Global trading, Irish-owned company LotusWorks has announced significant growth as its annual results show it has more than doubled its turnover since a Management Buy Out (MBO) of the LotusWorks business five years ago.

The technical and engineering company is projecting 106m turnover in its current financial year (ending February 29, 2024). Surpassing 100m in global revenues is huge growth since the MBO in 2018, when turnover stood at 45m.

The company's turnover for last year (ending February 28, 2023) was just under 98m and was significantly up on the previous year which stood at just under 73m for year ending February 2022.

The company will add 100 new jobs globally over the next 18 months and has credited its current high-performing team as being the driving force behind this significant growth in buoyant market conditions.

Employee numbers at LotusWorks have also almost doubled since 2018 with 648 people now working for the company, which is headquartered in Sligo. This is up from 355 in 2018.

Some of the 100 new roles it will be hiring for globally over the next 18 months are in the following areas: engineering, operations management, finance, and data analytics.

LotusWorks, which was established in 1989, is one of Ireland's largest and longest-established engineering services outsourcing companies and specialises in managing scopes of work within global manufacturing facilities.

It has operations in Ireland and the US, partnering with the world's leading manufacturers across the semiconductor, pharmaceutical, medical device and data centre sectors.

One of the main reasons for the company's growth has been an increased demand globally for chip manufacturing. LotusWorks works with many of the major players in the semi-conductor sector as a strategic partner to commission FAB facilities that produce chips. However, growth has also been as a result of the continued expansion of other sectors including pharmaceutical.

LotusWorks is using this period of growth to reinvest in the company by adding expertise, building training and development programmes, improving employee benefits and enhancing business software and process automation to future proof the growing business.

Gníomhaireacht Fuinnimh an Iarthair (GFI) is one of three Local Energy Agencies in the LEAP (Local Energy Agencies for Peripheral Regions) project established by the Aran Islands Energy Cooperative with the support of Údarás na Gaeltachta and the European Union.

The Local Energy Agencies (LEAs) were established to support homeowners, communities and businesses to implement energy retrofit upgrades in the region.

Atlantic Technological University (ATU) in collaboration with its partners, Aran Islands Energy Cooperative, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal County Councils, received EU LIFE funding to implement a work plan for retrofitting houses so that the houses are warmer, cheaper to heat and more valuable. Local Energy Agencies in Peripheral regions (GFAF or LEAP in English), funding will be provided to set up 3 Local Energy Agencies in the region as outlined below.

LEAP is designed as a multi-initiative approach to developing real and area-based home retrofit projects using the strategy outlined below.

Phase1: Establishing Local Energy Agencies

Phase2: Support improved local supply chains in the region - Create Home Retrofit Delivery Frameworks

Step3: Encouraging home owners in the region by providing them with independent advice and an integrated home renovation service

Phase 4: Work with multiple grant and finance providers to develop innovative and different funding models forarea-based home retrofit projects - all home owners will have an option to participate

Step5: Work with Local Authorities and Social Housing Bodies to start a multi-year work plan for area-based house retrofitting projects

Phase 1 of the strategy has now started and is supporting the establishment of 3 Local Energy Agencies through the LEAP project.

Technology is ever evolving, bringing new opportunities and presenting new challenges. In order to capitalise on and overcome same, cloud remains front of mind for many organisations, and there has been a persistent narrative that hyperscale public cloud adoption is the only way forward. However, this is not necessarily true.

Using cloud technology or infrastructure is not a one-size-fits-all approach, with different organisations and industries having unique requirements and specific objectives. In certain cases, cloud repatriation - the migration back to privately owned infrastructure - is a significantly more cost-effective way to run production IT workloads.

The bottom line is the bottom line

Large public cloud providers have a by-design complexity to their pricing, which organisations need to consider. While cloud adoption has low upfront costs and so is often preferable for startups, as the company grows, it can become unwieldy and expensive, particularly in busy production environments.

Some companies, like 37 Signals, have significantly reduced costs by switching back to self-owned infrastructure. Meanwhile, other organisations such as Ahrefs say they have made significant savings by pulling back from public cloud adoption in the first place. Either way, there is arguably a cost-driven shift back to owned infrastructure as the fog begins to clear on the realities of cloud adoption versus the bottom line.

Different strokes for different folks

Nuances on the subject of the cloud have been lost. The overarching industry message for over a decade has been that CIOs and CTOs need to be delivering cloud-first or cloud-only strategies. With the rate of technological change, it's imperative that companies need to adapt and evolve to gain an advantage in increasingly competitive environments. While they must be open to change, due diligence and a total understanding of the costs, risks, and deliverable organisational benefits is equally important.

It's crucial for IT decision-makers to understand what will work for their businesses - an all-in cloud strategy might not be the best fit for delivering benefits. That's not to say that companies should reject cloud altogether. Hybrid infrastructure - a mix of on-premise, private cloud, or data centre colocation - is often the optimum route for organisations.

Reaping the repatriation rewards

So, what are the rewards for those who take the leap down from the cloud? Reduced costs are a major factor. Cloud-based strategies can often result in 'bill shock', particularly for enterprises, as cloud costs are nearly impossible to accurately forecast.

Cloud repatriation can also enable better control of data. In turn, this allows for increased compliance with internal or external policies which is especially crucial for companies working with sensitive information, such as those in the financial or healthcare sectors.

Essentially, cloud can be great - but usually for certain workloads, business types or specific objectives. Undoubtedly there are many business benefits, but it's important for organisations to first assess their requirements and identify what it is they want to achieve through cloud adoption.

As with anything, and especially when it comes to technology, companies need to develop a thorough strategy and do the groundwork to select the right cloud infrastructure and a provider that will work for them, rather than simply following the crowd.

It can be difficult when organisations feel like they're being left behind in terms of technological advancements. However, cloud repatriation can enable organisations to regain control and navigate an increasingly complex landscape. While it takes courage to go against the grain, this can make better business sense and help organisations to maximise the value of their investment.

As the year comes to a close, the annual Google Year in Search results reveal the questions we turned to Google for answers for, the people who inspired us and the daily searches the country had in common.

In a year where Ireland competed in two World Cups it's no surprise that the two top spots on the most searched sports list were the Rugby World Cup in pole position followed by the Women's Football World Cup. The nation's interest in the Rugby World Cup is also clear in the How to list as How to Watch the Rugby World Cup was one of the most searched questions people turned to Google for help with.

The simultaneous release of blockbuster movies Oppenheimer and Barbie caught the world's attention, and in Ireland, Oppenheimer topped the most searched movies list with Barbie in second place. People also turned to Google to find out what the most searched movie is about as 'What is Oppenheimer about?' was one of the most popular 'What is' questions people asked Google this year. In a bumper box office year people also searched for Mission Impossible 7, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 and Cocaine Bear.

The Top 10 Most Googled recipe list gives us a glimpse into what Ireland has been cooking this year. TikTok viral recipes took over the list with Viking Toast topping the list and Marry Me Chicken, Adobo and Smash Burgers all featuring in the Top Ten. 2023 was the year of the Pornstar Martini, not only was it the second most searched recipe but How to drink a Pornstar Martini was the fourth most popular question people asked Google this year.

Google Search has long been the location people head to when in search of finding entertainment, in particular for help on what to watch on television. The Last of Us was the most searched TV programme of the year and other shows that got people searching were Welcome to Wrexham, the White Lotus and Kin.

The world of Irish TV also featured on the Most Searched People list as both the current and former host of The Late Late Show appear on the list following the show's host change for only its fourth time in history. Ryan Tubridy is the fourth most searched person while Patrick Kielty is the seventh most searched person on the list.

In a year where many Irish music legends sadly passed away it's no surprise that several featured on the Losses list including Sinead O'Connor, Shane McGowan and Christy Dignam. Ireland also searched for other notable losses from around the world, Matthew Perry, Tina Turner and Lisa Marie Presley all feature on the list.

Turning to Google to ask questions is an everyday occurrence for most people and while How to claim rent tax credit was the most searched question of the year in Ireland, other important questions on the list included How to solve a Rubik's cube and How to use chopsticks.

Wexford's growing tech community have a new place to get together, share ideas and network thanks to the re-launch of Wexford Tech Meetup. The first event took place at Scurri offices on Selksar Street on Tuesday December 5th 2023, with upcoming events planned for 2024.

Over thirty tech professionals from a wide range of companies were in attendance, including employees from Iarnród Éireann, Distilled, South East Technological University (SETU), NVD, Teamwork.com and Scurri.

Open to all tech professionals in the South East Area, Wexford Tech Meetup was organised by Gary Meehan (CTO and Founder, Retrograde), Alan Moran (Software Engineering Manager, Mastercard) and Colm O'Connor (Brand Manager, Scurri).

"There is a thriving tech scene in Wexford and the South East," mentioned Gary Meehan, "With a wide selection of start ups, scale-ups and established tech companies at the forefront of Irish tech emerging from the area. Wexford Tech Meetup provides a space for tech professionals and enthusiasts from the South East to share ideas, concepts and build connections."

The first speaker of the event was Gary Meehan (Founder at Retrograde) who discussed how a high-stakes scenario in a dynamic startup environment propelled his team to deploy GPT-4 into production swiftly and efficiently. This presentation was followed by Stephen White (Software Developer at Scurri) who presented on the power of automation in software development. Strong audience participation took place throughout the evening.

"We are delighted to have had such a strong turnout for the first of the new Wexford Tech Meetups," mentioned Colm O'Connor, Brand Manager at Scurri, "When Alan and Gary posted on LinkedIn to gauge interest in such an event, our founder Rory O'Connor was only delighted to sponsor the event having previously set up the Wexford Tech Meetup in 2011. She uses a combination of numerical simulations, theory and comparison to observations from various missions to explore her science questions.

A 16 million purpose-built innovation centre, Work IQ, situated in Tallaght's newly developed Innovation Quarter, is on track to open early next year. Enquiries are now being taken at www.workiq.ie to register interest in becoming part of the Work IQ community through the various services on offer.

The four-storey, 2,980m2 building offers three floors of flexible office accommodation to support businesses, local entrepreneurs, start-ups or SMEs. The centre also features a range of communal facilities on the ground floor, including meeting rooms and a public café facing directly onto a stunning new urban plaza.

Work IQ will accommodate up to 60 businesses and play a major role in developing start-up enterprises in order to support the creation of over 700 jobs worth 80m to the economy. Key features of this cutting-edge facility designed as a hub for businesses that are serious about innovation, technology and scaling up will include:

· Private and shared office space and co-working options

· A variety of meeting and conference rooms and an on-site café

· Tailored business support, including training, mentoring, funding support and skills development

Speaking in advance of the opening of Work IQ, Colm Ward, Chief Executive of South Dublin County Council, said:

"Our new Work IQ facility will provide start-ups and entrepreneurs with workspaces and opportunities in a place designed to support business growth and development. Strategically located on land owned by South Dublin County Council in Tallaght Town Centre, Work IQ is a key part of a new urban district called Innovation Quarter Tallaght being developed by the Council that also includes a new cost rental apartment scheme (which, along with Work IQ, will be served by the Tallaght District Heating Scheme, Heatworks) and a new public park called Innovation Square. The 16 million project is funded by the Council, with significant support from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage through the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund.

The building was designed for South Dublin County Council by a multi-disciplinary team led by McCullough Mulvin Architects and its delivery will complement a combined investment of over 80m in infrastructure projects in the centre of Tallaght, including the aforementioned Innovation Quarter, new link roads, major public realm enhancement, a fourth stand at Tallaght Stadium (making it a 10,000-seater, UEFA Category 4 stadium capacity) and a proposed new Heritage Centre.

Dell Technologies is helping customers achieve faster AI and generative AI (GenAI) performance with new enterprise data storage advancements and validation with the NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD AI infrastructure.

"Storage performance is a critical factor for successful AI and generative AI outcomes," said Arthur Lewis, president of Infrastructure Solutions Group, Dell Technologies. "Customers are relying on us to continually push the boundaries of storage innovation, including removing data access bottlenecks that limit the throughput and scalability of compute-intensive applications.

Addressing the need for high performance and efficiency for AI storage

New advancements from Dell PowerScale, the world's most flexible, secure and efficient scale-out file storage system, address increasing customer demands for higher AI and GenAI performance.

Now, with PowerScale OneFS software enhancements, companies can prepare, train, fine-tune and inference AI models more quickly. With new PowerScale all-flash storage systems based on the latest generation of Dell PowerEdge servers, customers will see up to a 2X performance increase for streaming reads and writes.

"We make an engineering change every 17 minutes, a speed unachievable without a powerful IT infrastructure that underpins all of our processes," said Dan Keyworth, director of business technology at McLaren Racing. PowerScale will offer a new smart scale-out capability to improve single compute node performance for enhanced GPU utilization, leading to faster storage throughput for AI training, checkpointing and inferencing.

"Dell continues to design its file and object storage solutions with the customer in mind, allowing them to modernize their infrastructure with an AI-ready foundation to support the most intensive workloads, such as generative AI," said Scott Sinclair, practice director of Enterprise Strategy Group.

Dell PowerScale undergoes validation for NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD

Through Dell's collaboration with NVIDIA, customers will be able to take advantage of a validated combination of NVIDIA DGX systems, Dell PowerScale storage and NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand and Spectrum Ethernet networking to achieve faster and more efficient AI storage. Dell's solution is expected to be the first ethernet storage solution validated on NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD.
