Drift racing is an emerging sport in the racing community. It focuses on not driving straight but instead on guiding the car sideways through corners and checkpoints. As such the cars and tracks vary hugely from the standard NASCAR track or the F1 style where all cars must be optimized intensely for their role.

What is Drift racing, insights from Drift Masters

Drifting is also different from contemporary points in that it is not all about simply who comes first but drivers are graded on a points-based system. This system works with a few criteria:

speed, each corner is supposed to be taken as fast as you can while maintaining the line.

Angle, the car must have a significant amount of angle, the more the better, however, this slows down the car so it is a balancing factor between this and speed.

The line is the predetermined zone that the judges set out that the drivers have to travel as close as possible to. This is marked out by clipping zones and clipping points, points being on the inside and zones being on the outside of the turns. You basically want to keep the bonnet of the car as close to the clipping points as possible and the boot as close to the clipping zones as possible.

Style, which primarily focuses on showmanship. This could mean a victory donut, aggression, and making the racing as enjoyable as possible. As much burnt rubber as possible.

Contestants are pitted against each other in this way in a one-on-one style format in a series of eliminations with a maximum of 100 points up for grabs in each run. In the eliminations, they follow the format of tandem runs, with one car being the lead car and the other one imitating the lead car. Drivers switch places after each run, ensuring a level playing field. These runs make up a massive amount of the sport and are a spectacle to watch

As such drift masters is an incredibly new and emerging sport, with this being the largest attendance for a final to date, being at 52000 people in the stadium. The stadium itself was a lovely venue, extremely modern and well furnished, and quite comfortable hosting the people.

Outside of the main event itself, the exterior was covered in cars representing either racing history, drift history, or big milestones in Poland's car culture, like the Delorian, Mitsubishi Lancer (hugely popular drifting car), and Ferraris. As such this created a wonderful atmosphere for the main event the championship itself.

The main event was a cacophony of noise and rubber and a genuine pleasure to watch, the races were organized in a series of small one-on-one bites with two drivers competing against each other in a series of eliminations. These created quite a good flow to the event with there being a minute or two between each race where the next racers would "warm up their tires" (do donuts and skids) allowing viewers to get up and grab a drink or anything else. As such the atmosphere of the event was extremely positive with everyone having a good time and enjoying the spectacle of the cars.

In regards to the cars themselves, as drift racing is a somewhat contact racing sport quite a bit of spectacle was watching the trackside mechanics and the mechanics back in the pits attempt to fix and coach life back into the cars and keep them running in what can only be called a herculean endurance race, with many cars taking exceptionally bad damage that they were forced to drop out of the competition.

With the speed and the nature of drifting itself this happened quite a lot throughout both days with the cars looking like something from a Mad Max movie by the end of the second day but still managing to deafen the crowd with the engines.

For myself, this sport and this event would be an instant recommendation even for those who are just mildly interested in...

Only a couple of weeks to go before the 11th event happens in Rome, here's another update of what to expect at this years event.

#MFR2023 Overview

HRLocker, a leading provider of global HR compliance platforms for mid-sized, scaling and international businesses, has revealed a startling void between HR professionals' confidence in their GDPR compliance and actual adherence to the regulation.

While an impressive 90% of Irish HR professionals report confidence in their GDPR compliance, the survey showed an alarming 76% had breached the regulation within the past 12 months.

The most prominent GDPR breaches reported are:

Insufficient consent: A startling 40% of HR professionals are failing to obtain clear and explicit consent from employees before collecting, processing and storing personal data. While health data (26%) and sensitive personal data (23%) were the most common areas for breach under this category, one in five (19%) of survey respondents had not attained permission to track employees for activities including internet usage, email communication and track their location. A worrying figure in light of the significant rise in remote and hybrid working.

Failure to respond to Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs): Under GDPR HR professionals must respond to DSARs within 30 days unless an extension is justified. Despite this, almost a third (32%) of respondents reported exceeding this deadline, with 15% taking over 45 days to respond.

Data retention and management issues: 25% of HR professionals admitted not auditing their employee data for more than six months, with a further 9 percent stating they had not reviewed it in the past year. GDPR specifies that personal data should only be kept for as long as it is needed for the purpose for which it was collected. Furthermore, over half (52%) of HR professionals report having to manage data deletion and anonymisation using manual or semi-manual processes.

The survey, conducted in July 2023 and polling 400 Irish HR professionals, also highlights the administrative burden of GDPR for HR professionals.

Tech enabled HR compliance

67% of respondents reported increased resource allocation to meet GDPR compliance demands over the past 12 months and 62% stated it had negatively impacted their ability to focus on core functions such as employee wellbeing, talent acquisition and resource planning.

An overwhelming majority of HR professionals (78%) see technology as an enabler of better, more timely HR compliance. The key areas for improvement include:

Automation of data management - 72%

Data retrieval and reporting - 66%

Automatic policy updates - 64%

Enhanced privacy and anonymisation - 30%

However, in order to maximise the benefits of new technologies, HR departments will need to upskill, as the HRLocker survey revealed that one in three (33%) of professionals reported significant gaps in digital competency.

"There can be no questioning the HR community's commitment to GDPR compliance. However, our research shows that despite their best intentions, a lack of resources, training and tech enablement is leading to major implementation issues, negatively impacting employee privacy and exposing employers to major fines.," says Crystel Rynne, COO at HRLocker. Adding, "To successfully navigate the intricate GDPR landscape effectively, organisations must provide them with the tools and support necessary to make GDPR compliance a strategic advantage, all while safeguarding data protection."

When discussing the climate crisis, many direct a great deal of criticism towards the aviation industry - it is responsible for about 2% of all global emissions. But that is also the figure for the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector. And as cloud-based services and storage increases, emissions caused by data centres will also increase.

How can companies be more sustainable in the mobile economy?

However, the mobile ecosystem can prevent itself from becoming the new villain of the piece by exploiting its unique ability to aid other industries reduce their emissions through the development of new technologies that result in companies and consumers save energy, perhaps leading to a reduction in emissions of around 12.1 gigatonne of CO2 (GtCO2) by 2030. So, the mobile and ICT industry has the potential to become a net negative sector.

What is the mobile economy doing to reduce emissions?

Mobile operator groups representing more than 50% of mobile industry revenues (and 30% of mobile connections globally) have committed to taking accountability for their Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and developing plans to reduce them as much as possible. This includes lowering power usage for computers (etc) and buildings, reducing data storage in energy-consuming data centres, mobile device production and disposal, and limiting travel for conferences, trade shows and meetings in general.

Complete lifecycle assessments of your different products and services is important. Identify any carbon-heavy or wasteful aspects, looking at raw materials and energy use in both production and disposal of old devices.

Innovations in recycling and reuse often come about by identifying wasteful or energy-intensive parts of a product's lifecycle. And a welcome benefit of reducing environmental impact is businesses saving money - for example rather than disposing of its old infrastructure, a data centre may be able to recycle and/or reuse in other areas of its business.

Additionally, telecom consumers should be made more aware of the implications of data waste. Regular file cleanups can reduce emissions and improve efficiency because everything that is stored in the cloud uses energy. It all adds up.

Reducing carbon emissions

Defining a roadmap for repeated reduction in emissions is vital. That starts with knowing what your current impact is. That allows you to set your target(s). Then the scale of your task will be a lot clearer.

Your targets don't need to be perfect. At a recent INSEAD Climate online seminar (during COP27), Al Gore said: It's better to have targets that are 80% correct than not have any climate targets at all.

Offset your unavoidable emissions

With a climate plan defined and annual reduction targets identified, you then need to consider offsetting unavoidable emissions. It is not reasonable to expect a company to achieve a sudden cut of all emissions. Time is required and there will be some emissions that will always remain. Those emissions can be offset, which means paying for the removal of carbon elsewhere.

There are options for this, for example, Direct Air Capture devices that run on renewable geothermal energy in Iceland are built by Swiss company Climeworks. These devices suck air through specialised filters which capture and safely store atmospheric carbon underground. Alternatively, the CO2 can be captured and reutilised, as Co2Value.eu promotes.

Integrating with a nearby geothermal power plant provides Climeworks with the renewable energy required as well as a method for long-term carbon storage - they pump the carbon deep into the earth as part of the renewable energy-creation process.

Thousands of new jobs could be unlocked in the energy storage sector by 2035 according to initial findings from a new Energy Storage Ireland and Green Tech Skillnet report. The estimates range from over 2,000 to up to 5,000 jobs depending on the growth of the sector.

Energy storage could create thousands of new jobs

Headline findings from the upcoming KMPG report "Investment and employment potential in the Irish energy storage sector", were presented today at the annual Energy Storage Conference, which took place in Dublin.

Among the key findings of the report was the potential for 2,000 to 5,000 new jobs to be created in the energy storage sector by 2035 across the areas of construction, engineering, and financing. This includes both direct and indirect employment.

Energy storage is one of the fastest growing segments within the power sector. This growth is mainly driven by battery storage, but other forms of energy storage such as green hydrogen are also becoming prominent, all of which will prove crucial to unlocking Ireland's full renewable potential. However, the lack of a consistent talent pipeline for the sector puts this growth at risk, due to an overall lack of awareness of the sector, lack of defined career paths, and a lack of suitable training courses.

Speaking ahead of the conference, Bobby Smith, Head of Energy Storage Ireland, said: "Energy storage has a key role in helping Ireland reduce carbon emissions and provide cleaner, cheaper energy to Irish consumers. Currently 40% of our electricity comes from renewable sources but we need to get this to 100% by 2035.

Energy storage will play a key role in enabling this shift to renewables. However, for this to happen, a significant uplift in investment in energy storage is needed. Investing in energy storage is also investing in Ireland's energy security, as the more we can rely on renewables like wind and solar, the less we need to rely on imported fossil fuels."

Energy storage supports renewable energy sources like wind and solar by providing essential back up to the electricity grid and by storing renewable energy at times when we have excess supply or when the grid cannot carry the power. This stored renewable energy is then put back into the grid at times of low wind and solar to replace expensive fossil fuels.

Ireland currently has 700 MW of energy storage, however, the KPMG report shows that up to 8 times more storage than this is needed by 2035. New technologies mean that batteries will be able to store more energy for longer periods, but significant investment is needed to capitalise on the potential and respond to the growing needs.

"Without energy storage we will waste a lot of renewable energy and it will make it harder to phase out fossil fuels. For example, in 2020 Ireland had to turn down enough wind energy to power the city of Galway twice over for the year because our grid wasn't strong enough to carry the power or because there was not enough demand for this energy during very windy periods.

With energy storage we could soak up this renewable energy and use it at less windy times or when the grid can accommodate it. We need to upweight our energy storage capabilities, and to do this, we need to ensure the right training and development programmes are in place to enable this.," Bobby added.

Terence McGovern, Director in KPMG Sustainable Futures and lead author of the report said: "Our analysis shows that energy storage has a role to play in all aspects of the Irish economy, from replacing large carbon emitting power stations to reducing costs in our homes and businesses. Ireland's energy storage sector has grown rapidly in recent years, largely on the back of expertise transferred from the wider renewable energy sector but to deliver its full potential we now need to invest in developing the skills and workforce to meet our much greater future energy storage needs. I am sure you have noticed the advertisements on the television and radio about the "Man from Geneva". No, it's Aviva, the parent corrects the child.

I am never sure whether it's the annoying advertisements, like the man from Aviva and the dozen more that are successful, because, annoying as they are, they stick in your memory bank.

Sometimes, I talk to people about advertisements I love, e.g., most of the Guinness ones over the years. But I notice that the ads I love do not embed the product in my subconscious nearly as much as the "Man from Aviva" or old Mr. Brennan.

Coming up soon (apologies for the early mention of the C word) is that train advertisement and that sound that brings me back to my childhood.

I'm speaking at an event shortly, and the title of my talk is;

The subtitle is:

"Create Sticky Messages"

When I told the person who invited me to speak to his group, the subtitle was utterly lost on him although it was as evident to me as night and day.

P.S. So was the title. Creating mystery and intrigue is always good!

Put simply, when you speak to a group, you want your message to stick in their minds long after they have left the room, for the right reasons. If it does, you are more likely to be a success; whether your purpose was to inform the mind, touch the heart or change the will, nothing will happen unless your message (sticks) resonates with them.

My previous sentence is a creative swipe from one of my favourite quotations from Abraham Lincoln

"There are three questions you must ask yourself when preparing a speech.

Does it inform the mind?

Does it touch the emotions?

Does it change the will? "

The days of listening to memorised presentations are long gone.

Like bad advertisements, they/you can be remembered for all the wrong reasons.
