University of Arizona astronomers have identified five examples of a new class of star system. They’re not quite galaxies and only exist in isolation.

The new stellar systems contain only young, blue stars, which are distributed in an irregular pattern and seem to exist in surprising isolation from any potential parent galaxy.

Mysterious ‘Blue Blobs’ Reveal New Star System

The stellar systems – which astronomers say appear through a telescope as “blue blobs” and are about the size of tiny dwarf galaxies – are located within the relatively nearby Virgo galaxy cluster. The five systems are separated from any potential parent galaxies by over 300,000 lightyears in some cases, making it challenging to identify their origins.

The astronomers found the new systems after another research group, led by the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy’s Elizabeth Adams, compiled a catalogue of nearby gas clouds, providing a list of potential sites of new galaxies. Once that catalogue was published, several research groups, including one led by UArizona associate astronomy professor David Sand, started looking for stars that could be associated with those gas clouds.

The gas clouds were thought to be associated with our own galaxy, and most of them probably are, but when the first collection of stars, called SECCO1, was discovered, astronomers realized that it was not near the Milky Way at all, but rather in the Virgo cluster, which is much farther away but still very nearby in the scale of the universe.

SECCO1 was one of the very unusual “blue blobs,” said Michael Jones, a postdoctoral fellow in the UArizona Steward Observatory and lead author of a study that describes the new stellar systems. Jones presented the findings, which Sand co-authored, during the 240th American Astronomical Society meeting in Pasadena, California, Wednesday.

“It’s a lesson in the unexpected,” Jones said. “When you’re looking for things, you’re not necessarily going to find the thing you’re looking for, but you might find something else very interesting.”

The team obtained their observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, the Very Large Array Telescope in New Mexico and the Very Large Telescope in Chile. Study co-author Michele Bellazzini, with the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica in Italy, led the analysis of the data from the Very Large Telescope and has submitted a companion paper focusing on that data.

Together, the team learned that most of the stars in each system are very blue and very young and that they contain very little atomic hydrogen gas. This is significant because star formation begins with atomic hydrogen gas, which eventually evolves into dense clouds of molecular hydrogen gas before forming into stars.

“We observed that most of the systems lack atomic gas, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t molecular gas,” Jones said. “In fact, there must be some molecular gas because they are still forming stars. The existence of mostly young stars and little gas signals that these systems must have lost their gas recently.”

The combination of blue stars and lack of gas was unexpected, as was a lack of older stars in the systems. Most galaxies have older stars, which astronomers refer to as being “red and dead.”

“Stars that are born red are lower mass and therefore live longer than blue stars, which burn fast and die young, so old red stars are usually the last ones left living,” Jones said. “And they’re dead because they don’t have any more gas with which to form new stars. These blue stars are like an oasis in the desert, basically.”

The fact that the new stellar systems are abundant in metals hints at how they might have formed.

“To astronomers, metals are any element heavier than helium,” Jones said. “This tells us that these stellar systems formed from gas that was stripped from a big galaxy, because how metals are built up is by many repeated episodes of star formation, and you only really get that in a big galaxy.”

For a moment let’s imagine “Web3”, whatever you think it is, actually exists. I don’t think it exists. Web3 is analogous to a “smart contract”. It is a really cute marketing term most often employed to confuse people and decentralise them from their hard-earned money. But for the purpose of this article, we’ll pretend that Web3 (or 5 depending on who is counting) even exists.

Now that that is out of the way, here’s the real shocker for you.

“When you integrate Web3 into Web2, you get Web1”

What that means is that users of Web3 still don’t own anything. Users of Web3 don’t own anything for the same reason that users of Web2 and Web1 don’t own anything. In both, users don’t own the infrastructure. The internet is actually a vast collection of millions of miles of fibre optic cables that were built, connected and have been maintained by various companies for the last three decades.

Roughly 94% of all internet traffic goes through land-based lines, the rest goes through satellites as part of The Space Economy. Meanwhile, the companies that own the plumbing of the internet, guess how they make money? These companies make money very similar to how Simon Property Group makes money. For those of you who don’t know, Simon Property Group is the largest owner of Malls in America.

Simon makes money by charging stores rent to be in their Malls. So too with Web1. The companies who own the physical infrastructure of the internet (routers, cables, data centres, satellites, etc.) charge businesses to access and use the internet. Turns out that even in cyberspace there are landlords (Google, Amazon, Comcast, etc.) and tenants.

What does this mean for users of the “Web3”? It means that users pay to access the Metaverse and Web3 through Web5+ with their data. Data after all is the native currency of the world wide web. Much like going to the Mall is free (minus the gas), so too is going to the Metaverse or Web3. The trick is, to convince users that things are “free” because users have never been entitled to owning their data. Web3 and the “Metaverse” are free because you are the product. But you already knew that.

Taxation with Representation

Samson Williams said: When you integrate Web3 into Web2, you get the same cables that run Web1. Which means you all pay rent to the cable and satellite owners, who own the infrastructure of the web. Hence why you cannot have a “decentralised” web because someone has to pay for the infrastructure. And to maintain it.

Dan Jones replied:

Very insightful comment Samson, and had me thinking. I suppose the definition of web3 is more about the decentralisation of where and how data is stored than the physical infrastructure that connects it together. But as a concept, it’s seemingly just as pertinent!

Samson Williams replied: Dan Jones in Web3 you still don’t own your data. Because the folks who own the infrastructure make it “free” by charging you for “your” data. So.yeah. Web3! It’s Upton Sinclaire’s The Jungle, just in a digital setting.

Dan Jones replied: Samson Williams to a certain extent, but the question around ownership is different to infrastructure. You can still have ownership of something but it runs on some kind of infrastructure? I own a car but that doesn’t mean I own the road, or that I am even at the mercy of the government.depends on how neo-liberal you’d want to go

Samson Williams replied: Dan Jones, it does though mean you’re taxed for the road. See, whoever owns the infrastructure collects the taxes. Hence why all the VCs are in a rush to decentralise you from your cash. Talk about taxation without representation.

Expleo, a global technology, engineering and consulting service provider, have announced 200 jobs and the opening of its first regional hub in Mahon, Co. Cork. The company is investing €10M in the expansion of its workforce, along with the establishment of a network of regional hubs as part of the investment.

Expleo has been operating in Ireland for over 20 years. Working with enterprise clients to fast-track value-driving innovation, futureproof their businesses and innovate consistently at scale, the company has seen a 25% growth in Irish revenues over the last two years, spurred by widespread digitalisation across all industries. To facilitate this, and further growth, the company will grow from 800 to 1,000 employees in Ireland over the next two years.

The majority of the 200 jobs will be highly skilled IT roles in disciplines including software development, DevOps, software engineering and technical engineering. The new hires will work on transformative technologies and projects such as hyperautomation, robotic process automation (RPA) and agile transformation in industries including life sciences, financial services and aviation.

To support the recruitment process, and to ensure that it attracts the best talent from across Ireland, Expleo will establish a series of regional hubs that will be complementary to the company’s Irish HQ in Dublin and its base in Belfast. The first office in Mahon, Co. Cork, is now open, with subsequent hubs planned for Galway and Limerick.

Team members based in the hubs will be offered the same flexible working arrangements as those in the Dublin and Belfast offices, allowing them to split their time between working from home and working from Expleo’s hub offices or client sites. Regular team collaboration days, meanwhile, will ensure that all new hires will feel included and part of the core Expleo team.

What is self-organization and how does that happen in a decentralized system? How is it different from organizing in physical spaces?

Web3 was initially designed for peer-to-peer transactions, so how do larger networks form out of peer-to-peer transactions? After they form are these networks more static or dynamic?

Some communities have emerged out of black markets, and these systems tend to be extraordinarily resilient, even under constant threat. What can we learn from how they’ve evolved, and are there any lessons we can apply to making our own communities, businesses, or society more resilient?

Are self-organizing systems possible outside of web3 and decentralized environments?

What is needed to make them possible and effective at large scales?

How do web3 and cryptocurrencies currently overlap with our society and economy, and how are they likely to impact us in the future?

Dr. Andrea Baronchelli is Associate Professor in Mathematics at City University of London and Token Economy theme lead at The Alan Turing Institute. He researches how we shape, and are shaped by, the socio-technical systems we inhabit using data science, mathematical modelling, and lab experiments with human subjects.

His work has appeared in a wide range of top scientific journals (including Science, PNAS and Nature Human Behaviour) and has been extensively covered by the media. He was warded the 2019 “Young Scientist Award for Socio and Econophysics” of the German Physical Society.

The Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Leo Varadkar TD and the Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation, Robert Troy TD have welcomed the announcement by the European Commission that CeADAR based in UCD, Dublin and the FactoryxChange consortium in the Midlands are one step closer to being fully approved as European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs).

The European Union is investing over €700m to co-fund an EU-wide network of hubs. Each Irish hub is set to receive annual funding of €1.9m from both the EU and the Irish Government under the National Recovery and Resilience Facility.

These new hubs will work with local SMEs and public sector bodies to help them ‘go digital’, incorporating the benefits of digital technology in their operations, no matter what stage they are currently at.

The hubs will provide help with training, research and testing and advice on funding. They will be up and running by the end of this year.

Subject to the outcome of the next phase of national due diligence and evaluation, the successful Irish candidate hubs which are eligible to be co-funded under the Digital Europe Programme are:

CeADAR led by Ireland’s EI/IDA Technology Centre in Applied Data Analytics and Machine Intelligence (based in UCD) which will focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) transformation in SMEs and public-service organisations.

FactoryxChange (FxC), a consortium led by the EI/IDA Technology Centre Irish Manufacturing Research (IMR) in Mullingar, which will accelerate factories to become ‘Factories of the Future’ integrating ecological, digital, and societal solutions into their core business models.

Two digital innovation hubs from Ireland awarded ‘Seal of Excellence’

Through the evaluation process conducted by the European Commission a further two candidate hubs from Ireland have been deemed eligible to join the EU-wide network of Digital Innovation Hubs having been awarded the Commission’s ‘Seal of Excellence’ for the quality of their proposals as follows:

DATA2SUSTAIN, a consortium led by Atlantic Technological University, Sligo which will develop a comprehensive service programme to increase the transformation capacity and transformation speed of SMEs with a focus on circular economy, operations and sustainability areas.

ENTIRE, a consortium led by Tyndall National Institute, Cork which will help SMEs in the Agriculture, Energy and Transport sectors to become more competitive in their business or production processes using digital technologies such as sensors.

The Seal of Excellence is a quality label awarded by the Commission to projects which have been assessed in a call for proposals and are deemed to comply with the quality requirements of the call but could not be funded due to European Commission budgetary constraints. These projects may receive support from national sources of funding, subject to additional due diligence and evaluation at member state level.

It is intended that all of the above EDIHs, which will be either co-funded or fully funded by the Government under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, will now go through the remaining evaluation, approval and contract negotiation process before their formal establishment.

Welcoming the Commission’s announcement, the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar TD, said on June 17 in his announcement:

“How businesses interact with their customers, how citizens access public services and how we communicate and work with one another is all being transformed by digital technology. We need to make sure we are prepared for what will surely be an acceleration of this trend and that our SMEs especially, are assisted to make the most of new technology and stay ahead of the curve.

Alexion, AstraZeneca’s Rare Disease group, today announced a €65 million investment in new and enhanced capabilities across its sites in College Park, Blanchardstown and Monksland Industrial Park, Athlone.

The programme will centre on three investments: the installation of new drug substance production equipment and warehousing facilities to support ambient and cold storage at both sites in College Park and Athlone; and the construction of a Manufacturing Sciences & Technology Lab at College Park.

The equipment and warehouse facility in each site will expand Alexion’s drug substance production capabilities in Ireland. The Alexion Manufacturing Sciences & Technology Lab at College Park will facilitate the scaling up of biologics drug substance manufacturing in Ireland.

This development programme in Ireland follows last year’s announcement to build a next-generation active pharmaceutical ingredient facility at AstraZeneca’s College Park campus.

Marc Dunoyer, Chief Executive Officer, Alexion said “We are delighted to be further investing in our facilities in Ireland, an increasingly critical global hub for AstraZeneca operations, to support the continued growth of Alexion’s portfolio of medicines and meet our needs for expansion.

This investment will allow for new capabilities for AstraZeneca in Ireland and support our global ambition to accelerate the development and delivery of life-changing medicines for more people affected by rare diseases.”

Minister for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation, Robert Troy TD said, “I am delighted that Alexion has announced further investment in its Dublin and Athlone sites. This news further cements Ireland’s reputation as a global centre of excellence for life sciences.

I am particularly delighted to see continued investment in Athlone, and further endorses the midlands as an excellent place to invest, work and live.”

Magnet+, Ireland’s largest independent connectivity network, is proud to support LGBT Ireland this year for Pride month by sponsoring the LGBT Helpline for the month of June. LGBT Ireland has been a Magnet+ customer for seven years, over which they have built an extremely strong relationship.

To mark the significance of Pride, Magnet+ is sponsoring all LGBT Ireland connectivity and phone services free of charge, to ensure any and all savings made can be redeployed into continuing to provide these crucial services to members of the LGBTQI+ community nationwide.

LGBT Ireland is a national organisation representing the LGBTQI+ community in Ireland. It has a number of objectives, one of which includes providing support services such as the national LGBT Helpline and the ‘tele friending’ service (a weekly call for older, rurally based LGBTQI+ members) to the LGBTQI+ community in Ireland.

With strong connectivity being essential for these services to function successfully, Magnet+ has played a key role by providing technological solutions such as Magnet Talk to support the successful operation of the National LGBT Helpline Network.

The Magnet+ voice solutions and services provided to LGBT Ireland over the last seven years have enabled the organisation to not only sustain its services but has also allowed them to recruit and increase the number of volunteers working remotely nationwide to 65 this year, highest it’s ever been.

Magnet+ also assisted LGBT Ireland in its transition from traditional phone operations (i.e., picking up the receiver in an office) to using simple digital solutions (the Magnet+ Soft Phone or App) enabling the organisation to continue to expand its services and improve the digitisation of specific areas of the organisation.
