Cybersecurity has a skills shortage. The problem is so bad that many are referring to it as a crisis and are deeply pessimistic for the future. In a 2021 report by the Information Systems Security Association and Enterprise Strategy Group, the crisis was said to be continuing “on a downward, multi-year trend of bad to worse.”

Upskilling could resolve cybersecurity skills gap

The result has been that many companies face recruitment difficulties. An estimated 3.5 million vacancies went unfilled last year. (In Ireland, it’s estimated that 10,000 workers are needed to plug the cybersecurity gap.) And that means that businesses are struggling to maintain their security, and the staff they do have are forced to work under extreme pressure. It is difficult to conclude that traditional recruitment, hoping that the employment market can provide candidates with the right skills in place, will address the issue. As a result, more and more businesses are turning to upskilling.

Why is there a skills gap in cybersecurity?

Like so many challenges businesses face, the cybersecurity skills gap is a result of the Covid-19 pandemic exacerbating underlying trends.

Cybersecurity, by definition, is an evolving field. Every advance in technology, both hardware and software, can bring risks and challenges. We have, within just a few decades, moved on from a situation where security was largely physical: a business network was generally contained in a single location. With no external connection, it was simply a case of controlling access. For some, it might have been as simple as disabling drives and USB ports, or just having locks on the door. But since then, the field of cybersecurity has grown rapidly.

Email and the internet added more threats, creating new attack routes for networks. But the increase in working-from-home has created an exponential rise in the dangers. People now connect from homes that will probably have dozens of devices. The network that connects them to their work will also be connecting anything from their printer to their TV or fridge. And since most people are not cybersecurity professionals, each of those connections poses a risk.

Prior to the pandemic, while a growing, but still relatively small, trend of working from home might have been a headache, the pandemic transformed the landscape. Almost overnight everyone needed to be working from home, and cybersecurity became an urgent and real issue, even for those businesses that had never had to consider it before.

The problem was that there simply weren’t enough suitably qualified people to handle the size of the challenge. While many businesses had exceptional cybersecurity teams, they simply weren’t able to scale to meet the explosion in demand. Although professionals were able to make things work, they did so under unsustainable pressure.

The challenge of matching demand and supply

Although the intense pressure of the initial stages of the pandemic may have passed, cybersecurity professionals still face significant demands. With remote working now established as common practice, they must manage security in a wide range of uncontrolled environments. And this is against a backdrop of increased complexity with cloud solutions and multiple third-party connections. All of these add to the risk.

On the other side of the coin, those seeking to exploit vulnerabilities are constantly adapting their attacks.

Cybercrime is relatively cheap to commission and easy to carry out. With a low risk of detection and prosecution, cybercriminals can carry out attacks on an industrial scale. While most might fail, the rewards of a successful attack can be large. In a survey by PWC, nearly half of CEOs consider cyber risks a threat to their company’s growth, and nearly all expect the rate of attacks to increase.

Showcasing and celebrating global excellence in the commercialisation of research through the creation of spinoff companies (known also as spin-out companies), The Spinoff Prize from Nature Awards – part of Springer Nature – and in partnership with Merck is now open for applications.

This year, The Spinoff Prize will focus on companies founded on research in life sciences or physical sciences, both of which can include digital technology approaches, such as artificial intelligence, deep learning, neuromorphic computing and quantum computing.

Judges are looking for spin-out companies that translate original, high-quality scientific research into products and services that address market problems and are well-positioned to make a positive impact on society.

Prizes for the winners

Those shortlisted for the Prize will receive a profile in a special Nature supplement ahead of the final, with the shortlist then pitching to an expert panel in a slam at the 2023 Future Insight™ Days (curiousfutureinsight.org) before a winner is selected.

The winner will receive a cash prize of €30,000 to further develop their research into life or physical sciences.

Applicants are encouraged from anywhere in the world, from all genders and company positions, including companies in the early stages of establishment.

The finalists for the 2022 Business & Finance ESG Awards have been announced, with companies from all across the country vying for coveted titles. The winners will be revealed at a black-tie gala luncheon at 12noon on Thursday, June 30th, at The Round Room in the Mansion House, Dublin. Attracting more than 100 entries from 80+ companies nationwide, the ESG Awards aim to recognise and celebrate individuals and groups who are actively striving to address environmental, social and governance issues.

A unique website for job seekers, Jobs for Good, has just gone live and is perfectly equipped to help meet the challenge of getting more people into work in sustainable industries, with over 1,200 roles already live on the website.

Only jobs in companies that ‘do good’ are featured on the Jobs For Good website. Companies ‘For Good’ are those that make an impact on people and/or the planet and are run responsibly. The impact areas and companies range from areas like renewable energy, and food production companies to health and wellbeing solutions.

Purpose of Jobs For Good

The website was originally built in response to rising demand for jobs ‘for good’:

· Just last month, PWC’s latest report finds that 1 in 5 people are likely to change jobs this year, with 68% of respondents wanting a more fulfilling role.

· Over 70% of millennials would be more likely to choose an employer who has a strong environmental agenda.

Job sectors include IT, marketing, product, sales and admin roles. Companies are vetted for their ‘For Good’ credentials before being added to the website.

Park Place Technologies,

, the world’s largest global data centre and networking optimisation firm, has opened its long-awaited Support & Operations Centre at Blarney Business Park, Cork.

This project is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland.

“I am delighted to welcome the official opening of the new Park Place Technologies facility in Blarney, a very positive development for Cork and for the broader region” Taoiseach Micheál Martin said. “The opening of the new facility is testament to the Park Place Technologies continued commitment to Ireland and the growth and success of the company here. The Government will continue to work to support our thriving technology sector, and leading companies such as Park Place Technologies, as we build on the record 2.5 million people now in employment in Ireland and ensure continued opportunities in the future.”

Park Place’s new flagship facility consists of 24,500 square feet. The new facility 6km north of Cork’s city centre, will accommodate Park Place’s growth, allow employee expansion (projected to double by 2024), offer a landmark facility for clients, and provide a high-quality meeting space for prospects and channel partners.

Work positions are filled with local talent, and recruitment will continue for highly skilled engineering and technology positions. These include multiple roles including Support Centre Representatives, Advanced Engineering Technical Support and Buyer Planners. Customer support at the facility is available in all European languages.

Park Place has a long history of investment and philanthropy in Ireland and the wider EMEA region. Its STEM efforts have included partnerships with CoderDojo, a non-profit that teaches children fundamental aspects of computer coding; and a laptop donation programme, TechForGood, with I Wish, an Ireland-based non-profit committed to showcasing the power of STEM to teenage girls.

The impromptu protest at Bonn Climate Change Conference was led by youth activists from a coalition of groups including Plant-Based Treaty, YOUNGO (Youth Constituency of UNFCCC), CAN (Climate Action Network) and DCJ (Demand Climate Justice).

The action was staged at the Santiago de Chile conference room, inside the Bonn Climate Change Conference at 9.45 am, 10 June 2022, just before the arrival of Koronivia negotiators and lasted for the duration of the negotiations.

A Plant-Based Treaty position paper entitled, “Appetite for a Plant-Based Treaty. The IPCC repeatedly demonstrates that a vegan diet is an optimal diet to drastically reduce food-related emissions”, was delivered to every seat around the negotiating table urging delegates to include a Plant-Based Treaty in their plans.

Protest at Bonn Climate Change Conference

The protest was in direct response to the resistance from countries such as the United States, Brazil and the G77 for plant-based agroecology, sustainable diets, and a just transition to a plant-based food system to be included in the final Korinivia texts that will be presented at COP27 this autumn in Sharm El-Sheikh.

The Plant-Based Treaty campaigner, Yael Hanna says, “This is a do or die decade, particularly when it comes to the methane crisis. We need an immediate and rapid shift away from animal-based foods to plant-based foods in response to the climate emergency. The science presented by the IPCC is irrefutable, a vegan diet is an optimal diet for the planet and we need to negotiate a Plant-Based Treaty now.”

The Plant-Based Treaty climate campaigners were at the entrance of the conference with a food truck and inflatable cow where they distributed over 500 free vegan hotdogs to delegates in response to the lack of plant-based options offered by the venue. Activists have been asked to move the truck further from the entrance following reports of slow sales of predominantly animal-based foods inside the venue.

The Plant-Based Treaty position paper has been endorsed by over 100 groups and prominent individuals. It offers a roadmap for a fast and just transition to a plant-based food system this decade in response to the climate emergency.

Dr Peter Carter, IPCC expert reviewer and Director of the Climate Emergency Institute who endorsed the position paper, said, “The science is definite, global climate catastrophe cannot be averted without the elimination of meat and dairy in our diet, and that must happen fast. Ethically, all unnecessary methane sources have to be cut as fast and far as feasible. That means global veganization is now a survival imperative.”

Summary

The vegan diet is the optimal diet to fight climate change and could, according to the IPCC (2020) Special Report on Land Use, save almost 8 Gigatons Equivalent in greenhouse gas emissions plus more than double if we take into account the reforestation of lands currently used to farm animals.

Animal agriculture is responsible for 32% of human-caused methane. Recently, 112 countries signed a Global Methane Pledge to cut emissions by 30% by 2030. The Global Methane Pledge falls short of the 45% cuts needed; the states that have made pledges represent only about half of the human-caused emissions. In addition, the pledge is voluntary and unenforceable and is yet to offer a road map to meet targets.

The Declaration on Forests and Land Use launched at COP26 has been signed by 141 countries. Since the declaration, deforestation attributed to animal agriculture has continued unabated. Destruction of the Amazon in the first four months of 2022 hit records with 1,954 square km deforested, an increase of 69% compared to the same period of 2021, clearing an area more than double the size of New York City.

Two SciFest projects represented Ireland at the virtual Hong Kong Global Youth Science and Technology Bowl (GYSTB) 2022 at the weekend and claimed an overall Grand Prize – Silver Award and a first-place category award.

The Grand Award was claimed by Hari Pranavam from Saint Eunan’s College, Letterkenny for his project, Building an Automatic Weather Satellite Ground Station with Data Analytics Forecast. Hari will now have the opportunity to have his project published in the STEM Fellowship Journal (SFJ), an open-access, peer-reviewed journal published by Canadian Science Publishing.

Grace Ní Ifearnáin from Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí, Tralee won her first-place award for her project, Nature Takes on Nature: Investigating the Effects of Juglone on Japanese Knotweed. Grace recently represented Ireland and SciFest on the Broadcom MASTERS International programme in Atlanta, Georgia.

GYSTB is organised by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups. Judging took place online and the awards ceremony was broadcasted live globally on 12 June. The competition attracted 84 project entries from 16 countries or regions all competing for prizes.

Speaking about his award, Hari Pranavam said: “I’m absolutely delighted to receive a Grand Prize-Silver Award. It is such a great honour to get to compete on a global stage against people from all over the world. This is a fantastic reward for my work on the project and it is great to see it acknowledged by international experts. I would like to thank my parents and my teacher Mr Michael Harkin for their support and encouragement throughout. I’m also very grateful to SciFest who gave me the opportunity to compete in this international competition and achieve this award.”

Sheila Porter, SciFest Founder and CEO commented: “We are all immensely proud of the two SciFest students who represented Ireland at the Hong Kong Global Youth Science and Technology Bowl this year. Their great success in this prestigious international competition is testament, not only their ingenuity, commitment and hard work, but to the standard of Irish STEM education. We are delighted that the two students have had the opportunity to bring their projects to an international audience. Well done to both of them on their awards and we wish them every success for the future.”

SciFest is the largest, most inclusive STEM fair programme for second level students in Ireland. SciFest is free to enter and open to everyone across the island of Ireland, no matter their geographical location, school or scientific ability. The most important thing for SciFest is the participation of students and encouraging their interest in STEM in a fun and engaging way. The SciFest 2022 National Final will take place on 25 November 2022.

Tim Goodman on getting started in the jewellery business:

“I’ve got diamonds flying through my veins. I come from a family that founded a jewellery business in colonial Sydney in 1864, and my uncle was the last diamond merchant. He died about 15 years ago.

“I started out sweeping the floors and cleaning the lavatories in an auction business in Sydney, and I guess it took about 30 years, but I ended up owning and operating the largest art and jewellery auction enterprise in the Southern Hemisphere encompassing brands like Sotheby’s Australia, Bonhams and Goodman, and the license agreements with their head offices.

“The jewellery business was something that I was always focused on and I employed other people for art collections, cars, coins, stamps, music and other memorabilia. But I was always very closely associated with the jewellery business as that had been my heritage.”

Tim Goodman on driving earlier lessons learned into the Your Diamonds business:

“I’ve been involved with the launch and operation of numerous online businesses. Originally, with art, I had a couple of failures due to technology issues – failures that I learned a lot from. In recent years I realized that if I gathered a really good team around me, like I did back in the day when I had the auction businesses, then I would succeed.

“So, in the last 12 months we’ve raised some seed capital and we’ve built five really cool apps for the diamond industry, all around diamond pricing, benchmarks and measurements of market sentiment, basically providing information for the diamond industry.

“The thing that I learned in my last career was that to scale, you must surround yourself with very good people. You can’t be great at everything. We all know that. So, if you’re going to scale and launch into areas to take market share from your competitors, you must surround yourself with the very best.

“These people have been absolutely vital to get Your Diamonds to where it is today.”

Tim Goodman on cashflow finance as the problem to solve in the diamonds industry:

“There is a massive problem in the diamond industry that’s been evolving over some years: cash flow finance is very difficult to obtain.

“The traditional banks have reduced their exposure to the diamond industry from $16 billion to $8 billion per annum in recent years. The mid-supply chain operators, of which there are many thousands, are finding it very difficult to fund their cash flows.

“So, we have conceived a concept whereby the borrower, a diamond merchant, can use the very thing that the merchant is borrowing the money to acquire – a diamond – as collateral for a loan. It just makes common sense and it’s like a diamond mortgage.

“I struggled for about 18 months to work out how to do this, and then in October of 2021, I came across blockchain technology, and I totally immersed myself in it.

Enterprise Ireland has today formally launched the Gael Offshore Network at its second Offshore Wind Forum at Croke Park. The Gael Offshore Network has been established to bring together and grow expertise in Offshore Wind in Ireland. The cluster is made up of over 65 member companies.

Launched by Enterprise Ireland CEO, Leo Clancy, Gael Offshore Network member companies have expertise in areas including civil and marine engineering, geotechnical/geophysical capability, materials handling, environmental surveys, and data collection, along with innovative expertise in digital for offshore and associated cybersecurity. The formation of the Gael Offshore Network is in recognition of the economic opportunities available to Irish companies in the offshore wind sector, as well as the climate imperatives to move to renewable energy.

The Offshore Wind Forum

The Offshore Wind Forum sees over 200 attendees from the Irish and UK offshore wind sector gathering for the two-day event at Croke Park. The event provides Irish companies the opportunity to hear from and meet with international developers including Orsted, SSE Renewables, ESB, and RWE as well as with a range of established top-tier contractors with a large global footprint in offshore wind.

The two-day event will also feature Irish SMEs showcasing their innovative capabilities and industry experience through a series of elevator pitches. Gael Offshore Network member companies have already secured several high-value contracts, in the UK and other markets globally.

The UK is a key market for Irish companies on the offshore wind supply chain. The UK’s 2030 50-Gigawatt (GW) ambition represents a major opportunity for Irish companies. The opening day of the Enterprise Ireland hosted event will examine the opportunity that exists in the UK with high-level industry speakers taking a close look at the UK’s industry ambition, investment, project pipelines, and supply chain requirements.

The second day of the Offshore Wind Forum will focus on the Irish market with a keynote from Wind Energy Ireland. As domestic opportunities are beginning to emerge, attendees will receive updates on Ireland’s project timelines, locations, and procurement routes. The government’s Climate Action Plan outlines its ambition to produce 5GW of offshore wind energy by 2030.

Commenting on the event, Leo Clancy, CEO of Enterprise Ireland, said, “I am delighted to launch the Gael Offshore Network at Enterprise Ireland’s Offshore Wind Forum. There are significant growth opportunities for Irish companies in the offshore wind space. Irish companies have the innovative products and services to access the major opportunity that is evident in the UK but also at home in Ireland and further afield. The knowledge sharing and networking with global industry representatives at events such as this will help Irish companies to tap into current and future opportunities.”

To further position Irish companies to succeed in the UK market, Enterprise Ireland and the Gael Offshore Network will be hosting an Irish pavilion with some of its leading member companies at Global Offshore Wind 2022 in Manchester later this month.

IDA Ireland, together with Taoiseach Michéal Martin and Tánaiste Leo Varadkar welcomed the news that TikTok is to hire an additional 1,000 workers.

The news was shared with the Taoiseach and IDA Ireland CEO Martin Shanahan at a meeting with TikTok CEO Shouzi Chew and senior company leaders, at which both were advised of application’s strategy globally and Ireland’s role in it and updated on TikTok’s growth in Ireland and future expansion plans.

TikTok is to create a further 1,000 new jobs in Ireland

Following the meeting Taoiseach said: “Tik Tok’s latest expansion further embeds Ireland as an important hub for its European and Global operations, and is clear evidence of its commitment to this country.

The substantial number of additional, highly skilled jobs being created is testament to the strength of Ireland’s offering, which includes a strong talent base and collaborative ecosystem.

The Government remains dedicated to cultivating an environment in which businesses of all sizes can succeed and prosper here, both now and into the future.”

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said: “TikTok’s growth since coming to Ireland has been truly incredible. At the start of 2022, TikTok had over 2,000 employees in Ireland, and the addition of another 1,000 this year really underlines the company’s commitment to Ireland, our people and the environment we have worked hard to create here. There are more people employed in Ireland now than at any other point in our history. We don’t take it for granted and will continue to work hard to make companies like TikTok feel welcome here. I wish the team the very best with this latest expansion.”

IDA Ireland CEO Martin Shanahan said: “TikTok has expanded rapidly since establishing in Dublin in 2019. News of these additional 1,000 jobs, adding to its already substantial headcount, underscores the strategic importance of Ireland in TikTok’s global operations, with its Dublin site now base for a number of the company’s critical functions: its EMEA Trust and Safety Hub, European SMB operations, European Data Privacy and Data Protection team, its Transparency and Accountability Centre and, the most recently added, first regional Fusion Centre to be developed. That represents a substantial, continued investment by TikTok and is proof of the company’s continued commitment to Ireland.”
