Rain always seems to turn up when you least want it leaving your best-laid plans in tatters but rain is a vital resource. It feeds our rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. It nourishes our soil, enabling our crops to grow and our livestock to flourish. And it provides each of us with our required daily quota of water. Without it, we couldn’t survive.

In this three-part series Seán Mac, an tSíthigh uncovers how the story of rain is a global one and plays a pivotal role in cultures and religions around the world. From water shortages in Ireland to regenerating landscapes in India and Kenya, to sponge cities in China, we discover how rainfall impacts live across the globe.

Episodes of Báisteach

Episode one which broadcasts on the 6th of April unpacks our understanding of rain and the science of the drops of water that fall from our skies. Seán meets scientist Cormac Ó hAdhmaill at Fermanagh’s Marble Arch Caves to see the impact made by rainfall that fell thousands of years ago. Seán also travels to the United Arab Emirates to discover how countries with very little rainfall are using science to enhance their lot.

In the second episode of the series, Seán explores the impact rain has on cultures around the world. He visits a holy well in Ireland which contains water that fell as rain hundreds of years ago. He explores the cultural significance of rain in countries that don’t see a lot of rainfall, and he puts the Child of Prague to the test to keep the rain away for an Irish wedding!

In episode three we travel from Inis Oírr to Arizona to learn about how a lack of rainfall affects people’s everyday lives, and how one Scottish community puts their abundant rainfall to use to regenerate their isolated townland. Seán visits Skellig Michael to discover how the monks who built a home on this isolated rock in the ocean harvested rainwater to survive.

Yet within that familiarity, one can find the extraordinary, from the remarkable engineering feats of early-Christian monks on Sceilg Mhichíl in harvesting rainwater to the cutting-edge technology of cloud seeding in the Middle East where rain is created using planes and rockets.

Parts of this series look to the past, examining the intimate relationship our ancestors had with rain and seeing how their cultural wisdom can inform us as we face today’s climatic challenges. While filming in the United Arab Emirates, for example, I was struck by the ingenuity of society where huge cities have emerged from the desert, but I was also made aware of the fragility of such a potentially unsustainable existence. Our generation carries a burden of responsibility for future generations. We are temporary custodians of the climate of our planet I think this series offers food for thought as we face the challenges climate change brings with it.”

Workday, Inc., a leader in enterprise cloud applications for finance and human resources, today announced that it intends to create 1,000 new jobs over the next two years at its European headquarters in Dublin, increasing its Ireland-based workforce by approximately 60%. This investment is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland. In addition, to support its future growth and deepen its local community partnerships, Workday announced plans to construct its new European headquarters at Grangegorman, Dublin 7.

The news was shared at an event at Workday’s European Headquarters that was attended by Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD and Martin Shanahan, CEO, IDA Ireland, and Workday Co-CEO Chano Fernandez, Executive Vice President, Product and Technology, Sayan Chakraborty and Senior Vice President, Chris Byrne.

As part of its growth in the region, Workday will be hiring in roles across product development, engineering and data science, sales, services and user experience. Workday’s Dublin team has played a central role in the company’s global product development and innovation efforts since the company first opened its office in Ireland in 2008. Workday currently employs more than 1,700 people in Dublin, helping support the organisation’s more than 9,500 customers worldwide.

Workday’s new European headquarters situated at Grangegorman will be a highly-sustainable 550,000 square foot campus across approximately four acres in a Strategic Development Zone, adjacent to Technological University Dublin. The company has agreed to purchase the site from the Health Service Executive (HSE). The Grangegorman Development Agency (GDA) is the state developer for the Grangegorman site.

As design planning for the new European headquarters begins, Workday will become the anchor tenant of the Dockline Building in Dublin 1, helping augment its existing headquarters at Kings Building. In addition to having excellent transport links and facilities, the 80,000 square foot Dockline Building has approximately 200 bicycle spaces and is BER A3 energy rated.

Digital Business Ireland, the country’s leading representative body for digital, eCommerce and online businesses has welcomed the publication of the Circular Economy Bill while continuing to call for the need to foster the greater trust in refurbished products. In a recent submission to Government on the ‘Right to Repair’ EU legislative proposal, the organisation noted the need for Ireland to lead the charge in establishing a legal framework for second-hand goods – one which places the rights of consumers and the requirements of businesses at its core.

The Circular Economy Bill

The Circular Economy Bill, due to be debated in the Dail on Wednesday, provides a national framework for helping to achieve a circular economy and introduces a series of measures to support Ireland’s ambitions. The commencement of the Bill is indicative of Ireland’s desire to transition away from a linear economy and places this commitment on a statutory footing. The Bill includes the following provisions;

Legal targets for re-used and repaired products and materials

Establishment of a Circular Economy Fund

Provisions for a levy on certain single-use items

Ban on the supply of certain single-use items

In a recent submission to the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, Digital Business Ireland called on Government to work in tandem with its EU partners, in establishing a common market for refurbished products as part of the ‘Right to Repair’ EU legislative proposal. Such a framework should include definitions, quality standards and related contractual rights for consumers and businesses.

The representative body asserts that this action is necessary to foster the greater trust in refurbished products. As part of its submission, Digital Business Ireland also issued several recommendations to Government, on establishing an efficient Irish market for repairs and replacement parts. These include the implementation of stronger design rules, as well as the introduction of an obligation for brands to provide spare parts and/or technical documentation for independent sellers.

Speaking today, Chairperson of Digital Business Ireland, Ashley McDonnell, said: “We welcome the publication of the Circular Economy Bill and acknowledge the proactive steps taken by Government in establishing a clear roadmap for helping Ireland to transition away from a linear economy. The measures announced today solidify our nation’s sustainability ambitions and demonstrate our determination to build an economy where no product, part or package goes to waste unnecessarily”.

Elon Musk has taken a 9.2% stake in Twitter, according to a US securities filing.

He’s purchased a whopping 73,486,938 Twitter shares on the 14th March, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission. (SEC) Upon the announcement of that, Twitter shares rocketed 25% in pre-market trading.

The stake is worth ~$3Bn and makes him one of the largest shareholders, substantially higher than 2.25% owned by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey.

The reach and power of Elon on Twitter, sends shockwaves which literally increase or decrease the price of Cryptocurrencies, perhaps he now feels that by having such a high stake in Twitter he can really influence the direction of the company’s strategic direction, perhaps as an activist shareholder.

Last month Elon asked his Twitter followers whether they thought the social medial platform encouraged free speech.

“Free speech is essential to a functioning democracy. Do you believe Twitter rigorously adheres to this principle?”

He then asked: “Is a new platform needed?”

Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is announcing two new, free training initiatives that make it easy for individuals to get hands-on cloud computing skills training in a fun and engaging way. The first initiative is a new game-based role-playing experience, called AWS Cloud Quest: Cloud Practitioner, ideal for early-career or new-to-cloud adult learners. AWS Cloud Quest teaches foundational cloud computing concepts while learners zap drones and collect gems in their quest to solve challenges in a virtual city.

AWS also launched a new, improved version of AWS Educate, with added interactive content and removal of the .edu email address requirement, making the program even more accessible. Fast, a US based startup which provides checkout software have reportedly appointed Morgan Stanley to frantically find a buyer after failing to raise a new round of funding.

Fast raised >$120 million from investors including payments giant Stripe and tier one venture capital firm Index ventures, they have a headcount of ~500 and it’s been reported that they have >$10m monthly burn and after three years have only achieved and ARR of $600,000.

That does make you wonder what those 500 people actually do, but as I’ve seen over the years in many startups, commercial people are often an after thought and totally under appreciated in the importance they play.

There needs to be strategy, leadership, measurement and motivation for a startup to make revenue, it’s the lifeblood of growth. However, maybe raising so much money, too quickly makes some lose the sense of urgency and get comfortable, which is not the attitude for startups, it’s a race against time and everyone needs to be in sync, and rowing.

Sage advice to be one of the 10k startups which make revenue, but I guess not so sage if that means only being able to turn $120m into $50k MRR after 3 years. I would pay good money to see a monthly investor update, or sit as an observer in one of their board meetings, because I’ve seen founders handed their asses by investors over “only” having $20m revenue.

Anyway, I don’t like to kick people whilst they’re down, so whilst I understand the amazement we all share at the revelations from Fast, added to the almost David Brent-esque persona of Domm meaning it’s major meme material, I don’t want to dwell on it, their story is a feature in the product of venture capital.

In reality Fast is yet another addition in a long, long line of startups which completely contradict the thesis which venture capital investors use to turn away many potentially amazing and very qualified entrepreneurs every single day.

By all accounts, Fast appear to shortly be joining the likes of WeWork, Theranos et all in being inducted into the FUBAR hall of fame.. but maybe Domm can avoid joining the rapid fall from grace of the giant ego’s on parade in those examples, to double down on fundraising advice, he clearly is amazing at it, so why not write a best seller, create a netflix special or audition for Shark Tank!

Another observation for me, is that Fast (on paper) had a pretty decent team, such as their cofounder and COO Allison Barr Allen, who was an ex Uber employee. Perhaps this goes to show the simplistic, lemming-esque mentality of getting FOMO and blindly backing anything with a pulse from a sexy outlier like Uber, AirBnB et all actually isn’t always sound rationale, who knew!

I think I speak for all underdog and overlooked founders/operators by saying that unless VC’s start to have some consistency in process, anything they say regarding their desire to level the playing field of capital deployment is nothing more than fluffy PR. The token moves they make are clearly a box ticking exercise to gain show ponies they can use on demand.

Don’t get me wrong, I totally get that VC’s are under immense pressure to find outliers, so they can successfully raise new funds. Their job is far from easy, but there’s clearly blue ocean and a strong business case to back different people once in a while, doing so may just improve their typical 1/10 hit ratio, I strongly believe it would. Overlooked founders are cool with passes, but when the rationale we’re given is constantly contradicted with investments in other founders who obviously also don’t tick the box...

One in three tech professionals globally have said they would refuse to work for a Big Tech company as they’re perceived to offer less autonomy, collaboration and flexibility, new research has found.

Recognising a tech talent crunch, 81% of the technical professionals working for enterprise companies (500+ employees) polled even believe that their employer will struggle to find and retain talent over the next 12 months.

By contrast, the survey of global tech professionals conducted by NearForm, a leading remote-first software development company, found that only 43% of people working for smaller companies foresee the same difficulties when it comes to retaining and recruiting those in technical roles.

Employees are also finding that bigger is not always better when it comes to keeping pace with transformed ways of working and recalibrated employee priorities.

Over three quarters (78%) of professionals now value the learning and lifestyle components of their overall working experience – learning, culture, remote working, and flexible hours – over more tangible factors such as benefits and office location which have typically been packages offered by larger tech firms, businesses are being asked to offer a much more agile and holistic employee experience.

Sonya Hogan, Technical Director, NearForm commented: “With businesses of different sizes offering a unique experience, choosing where to work is largely down to personal preference, which may change over time.

“For instance, if a tech professional is looking to learn from others and build up their expertise, a large corporation is likely to be more appealing.

“84% of those surveyed said learning opportunities are a must so there is likely to be a pull towards large corporations that can offer robust training and development.

“Whereas if they are at a point in their career where they want the space to try new things, a small or medium-sized company is likely to be the best fit.”

“Larger tech players can follow suit here and make themselves more attractive, replicating some of the most appealing aspects of smaller businesses, such as offering more autonomy, opening up wider awareness into other areas of the business and being able to influence these where possible will give individuals the best of both worlds, putting them in a stronger position to attract and retain talent.”

Helene Haughney, VP of Delivery & Engineering at NearForm, added: “As we can see, bigger is not always better.

“While larger companies often have the allure of a big paycheque or company rewards, their smaller counterparts are now differentiating themselves in more meaningful ways, through company culture, greater access to clients and the C-suite, and less bureaucracy.
