20 tech companies from across the island of Ireland have ranked in the Deloitte EMEA Technology Fast 500 list, which recognises the 500 fastest-growing technology companies across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Two tech companies across the island have ranked in the top 50: Wayflyer and Fibrus. Four ranked in the top 100, including Tines and Buymedia.

Deloitte 2024 Fast 50 winner, Wayflyer, placed 43 in the rankings and achieved a revenue growth rate of 3,169%.

Fibrus ranked 48 and achieved a revenue growth of 3,009%. This company also ranked 2 on Deloitte's 2024 Fast 50 list.

Tines ranked 55 with revenue growth of 2,786%.

Buymedia ranked 73 with revenue growth of 2,208%.

The average growth rate across all 500 ranked companies is 1,585%.

European Movement Ireland and Konrad- Adenauer- Stiftung (KAS) UK and Ireland hosted 'Artificial Intelligence - How will Europe Innovate?' The event explored the challenges and opportunities ahead for AI innovation, political leadership and the future development of AI across Europe, as the European Union sets out its ambitious agenda to become a global leader in AI.

The EU AI act, which forms part of this vision, is the world's first act to regulate the use of AI globally. In force since 2024, with some exemptions for high-risk AI until 2027, the EU AI Act will be fully applicable from 2026, coinciding with Ireland's Presidency of the European Council. Given the presence of multinational tech companies, and leading research institutions in the country, Ireland is well positioned to influence how AI is advanced across the bloc into the future.

Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on EU Affairs, Barry Ward TD said: "As Europe takes bold steps toward responsible AI innovation, today's discussion underscores the need for political leadership that is both visionary and grounded in our shared values. With Ireland preparing to take on the Presidency of the European Council in 2026, along with our thriving tech sector and academic excellence, we are uniquely placed to help lead this conversation and ensure AI development in Europe is ethical, innovative, and inclusive."

Noelle O Connell, CEO European Movement Ireland said; "As the global race continues for leadership in AI, I am delighted to hear the statement from Minister Smyth, welcome Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on EU Affairs Barry Ward TD, and listen to the insights from the expert panel today on AI innovation, as it increasingly shapes all aspects of our daily lives and influences decision making.

We are at a pivotal time when trust in institutions is falling, as revealed by EM Ireland's EU Poll 2025, a majority stated (40%) they do not trust any institution and less than one in three (30%) expressed trust in the EU in Ireland. As the EU seeks to be bold in its vision for AI, it must ensure developments in AI work to serve the public good, and do not erode trust into the future."

Dr. Canan Atilgan, Konrad- Adenauer- Stiftung (KAS) UK and Ireland said; "The EU aims to become a global leader in AI and has unveiled an ambitious Action Plan - a bold strategy designed not merely to compete, but to lead ethically, with a clear, human-centred vision."

Last March, a community health activist in Myanmar published a warning about escalating violence. By Wednesday, it vanished, flagged, filtered, and disappeared by content algorithms she'll never meet, applying standards she wasn't shown, through processes no one can appeal. Halfway across the world that same day, a political influencer with ten million followers posted similar warnings. His remained visible, amplified, promoted.

These decisions join the 3.8 billion moderation verdicts algorithms make daily. According to industry data, 94% receive no human review whatsoever. More telling still: 28% of posts containing keywords like "protest" or "rally" face automatic temporary visibility restrictions, with the severity varying by geographic origin data.

Neither decision was explained. Neither was argued before judges or juries. There were no briefs filed, nor precedents cited, no dissenting opinions. Just lines of code executing their silent calculus of who deserves to be heard. We've replaced courthouse steps with server farms, legal arguments with machine learning parameters, and public deliberation with proprietary algorithms. This isn't simply a technological upgrade. It's a fundamental restructuring of how expression is governed, who holds the power to silence, and which voices carry. Content moderation algorithms don't just enforce rules; they write the rules by deciding which enforcement patterns become normalized.

The EU Digital Services Act requires platforms to publish content moderation statistics. Fourth-quarter numbers showed 217 million removed posts globally. Researcher access to raw data remains restricted. Three platforms have faced preliminary fines for non-compliance with transparency requirements. Four have challenged these fines successfully.

The tech companies building these systems operate in a curious gray zone: too powerful to be mere platforms, too unaccountable to be proper governments, yet exercising authority that rivals both. Meta moderates more speech daily than all courts globally combined. Since 2021, Trust and Safety teams at major platforms have shrunk by an average of 72%, even as moderation decisions continue to multiply. This selective enforcement isn't a bug in the system of algorithmic governance. It might be its defining feature.

Let's take a closer look at who gets silenced and who doesn't.

Twitter (I Refuse to Call It by That Single-Letter Rebrand) - A Broken Dream of Neutrality and Algorithmic Fairness

There was a lot of speculation around the intentions and goals of Elon Musk when he wanted to buy Twitter, which he rebranded as Twitter. It promised a "free speech absolutist" utopia. Instead, it exposed a stark reality: AI content moderation is a tool of selective enforcement. Musk swiftly reinstated banned accounts, including those of Donald Trump and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, while touting algorithmic transparency. Ironically, the latter was even more controversial, considering Alex Jones's involvement in the lawsuit regarding the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Yet, within months, Twitter quietly rolled back these policies under advertiser pressure, banning critics like journalist Aaron Rupar for "abusive behavior" while allowing far-right influencers like Andrew Tate to thrive. This naturally raised questions about Elon Musk's commitment to free-speech, considering the double standards on its implementation on the platform.

This flip-flop epitomizes a broader pattern across tech platforms: public claims of neutrality mask opaque, politically convenient enforcement that privileges tech elites and MAGA-aligned voices. A separate yet still worth considering fact was that one of the first decisions after Twitter's acquisition was firing roughly 80% of the staff (particularly engineers) working in Trust and Safety.

The worst part is this trend is not limited to Twitter. Other platforms are using content moderation to benefit certain groups while marginalizing others.

Huawei Ireland has launched the 2025 edition of its flagship talent programme 'Seeds for the Future', which is open to students in third-level education or above.

Seeds for the Future is Huawei's globally recognised Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) flagship programme. This programme seeks to develop local talent, share knowledge, increase ICT sector awareness and enthusiasm, and foster digital community building.

This year, the programme will take place in Shenzhen, China, for five days (September 1-5), where students will visit Huawei headquarters and take a variety of courses covering the latest innovations in smart cities, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, 5G, and the Internet of Things. As well as technical knowledge, students develop soft skills like cultural awareness, time management and collaboration. The students from the Irish university selected for this year's programme will each be awarded a €1,000 bursary.

To apply for the programme, students should upload their CV, a transcript of their academic records, and a cover letter of 400-600 words and/or a three-minute personal video reflecting on their objectives to participate to this the link.

PayPal has announced the outcome of its 'HACK for IMPACT' initiative hosted in Dunboyne Castle in County Meath. The hackathon for startups saw PayPal support local entrepreneurship and collaborate with 10 local startups over a 24-hour period.

With the help of InnerCity Enterprise, the startups talked through their business plans and challenges, with ideas proposed by more than 30 PayPal mentors from teams across Ireland and Europe. The digital solutions workshopped during the event included website design, app creation and marketing strategies.

Having assessed the projects based on innovation, collaboration, impact, completion and presentation, the judging panel selected three winners. Treats by Sylvia, an award-winning mini cheesecake business enabled by an ecommerce website, took first place.

Mic Drop, a mobile application developed to enable networking and digital tipping for musicians in Ireland, came in second place and Vets Near Home, a home call out veterinarian services provider underpinned by an ecommerce platform with payment functionality, placed third. Eve Brassil, owner of Vets Near Home, commented: "The team have been incredible. They haven't just developed a website but helped me future-proof my business."

The other startups and concepts involved at the hackathon were:

Createnesz Virtual Solutions - A virtual assistance business hoping to develop a website booking system with paymentfunctionality and membership area.

Oliverita - An olive oil business built on an ecommerce and inventory management platform with blockchain capabilities.

Perfect Fit Nutrition - A nutrition and wellness website and blog to offer advisory-based subscriptions.

Print Paper Press - A company specialising in creating vintage-style newspaper prints, empowered by an ecommerce platform with enhanced functionality.

Reflektor Coaching - An online booking and e-learning platform to facilitate wellness coaching.

The Mushroom Butcher - A farm-to-fork organic mushroom business supported by an ecommerce and inventory management platform.

Hug & Hold Doula support - A doula and post-partum/early childhood services provider seeking a mobile application and online booking and e-learning solution.

ESB is supporting Ireland's offshore wind ambitions by rolling out its third consecutive bespoke Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) training programme. MMOs are specialist environmental consultants responsible for monitoring marine megafauna such as whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals and basking sharks, during industry operations. They assist developers comply with environmental regulations and guidelines, while the data collected by MMOs aids in evaluating the effectiveness of mitigation measures.

The aim of the programme is to support the development of marine ecology education and skills, helping successful applicants at the early stages of their careers in the marine environmental profession. It is open to graduates, final-year undergraduates and postgraduate students who are studying or working in marine science or related disciplines. Since its inception in 2023, 11 participants have successfully completed the programme.

Speaking about the success of the programme to date, Niru Dorrian, Senior Offshore Ecology Coordinator at ESB, said: "Offshore wind will play a crucial role in helping Ireland achieve its climate targets, and we need to invest in people now to ensure we have the right skills and expertise for all elements of our projects. As leaders in the transition to clean energy, it is important for developers like ESB to support the marine industry, and in particular, future MMOs. Collaboration is key to a net-zero energy future, and we are grateful to the academic and industry organisations supporting our programme."

The programme is endorsed by The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and the Marine Mammal Observer Association (MMOA). The training comprises a mix of both classroom and field training over the course of three months which includes an offshore survival course at the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI) in Cork.

Thomas Power, a 2023 programme participant, says the initiative has helped his career:

"The ESB MMO training programme was the perfect first step to a career in marine mammal and environmental mitigation. It opens the door in what can sometimes be a difficult career to start out in. The initial training and certifications required for MMO work are costly, and the ESB funding allowed me to commit fully without the financial worry often attached. I would absolutely recommend this programme to anyone thinking of a career in marine mammal mitigation, and if awarded to fully utilise the amazing opportunity this programme offers."

Addleshaw Goddard welcomes its first group of 'Legal Explorers' as Dublin school students participate in the international law firm's social mobility programme in Ireland.

The Addleshaw Goddard Legal Explorer Programme provides school students who have an interest in law the opportunity to experience the legal industry first-hand. The year-long work experience programme designed for fifth-year students runs from October to August in line with the academic year and aims to empower each student, informing them of the different opportunities available to them in post-secondary education.

The first cohort of students participating in the programme are Vivienne Majchrzak and Glory Ahamefule from Mercy Secondary School, Inchicore, Dublin 8, and Aimee Geene from CBS Westland Row, Dublin 2.

To qualify for the programme, applicants must be attending a state-funded, non-fee-paying school or DEIS school within travelling distance of Addleshaw Goddard's Dublin-based office. As part of the programme, each student is given a laptop to keep, a bursary, workshops and a dedicated mentor to provide support throughout the experience.

Throughout the academic year, participants are introduced to different career pathways into the legal sector and meet some of the firm's staff, gaining valuable insight into the lived experiences of those currently working in the sector.

Clients of the Local Enterprise Offices will get the chance to showcase their businesses to over 100,000 visitors for the first time this June Bank Holiday weekend as they take part in the Local Enterprise Village at Bloom 2025.

The Village has been a mainstay of the Ploughing Championships, giving small businesses the chance to put themselves in front of thousands of potential new customers, and it is now setting up at Bloom in the Phoenix Park from 29th May to 2nd June.

As part of the pilot, eight businesses from across the country will take part in the event this time, and that includes a Creative Showcase by three hand-chosen Dublin clients within the Local Enterprise Village that will be located in the Retail Marquee alongside more well-known and recognised brands.

Kieran Comerford, Chair of the Local Enterprise Offices, said, "This is a first-time opportunity for clients of the Local Enterprise Offices to experience the benefits of being at Bloom across the weekend. With over 100,000 visitors expected at the event, this is significant exposure for these small businesses to showcase their products to a massive audience, and we're delighted to give them this platform.

"We have given small businesses this chance at the Ploughing Championships for many years and see the benefits it brings from making sales and generating leads, to just building awareness and learning from other businesses on site. The Local Enterprise Village at Bloom is just one of several initiatives that the Local Enterprise Offices run to foster entrepreneurship across the country. Others include Local Enterprise Week, the National Enterprise Awards, the Student Enterprise Programme, National Women's Enterprise Day and Local Enterprise Showcase. The Local Enterprise Offices in local authorities are funded by the Government of Ireland through Enterprise Ireland.
