Quantum technology is advancing quickly and will revolutionise computing. As we enter the quantum age, we can expect our current supercomputers to be overtaken and quantum technology to become widespread.

In many industries such as pharmaceuticals, drug discovery, logistics, climate change preparedness, financial modelling and smart city operations, quantum computing is expected to bring about drastic, positive change. Conversely, quantum technology will also have some negative impacts, including advancing the complexity and sophistication of cyber-attacks in unprecedented ways.

The European Union has realized the great potential of quantum technology, but also related cybersecurity risks. In its 2021 communication '2030 Digital Compass: the European way for the Digital Decade', EU policymakers state the need for "developing new European standards or revision of existing ones on safety, privacy and cybersecurity of quantum computing and communication technology." Such standards on quantum cybersecurity have been listed as one of eight priorities for 2024.

The Status Quo

As personal and business users, we've rapidly moved to an understanding of digital services as secure-by-design. In some cases that means information we're sharing is encrypted. However, quantum computers will soon break traditional cryptography algorithms, meaning services designed to be encrypted will no longer be so. Coupled with powerful AI, quantum technologies will have computation capabilities which can break even some of the strongest cryptography algorithms widely used today.

For businesses, this means that becoming quantum ready should be a digital priority now, or risk facing critical future security threats as organisations scramble to adjust to a new world of quantum cybercrime.

Quantum readiness comes in stages

Becoming quantum ready does not happen overnight, which places further importance on starting early. Prior to even starting any digital transformations, organisations should be looking to conduct risk assessments based on comprehensive cryptography inventories.

Quantum algorithms, such as Grover and Shor, have already been shown to be capable of breaking some the most widely used cryptographic algorithms amongst organisations. Taking inventory allows businesses to take a targeted approach to their transformation, prioritising the weakest, higher risk applications or systems before moving on to others.

Once a risk assessment has been conducted, the next step towards protecting a business from attack is to start replacing potentially vulnerable algorithms with quantum-safe ones by, firstly, becoming cryptography-agile. A cryptography-agile application can support multiple cryptographic algorithms and, additionally, enables faster migration to new cryptographic algorithms.

Cryptography agility also means that organisations can use both traditional and quantum-safe algorithms, the purpose of this being that, should vulnerability be identified in a quantum-safe algorithm, organisations can still run alternative algorithms.

Organisations can also start preparing for a post-quantum world immediately by de-coupling crypto logic from business logic in applications to improve security for key business operations and, where possible, should begin automating cryptographic keys and digital certificate management.

Cloud services can help

Migrating to the cloud and working with cloud providers is also an effective step that organisations can take towards being quantum ready. Many cloud providers and service providers like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) are already working to implement post-quantum cryptography (PQC) algorithms which secure cloud services they offer.

The method identifies magnetic materials solely based on their crystal structure, eliminating the need for time-consuming experiments and simulations

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are exciting materials. In a recent breakthrough, researchers from TUS have used deep learning to predict SMMs from 20,000 metal complexes. The predictions were made solely based on the crystal structures of these metal complexes, thus eliminating the need for time-consuming experiments and complex simulations.

As a result, this method is expected to accelerate the development of functional materials, especially for high-density memory and quantum computing devices.

Discovering Single-Molecule Magnets

Synthesizing or studying certain materials in a laboratory setting often poses challenges due to safety concerns, impractical experimental conditions, or cost constraints. In response, scientists are increasingly turning to deep learning methods which involve developing and training machine learning models to recognize patterns and relationships in data that include information about material properties, compositions, and behaviors.

Using deep learning, scientists can quickly make predictions about material properties based on the material's composition, structure, and other relevant features, identify potential candidates for further investigation, and optimize synthesis conditions.

Now, in a study published on 1 February 2024 in the International Union of Crystallography Journal (IUCrJ), Professor Takashiro Akitsu, Assistant Professor Daisuke Nakane, and Mr. Yuji Takiguchi from Tokyo University of Science (TUS) have used deep learning to predict single-molecule magnets (SMMs) from a pool of 20,000 metal complexes. This innovative strategy streamlines the material discovery process by minimizing the need for lengthy experiments.

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are metal complexes that demonstrate magnetic relaxation behavior at the individual molecule level, where magnetic moments undergo changes or relaxation over time. These materials have potential applications in the development of high-density memory, quantum molecular spintronic devices, and quantum computing devices. SMMs are characterized by having a high effective energy barrier (Ueff) for the magnetic moment to flip.

However, these values are typically in the range of tens to hundreds of Kelvins, making SMMs challenging to synthesize.

The researchers used deep-learning to identify the relationship between molecular structures and SMM behavior in metal complexes with salen-type ligands. These metal complexes were chosen as they can be easily synthesized by complexing aldehydes and amines with various 3d and 4f metals. For the dataset, the researchers worked extensively to screen 800 papers from 2011 to 2021, collecting information on the crystal structure and determining if these complexes exhibited SMM behavior.

Additionally, they obtained 3D structural details of the molecules from the Cambridge Structural Database.

The molecular structure of the complexes was represented using voxels or 3D pixels, where each element was assigned a unique RGB value. Subsequently, these voxel representations served as input to a 3D Convolutional Neural Network model based on the ResNet architecture. This model was specifically designed to classify molecules as either SMMs or non-SMMs by analyzing their 3D molecular images.

When the model was trained on a dataset of crystal structures of metal complexes containing salen type complexes, it achieved a 70% accuracy rate in distinguishing between the two categories. When the model was tested on 20,000 crystal structures of metal complexes containing Schiff bases, it successfully discovered the metal complexes reported as single-molecule magnets. "This is the first report of deep learning on the molecular structures of SMMs," says Prof. Akitsu.

ESB Networks has confirmed that it has 1,000 MW (one Giga Watt) of solar PV generation connected to Ireland's electricity network.

This figure includes 500 MW of utility-scale solar connections, 369 MW of which is from larger projects connected to the transmission system, managed by EirGrid. The figure also includes 300 MW of microgeneration (mainly domestic rooftop solar) and 200 MW of non-exporting solar generation.

One Giga Watt of solar power is enough to power the equivalent of approximately 400,000 homes when it is sunny. For context, peak demand on Ireland's electricity system is approximately 5.5 GW.

Minister for Climate Eamon Ryan TD says: "The 'rooftop revolution' has seen solar panels becoming an increasing feature across every town and suburb of the country, providing clean, indigenous electricity on over 82,000 homes. This rapid scale up in micro- and small-scale generation has been mirrored in the rapid growth in the connection of utility-scale solar farms.

Since I launched the first solar farm in Co Wicklow in May 2022, there has been a major acceleration in the deployment of solar farms, providing new income streams to farmers, supporting jobs and benefitting communities across the country.

Today's announcement marks an important milestone in Ireland's journey to 8GW of solar connections by 2030 and shows that even in 'cloudy Ireland' we can harness our homegrown green resources to power homes and businesses."

Welcoming the reaching of the milestone, Nicholas Tarrant, Managing Director of ESB Networks says: "Enabling the connection of 1,000 MW of clean solar power onto Ireland's electricity network is a significant collective achievement for ESB Networks, our solar industry partners and indeed the 82,000-strong cohort of microgeneration customers across Ireland. This scale of connections is underpinned by our sustained investment in a cleaner, more resilient, and more flexible electricity system.

It is reducing our dependence on imported fossil fuels and ultimately delivering the electricity network for Ireland's clean, electric future."

Conall Bolger of the Irish Solar Energy Association says: "Reaching one Giga Watt of connected solar is a major milestone both for Ireland's fight against climate change and for our solar industry. Meeting our climate action targets requires a significant contribution from solar electricity, connecting 1 Giga Watt less than two years after Ireland's first solar farm was energised demonstrates the genuine potential of solar.

There is a strong pipeline of new solar farms currently under development and we must continue to support this momentum to enable Ireland to achieve its goal of 8 GW of solar by 2030."

Launched this month, a new European collaboration, DEM-AWE, is set to demonstrate a battery energy storage system powered by a kite (K-BESS), a groundbreaking market-entry application for airborne wind energy (AWE).

This mobile renewable energy solution, named K-BESS and developed by the Dutch start-up Kitepower, can potentially replace diesel-burning generators in agriculture and construction, while also enabling clean electrification for many people living in remote and island communities as well as for disaster relief applications.

Kitepower joined forces with the industry association Airborne Wind Europe, Irish specialist services company BlueWise Marine, French consultancy Laminak Energy and Mayo County Council to demonstrate the viability of K-BESS and how it can help the airborne wind energy technology enter the energy markets.

"Kitepower is honoured to be part of the DEM-AWE project. We can demonstrate our K-BESS technology and create the jobs of tomorrow by training local operators. This is a major milestone of making this new class of renewable energy systems a reality, which will have a huge potential to reduce CO2 emissions," says Johannes Peschel, Founder and CEO at Kitepower.

Capturing wind energy at 300m heights and above, airborne wind energy taps into previously inaccessible energy resource, offering an additional boost for achieving targets for innovative renewable energy technologies set in the EU Renewable Energy Directive and National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs).

The DEM-AWE demonstration will span a minimum of 12 months with a K-BESS prototype sized for its capability to charge a 400kWh battery in 10 hours at two test-sites in Mayo, Ireland, and Dirksland, Netherlands. This extensive trial will provide valuable operational data, experience, and feedback from stakeholders to produce a reliable new solution.

Both test sites are already permitted and consented for Kitepower's AWE system through the MegaAWE project, implemented through Interreg North-West Europe during 2020-2023. The DEM-AWE project will extensively focus on actual operations towards performance validation, user involvement, safety, maintenance, optimisation of control strategies and regulatory compliance.

Social acceptance is a key aspect of the development of renewable energy solution and Mayo County Council will be facilitating the engagement process with the local population and stakeholders.

BlueWise Marine and Laminak Energy will conduct a market-entry study and translate the lessons learnt into a joint action plan, preparing for wider airborne wind energy roll-out in Ireland and Germany as well as replication in other countries in North-West Europe.

The results of this project and the learnings from the MegaAWE project will be consolidated into a comprehensive action plan by Airborne Wind Europe, with support of BlueWise Marine and Laminak Energy.

For every maturing energy technology, system demonstration is crucial to enter the energy market. By gathering several months of track-record at two different test sites, the DEM-AWE project will provide the EU Commission, the Member States, utilities, and industry stakeholders with proof of the added-value airborne wind energy can bring to the North-West Europe renewable energy mix.

"The DEM-AWE project provides an excellent opportunity to build confidence among regulators, investors, European policy makers and national governments about the opportunities that AWE will be able to deliver as an emerging, innovative technology. Moreover, by exploring the key entry markets for the first commercial AWE systems, the DEM-AWE project will benefit the airborne wind energy sector as a whole," says Kristian Petrick, Secretary General of Airborne Wind Europe.

Supported by the Interreg North-West Europe Programme and led by Airborne Wind Europe, the DEM-AWE project represents a significant step towards a more diversified, sustainable, and inclusive energy future.

This book has a great cover, and is well put together, with clear progression of explaining the historical context, how it has lead us to where we are now. All of this scanned well and is definitely a good primer to bring you up to speed if you are unclear about how we have got to where we are now. The bookmarks and the gifted NFT are very cool too. If you know nothing about this area then this is a really good book for you.

The one thing that we felt that the reader was left wanting for, was a more specific outline of where the future opportunities are. Yes blockchain has potential, yes tokenisation hold opportunities, but is this what was promised in the early circa 2017 ICO boom, and then, several years later, with the De-Fi euphoria vibe too. Right now too, Bitcoin and Ether among others are on the charge again.

However is this based on real reasons for growth, the imminent halving among other factors, or just the latest wave on the crypto roller coaster.

Potentially the growth is a recognition of the actual applications and development of the tools to make this technology now viable. With this book, from such an informed inside, we would have liked more details about the future of the internet could be like. It is in this area that we would have liked more details on what the future developments might look like. This might be the impossible question to answer, but, for a book that got a lot right, this area seemed slightly bloodless.

Connor Murphy is an all-around great guy, and in every conversation I have with him, I connect way more dots than I ever could have expected. Connor has a background in computer science, startups, venture capital, and management consulting.

He was previously the Managing Director of the Techstars SAP.iO program in Berlin and he has invested in 30 pre-seed technology ventures that have an enterprise value greater than $1bn. The undercurrent for all of this was Connor's founding of DataHug in 2009, a collaborative forecasting and pipeline management solution that he sold to Callidus Cloud (now owned by SAP) back in 2013.

The Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Dara Calleary TD, has officially opened the new €5.2 million extension at Platform94, affirming its position as the largest technology innovation centre in the west of Ireland.

The Galway city location, which acts as the headquarters for Platform94, has increased substantially to 66,000 sq ft across four floors, while also significantly expanding its remit in facilitating the development and expansion of the tech cluster and knowledge economy across the entire western region.

It is estimated that Platform94 will bring a Gross Added Value (GVA) of over €66.8 million to the regional economy in 2024, while further cementing its position as the definitive centre of excellence enabling the west's scaling technology businesses to reach their growth and global ambitions.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this month, Platform94 was formerly known as Galway Technology Centre (GTC), and was originally founded in 1994 to meet the needs of an emerging cluster of ICT companies outside the capital. It is owned by Galway Chamber and WestBIC and supported by Enterprise Ireland. Over the last three decades, Platform94 has grown its physical presence in Galway to 11 times its original scale, having opened its doors as a 6,000 sq ft facility in February 1994.

Since then, it has undergone three expansions, with the latest development to 66,000 sq ft coming on the back of a successful Regional Enterprise Development Fund bid to Enterprise Ireland.

The new extension brings with it a range of immersive support facilities that have been created to enable the Platform94 member companies to scale and grow. A state-of-the-art video conferencing boardroom, an additional 15 private Grade A office spaces, an ultra-modern media production suite, and a wellness centre, are among the new facilities on offer. These amenities will provide members with an optimum environment to thrive and succeed.

Completed at the end of 2023, the building is already at 85 percent occupancy, with more than 600 people employed on site and an additional 100 positions currently open. Platform94 has exceeded its own job creation targets by 100, and has done so two years ahead of time. Within the next three years, it expects to reach 95 percent capacity, creating 748 direct roles and 479 indirect positions, bringing a GVA of €83.2 million annually.

Platform94 is recognised nationally and internationally as the west of Ireland's definitive centre of excellence for scaling technology companies, and a leader in accelerating innovation-driven enterprises on a global scale. Physically in Galway, and through its regional outreach and collaboration programmes, it offers leadership and knowledge transfer to scaling companies, enabling them to elevate their business to the next level.

It does so by providing access to the knowledge, network, funding and office supports, enabling them to scale and build thriving businesses in the west, and assisting them in unlocking their true international potential.

Officially opening the new extension, Minister Dara Calleary congratulated the team and said:

"I am delighted to be here today to officially open the extension to Platform94 in Galway. This remarkable state-of-the art facility will play a central role in enabling the growth of scaling enterprises in the West and further afield.

The extended space at Platform94 will accommodate close to 800 people and will accelerate entrepreneurial activity in Galway, providing space for technology companies to meet, collaborate and ideate, with access to cutting-edge technology including a fully integrated production suite.
