA) Best Practice Awards 2024 for the Guidance.
