The European Recycling Platform (ERP), Ireland's only pan-European compliance scheme for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Waste Batteries today announced research results by Coyne Research which revealed that 1 in 3 adults have between 5 to 10 unused electrical cables in their homes. Charging cables are the most common type of unused cables (77%), followed by USB (66%) and HDMI Cables (49%). Almost half of those surveyed keep these unused cables in a drawer in the home.

The research, commissioned by ERP, revealed that over half of all adults surveyed were aware of legislation announced by the European Council, Commission, and Parliament, which requires all new smartphones, tablets, cameras, and other electronic gadgets marketed in the EU to have a USB-C charging port by the end of 2024. As this change comes into effect, households will likely have plenty of waste cables snaking around their homes to be recycled.

This St. Patrick's Day, ERP is encouraging people to go green and banish unused cables from their homes - not by putting them in their domestic waste bins, but by recycling them at their nearest electrical retailer or recycling centre.

ERP Ireland was recently announced as a Sustainability Partner for this year's St. Patrick's Festival. As part of their partnership, ERP worked with artist Ned Leddy to create a WEEE inspired installation entitled 'Trash Mammoth' to raise awareness among festival goers about the importance of recycling electrical waste. Made from over 100 small electrical items and standing at 13 feet tall, the installation will be on display at St.

Patrick's Festival Quarter at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks on 16th - 17th March.

Festival Quarter kicks off the Bank Holiday weekend at 12pm on Saturday 16th with a jam-packed family friendly programme of events including craic, ceol, dancing, games, conversation, workshops, food, and all kinds of entertainment for absolutely everybody, before Mother's Cultúr Club takes over the site on the evening of March 16th for a massive St. Patrick's Eve party.

On March 17th, Festival Quarter will be a huge celebration of Irish culture throughout the day and night and is again completely FREE.

Tata Consultancy Services and Nest, the UK's largest workplace pension scheme, are expanding their long-standing partnership with a new customer service and care support operation. A team of new and experienced executives will provide support services to Nest's UK pension members and employers.

TCS has onboarded and trained the team at TCS' Global Delivery Centre (GDC) in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal. The team will handle inquiries and requests from Nest members to ensure the successful delivery of the UK pension auto-enrolment scheme. TCS and Nest began to expand support services operations in December 2023. The team is now growing to meet the demand of the expanded partnership with further roles being added in Letterkenny.

Scientists believe that planetary systems like our solar system contain more rocky objects than gas-rich ones. Around our sun, these include the inner planets - Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars - the asteroid belt and the Kuiper belt objects such as Pluto.

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, on the other hand, contain mostly gas. But scientists also have known for a long time that planet-forming disks start out with 100 times more mass in gas than solids, which leads to a pressing question: When and how does most of the gas leave a nascent planetary system?

JWST helps explain more about planet formation

A new study led by Naman Bajaj at the University of Arizona Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, published in the Astronomical Journal, provides answers. Using the James Webb Space Telescope, or JWST, the team obtained images from such a nascent planetary system - also known as a circumstellar disk - in the process of actively dispersing its gas into surrounding space.

"Knowing when the gas disperses is important as it gives us a better idea of how much time gaseous planets have to consume the gas from their surroundings," said Bajaj, a second-year doctoral student at UArizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. "With unprecedented glimpses into these disks surrounding young stars, the birthplaces of planets, JWST helps us uncover how planets form."

During the very early stages of planetary system formation, planets coalesce in a spinning disk of gas and tiny dust around the young star, according to Bajaj. These particles clump together, building up into bigger and bigger chunks called planetesimals. Over time, these planetesimals collide and stick together, eventually forming planets. The type, size and location of planets that form depend on the amount of material available and how long it remains in the disk.

"So, in short, the outcome of planet formation depends on the evolution and dispersal of the disk," Bajaj said.

At the heart of this discovery is the observation of T Cha, a young star - relative to the sun, which is about 4.6 billion years old - enveloped by an eroding circumstellar disk notable for a vast dust gap, spanning approximately 30 astronomical units, or au, with one au being the average distance between the Earth and the sun.

Bajaj and his team were able, for the first time, to image the disk wind, as the gas is referred to when it slowly leaves the planet-forming disk. The astronomers took advantage of the telescope's sensitivity to light emitted by an atom when high-energy radiation - for example, in starlight - strips one or more electrons from its nucleus.

This is known as ionization, and the light emitted in the process can be used as a sort of chemical "fingerprint" - in the case of the T Cha system, tracing two noble gases, neon and argon. The observations also mark the first time a double ionization of argon has been detected in a planet-forming disk, the team writes in the paper.

"The neon signature in our images tells us that the disk wind is coming from an extended region away from the disk," Bajaj said. "These winds could be driven either by high-energy photons - essentially the light streaming from the star - or by the magnetic field that weaves through the planet-forming disk."

In an effort to differentiate between the two, the same group, this time led by Andrew Sellek, a postdoctoral researcher at Leiden University in the Netherlands, performed simulations of the dispersal driven by stellar photons, the intense light streaming from the young star. They compared these simulations to the actual observations and found dispersal by high-energy stellar photons can explain the observations, and hence cannot be excluded as a possibility.

That study concluded that the amount of gas dispersing from the T Cha disk every year is equivalent to that of Earth's moon. These results will be published in a companion paper, currently under review with the Astronomical Journal.

All of my life I've heard about the invisible, but seemingly inevitable barrier that the Glass Ceiling represents in women's careers. We've spent so long talking about the Glass Ceiling existing, and what it's like to live and work underneath it, that it seems to me we've never taken the time to move the conversation forwards - to look at what the experience of leadership was like for those women who did manage to break through.

The Glass Cliff is the story of women's leadership journeys beyond the Glass Ceiling.

Is There A Glass Cliff in Tech?

One example of life beyond the Glass Ceiling is the experience of Marissa Mayer, who, in 2012 took on the role of CEO of Yahoo, prompting Forbes to run a piece which began: 'Did Marissa Mayer just receive the job offer of a lifetime or did she just ascend to the pinnacle of the Glass Cliff? That's the question that will be answered over the next several months as Mayer takes over as CEO of Yahoo.'

Five years later, when, after a tumultuous period as the struggling internet giant's leader, Mayer stepped down from her role - amid widespread reports that she had been left 'tarnished' - it seemed that the question had been answered.

From the start, it was clear that Mayer would have her work cut out turning the fortunes of the business around.

Yahoo's period of difficulty, and its struggle to find stability and market fit, was reflected in a period of tumultuous leadership successions. If we include interim CEOs, Mayer was the fifth person to hold the position in a period of less than twelve months.

Unfortunately, this wasn't quite the way things played out. During her time as the leader of Yahoo, Mayer was able to make some positive changes. She rebooted various products, sunset others, and acquired a huge forty-one start-ups.

But the role was not smooth sailing for Mayer. She faced endless scrutiny and criticism during her time as the CEO of the internet giant. Like Karren Brady, she was criticized for the length of her maternity leave (both leaders were criticized for how short, rather than how long their breaks were).

She was also criticized for 'refusing to dwell' on sexism in the workplace, for 'trying to be Steve Jobs' and for being overly didactic, with employees reportedly being told they needed to do things 'because Marissa said so'. The criticisms were endless.

And some of them were well deserved.

In 2015, Verizon launched a takeover of Yahoo. A year later, soon after the merger was complete, Mayer stepped down from her role as Yahoo's CEO and from the business's board. Speaking about her tenure within the business, one analyst commented: 'She was poorly matched to the job from day one [. . .] It wasn't that she didn't work hard. She just lacked the needed skills to execute a turnaround, and the Yahoo board was no apparent help, either.'

Stepping into a new position, particularly one in leadership, is usually the culmination of years of work, expertise and experience - and the cause of much-deserved celebration. In most cases, we enter new roles full of excitement and passion - ready to make our mark in the next step of our professional journey.

It might be for this reason that so much of our cultural discussion about female career advancement has been satisfied with stopping at the Glass Ceiling - if we acknowledge the existence of that barrier, we are then able to build our own imagined narratives about those pioneering women who do manage to break through it.

Not filling in the details beyond that point allows us to picture a new leader flourishing in an environment where her upward trajectory knows no bounds, and the sky is the limit.

But, unfortunately, that is very often not the case. All too frequently, the reality of what happens next is the story of the precarious position of the Glass Cliff, where female leaders are set up to fail, thro...

The Learnovate Centre is delighted to announce that it has secured €9.6m funding from Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland as the technology centre focuses on supporting Irish companies develop technology solutions to address Ireland's emerging skills gaps.

Learnovate are global experts in learning technology helping organisations navigate the complexity of the evolving future of work and learning. Based at Trinity College Dublin, Learnovate helps organisations transform learning experiences in the workplace, schools, universities, and at home. The announcement of €9.6 million funding means the Centre can expand its research and innovation agenda into the future.

The Centre will continue increasing its membership substantially with research suggesting that Learnovate will generate €50m for the Irish economy by 2025 and €100m by 2035.

A €320,000 upgrade to the virtual reality cliffside experience at the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare has been completed.

Located within the Cliffs of Moher Experience visitor centre, the Ledge 4D Experience takes visitors on an interactive 3-minute tour of the cliffs and combines stunning visuals of the world-famous cliffs on a calm summer's day, both above the sea and underwater, with the environmental effects of west of Ireland wind and spray of Moher mist.

State-of-the-art projectors, an upgraded sound system and a tiered standing area to allow for improved viewing conditions also have been installed to add to the overall authenticity of the experience mirroring a real-life bird's-eye view of the Cliffs of Moher over and underwater.

Officially opening the Ledge 4D Experience, Cllr. Joe Cooney, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council said, "I warmly welcome the ongoing investment in the overall visitor experience at the Cliffs of Moher, which remains a primary driver for the local tourism economy. The Ledge 4D Experience brings to life the natural and scenic beautify of the Cliffs of Moher and it will be particularly beneficial to anyone who visits the site on a day when visibility may be poor at the cliff edge."

Commenting on the background to the upgrade, Bobby Kerr, Chair of the Board of Cliffs of Moher Centre DAC said, "When commissioned in 2006, the Ledge visuals were state-of-the-art, but by 2023 were starting to show their age somewhat. As well as this, the projection and sound equipment, although upgraded and maintained over the years, were no longer the most efficient or effective in their class."

"After many months of planning and preparation, work commenced last November to upgrade the experience," added Mr. Kerr. This film itself, although remaining the same, has been updated to modern standards and the accuracy of the content has been improved to show more detail of the Cliff face, the birds, the sea life, and other elements such as the wave motion and grass movement."

Set to a rousing soundtrack composed by famous local musician Davy Spillane, the Ledge 4D Experience follows a gannet over the cliff edge of the cliffs, down into the water to explore the wide range of life under the waves, and back up past the impressive Sea Stack and O'Brien's Tower.

The project was delivered on behalf of Cliffs of Moher Experience by Rockbrook Engineering, DMW Creative, Marcon Construction and Alphachannel.

A hotly contested competition for first place at the 21st National Games Fleadh between Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) and the University of Limerick (UL), saw the latter edge out the hosts to take victory by the slightest of margins at the competition held on the TUS Tipperary Campus.

Games Fleadh 2024, the Games Design & Development competition, announced record attendance this year, as the best of the country's third-level student game developers came together to battle it out for 13 titles and the coveted Robocode competition.

First-year programming students who participated in Robocode were provided with an opportunity to demonstrate their programming abilities and advance their knowledge of GUI programming, API usage and Artificial Intelligence. Those watching the Robocode 2024 competition were provided with a hotly contested, nail-biting final as it was won by UL's Nathan Ndlovu, Lewis Ubebe, Maksims Gerkis, with TUS Thurles's Toby Womack coming a close second.

TUS Moylish student Kamil Sibiga came third and fourth was SETU Carlow's Darian Byrne, and Robert McGregor in this competition.

Meanwhile competitors, competing as teams, were asked to focus on the theme 'Starting with Nothing" as they designed action-packed games to test their skills. In total 13 awards were given out in the competition.

Congratulating this Games Fleadh 2024 winners, President of TUS Professor Vincent Cunnane said, "The gaming industry has developed and expanded significantly since the first ever Games Fleadh held on the TUS Thurles Campus 21 years ago. It is now one of the fastest-growing sectors in the global economy, providing new career opportunities for graduates.

The growing popularity of a career in this €165 billion industry was evident from the record number of third and second-level students attending this year's event, and hoping to forge an exciting career in Game Development."

Dr Liam Noonan, Programme Leader for BSc in Software Development with Games Programming TUS, said, "Once again, we saw a very high level of talent on display at this year's Games Fleadh, and the high standard of the talent was especially evident in the small margin between the different results I would like to thank our sponsors, EA Games, FiServ and all other supporters who contribute massively to the success of Games Fleadh each year, and this year was no exception."

AI Needs You How We Can Change AI's Future and Save Our Own, reviewed

This book is well written and has a multi-decade perspective on the issues we face, and the deep deep challenges that we need to overcome for a less negative future. We enjoyed reading the book and felt it capture the issues well, with a good analysis of the problems we face. At the same time we also became a little depressed, because, is it actually possible to successfully deal with these issues.

When you look at the US and it is, currently, a toss up in the US presidential race between someone very old, and someone running on a list of personal grievances they want to redress, you wonder, how on earth is this even a choice for sane people?

You could argue that, in the context of global warming, despite repeated warnings, humanity has failed, time and time again, to act in its own best interests. Therefore how, or why, can we even have confidence that this new, and utterly existential challenge can be dealt in any sort of effective way. This book is informative, well written and clearly identifies the issues.

The challenge however is whether humanity itself can do anything to stop something that surely, down the line, is not going to act in our own best interests…?
