DataSolutions, the specialist distributor of innovative IT sector and security solutions, announced the results of recent research which found that while the majority of tech companies have plans to either reduce their carbon emissions or become carbon neutral, a large proportion has not yet measured their footprint.

IT Sector Taking Steps To Be Greener

The study involved signatories of Technies Go Green – a collective of IT organisations committed to becoming more sustainable – found that 82% have firm plans to reduce their carbon emissions and 78% have plans to become carbon neutral.

39% of respondents said they will be carbon neutral by the end of 2022 and a further 43% expect to be by 2025. However, almost two thirds (65%) have not yet measured their carbon footprint.

Even though a large proportion have not yet measured their carbon footprint, the research did find that companies are taking steps to be greener. Eighty-eight per cent currently recycle the e-waste they produce and three quarters (75%) of IT leaders would consider buying refurbished IT equipment.

Some 48% of respondents have employee incentives to encourage them to reduce their commute and travel, and over half (51%) are using a green energy provider. Of the 49% that don’t currently use a green energy provider, 77% would consider changing to the same.

Furthermore, 59% of tech companies have an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy in place and 55% have a dedicated internal resource responsible for sustainability.

Techies Go Green

The findings come as Techies Go Green, co-established by DataSolutions, reaches 180 members. The movement, which will be celebrating its first anniversary in March, aims to increase its membership to 300 signatories by the end of 2022.

Michael O’Hara, Group Managing Director of DataSolutions and Co-Founder of Techies Go Green, said: “Sustainability is undoubtedly a crucial focus for IT leaders in 2022 and our research demonstrates its ever-growing importance in the world of business. But while organisations are starting to recognise and realise how crucial going green is, this appreciation needs to translate into consistent action.

“It is certainly positive to see companies review and reassess how they operate – for example, the use of green energy providers among Techies Go Green signatories increased 14% compared to six months previously. And it’s even more encouraging to see that dedicated resources are being put in place to progress sustainability efforts.

“Taking such practical steps is the key to turning the aim of carbon neutrality into a reality. However, companies need to look at the bigger picture and understand where they are starting from in order to identify the changes which will help to bring about widespread change. It is only through education and collaboration, enabled by communities like Techies Go Green, that we can hope to have a real and lasting impact on the global battle against climate change.”

Over twenty primary schools in 14 coastal counties around Ireland have a chance of winning the Ocean Champion Awards. The Marine Institute’s Explorers Education programme are delighted to announce that schools have been selected to complete Healthy Oceans projects.

Ocean Champion Awards

This Award is part of the Explorers School Project, which provides teachers and children with the tools necessary to develop a project within their school and community. The healthy ocean projects focus on supporting the primary school curriculum and creating positive actions to raise awareness and engagement about the ocean in the schools and their local communities.

“We are delighted with the number of schools that are taking part in the Explorers Healthy Ocean project module that is being delivered by the Explorers teams around Ireland. The schools working with the Explorers outreach centres will be learning about the ocean and how to take action to improve ocean health,” said Cushla Dromgool-Regan, Strategic Education and Communications Manager, Explorers Education Programme, Camden Education Trust.

The Explorers teams and schools will be working on the healthy ocean projects over the next term where they will be able to select one of three categories to focus on. The first category includes incorporating a marine theme into a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) project. The second category includes developing an Ocean Literacy Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) creative project which addresses an SDG. This may be based on SDG topics such as climate change, wellness, as well as life underwater. The final category is providing teachers and students with an opportunity to complete a project outdoors, ranging from creating outdoor sculptures to beach cleans.

“The Healthy Oceans projects furthers the Marine Institute’s goal to increase marine education and engagement, and also encourages schools to engage with their local community,” said Ms Patricia Orme, Director, Marine Institute. “Through these projects, we hope that the school children and their wider community will gain a greater appreciation of the importance of the ocean and an understanding of the significant impact of the ocean on our daily lives.”

This is the first year of the Ocean Champions Awards, and submissions will be judged by a team of marine and education experts. The winners will receive a Marine Institute Explorers Ocean Champion Award for their school. Winners will be announced around World Ocean Day on the 8th of June.

Average operational carbon emissions from Irish companies reporting on their environmental performance to CDP reduced by over a third last year, according to the environmental charity’s Annual Report 2021. Average Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions per responder totalled 32,577 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, compared to 50,483 in 2020, a decline of 36%.

The trend over the past 4 years shows that in general companies are making good progress from merely setting climate change targets, to implementing initiatives to reduce their environmental impact, although the decline in average emissions for 2021 was helped by some Covid-related reduced activity and the smaller size of some of the new responder companies.

Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from a company’s owned or controlled sources, Scope 2 are indirect emissions produced in the generation of energy purchased by reporting companies. Decarbonisation of the Irish electricity grid and improved fuel efficiency have played a significant role in this reduction.

CDP Report on Irish Companies

The report showed 55 Irish headquartered companies reporting under CDP’s rigorous evaluation procedure, an increase of 17%1, with well-known Irish listed companies like AIB Group, CRH, Kerry and Kingspan all in the Top 10 list of performers. 79% of Irish respondents achieved a B- grade or higher compared to 69% across Europe and 66% globally.

But while there is clearly an improved focus and attention on addressing climate change from Irish companies, CDP highlights that this issue is far from under control. In fact, the report highlights the need for companies to accelerate their decarbonisation efforts, in particular in their Scope 3 value chain emissions, if we are to avoid the catastrophic impacts of irreversible global warming.

In addition to providing evidence of decarbonisation initiatives, companies looking to improve their performance in their CDP ranking can also do so by making commitments to reduce carbon emissions through the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). 19 companies reporting to CDP Ireland have had their SBTi targets approved, with 25 more committed to setting them. SBTi sees companies set targets in line with the level of decarbonisation required to keep global temperature increase well below 2 degrees, consistent with the goals agreed at the 2015 Paris Climate Conference.

CDP Ireland Network

The CDP Ireland Network will continue to encourage non-responding companies to report and believes that non-disclosing companies will increasingly be at a competitive disadvantage. While their progress in Ireland can be seen as positive, they still have a mountain to climb. Only 1% of companies who submit climate change-related data globally to CDP have provided investors with a credible plan for the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Commenting on the publication of the list, Eoin Fahy, Chairman of the CDP Ireland Network said:

“It is great to see the CDP Ireland network going from strength to strength, with a 17% increase in Irish companies reporting in 2021. This is a minimum first step companies should take to demonstrate to their investors, their customers, and their staff that they are taking their responsibilities seriously. An increasing number of companies are putting in place scientifically verified Net Zero targets, with specific plans in place for how these will be achieved. Vague aspirations to go green are no longer good enough; it must be backed up by concrete proposals.”

The HBAR Foundation has announced the launch of its Sustainable Impact Fund (SIF) to globally grow the sustainability economy on Hedera.

The Foundation will partner with projects that drive outcomes within the scope of Environmental, Nature-based, and UN Sustainable Development Goal focused projects and facilitate systemic change for the planet.

The $100m+ Sustainable Impact Fund (SIF) is designed to strengthen accountability and transparency in ecological markets.

The SIF will provide grants to solutions that strive to solve fundamental problems in climate accounting for participants in the sustainability economy, including projects focusing on carbon emissions, offsets and removals, as well as other nature-based projects.

DOVU, building the trust layer for carbon offset integrity, beginning with a carbon marketplace, will be the first grantee from the fund, providing unrivalled carbon capture support using Hedera.

DOVU will provide granular traceability of carbon offsets using the open-source Guardian to make it easy to buy and trust the source of offsets.

“This fund and grant award is a clear indicator to anyone participating in carbon markets that Hedera is invested in using distributed ledgers or blockchains as a tool to change how the world works, just as we are,” said Matt Smithies, CTO, DOVU.

“It’s really significant for us that DOVU met the rigorous requirements to qualify for this grant. Our mission is to be the trust layer for carbon offset integrity.

“This can only be achieved by working closely with Hedera and The HBAR Foundation.”

Today, carbon accounting suffers from data quality issues, measurement and reporting inconsistencies, a lack of trust in participants, and a lack of standardisation — resulting in carbon credit double-spending and opacity in the sustainability markets.

The HBAR Foundation’s Sustainable Impact Fund intends to address this through funding, expert support, and awareness for Hedera based projects that measurably change how the world works in a strategic and attainable way.

“The Sustainable Impact Fund is the first of its type in the industry, setting out to solve critical problems in environmental markets around auditability, discoverability, and liquidity tied to real world assets.

Hedera is uniquely positioned to address these markets based on its technical capabilities and adoption in the enterprise, ” said Wes Geisenberger, VP, Sustainability & ESG, The HBAR Foundation.

“Our partnership with DOVU will make it even easier to buy and trust the source of carbon offsets, creating an ecosystem that sustains both the planet and ESG investor needs.”

Lobsters are truly amazing animals. They host a huge array of impressive attributes making them really well suited to their environments. The more we learn about these incredible animals the greater inspiration our society can take from natural design.

Also, these species play an important role in the ecosystem. By unlocking the mechanisms of their life and biology the greater equipped we as humans will be to help protect and conserve lobsters and our marine environments.

What are the most surprising findings in recent years?

One of the most impressive and surprising outcomes of lobster research is its use in space technology.yes, space! Lobsters have a unique method of capturing light through their eyes, reflecting lighting instead of refracting it like humans and other animals do.

Scientists and engineers have made use of the design of the lobster eye in satellites and x-ray telescopes. Who would’ve thought that lobsters living at the bottom of our oceans have helped us explore the outreaches of space.

Why is it important to release lobsters in the wild?

Lobsters are a commercially and environmentally important species, performing a vital role in human societies as well as their own underwater societies.

The popularity of eating lobster has risen over the past few decades so, it is more important than ever to ensure these species are protected.

Along the North East coast lobsters make up the vast majority of incomes for our fishing fleets, it is important to ensure the sustainability and longevity of the fishing industry whilst also ensuring that ecological balance is maintained.

By releasing juvenile lobsters, we can offset the number of lobsters caught by fishers, protecting the wild populations. By doing this, we can ensure lobsters live in our oceans for many generations to come.

Why is it so important for us to be funding lobster research right now?

Lobster populations are incredibly important. Lobsters perform a valuable ecological service within marine ecosystems and they are of huge social and economic importance to us.

The European lobster is a very vulnerable species, as its high value results in intense fishing pressure, which coupled with low recruitment success (low survival rates of offspring), makes them susceptible to stock collapse.

The marine conservation, education and research work that the National Lobster Hatchery undertakes is pioneering and proactive: as well as helping to conserve our native vulnerable lobster stocks it is developing techniques that will help prevent the collapse of the lobster fishery through restocking.

Such collapses have already happened in Scandinavia and parts of the Mediterranean where lobster stocks have already collapsed and failed to recover.

What are the most surprising findings in recent years?

The European Lobster is an incredibly fascinating species and the NLH’s research and observations into their unique lifecycle, morphology, genetics and habits, continue to unearth new and exciting discoveries all the time.

Our most recent research projects involve ageing lobsters, the genetic modelling of lobster populations and genetic sequencing for broodstock development, to name a few, as well as ongoing research and analysis to improve and assess the effectiveness of our lobster stock enhancement programme.

There are so many interesting facts and features of lobsters that never cease to amaze even our own team of ‘Lobster Nerds’. Here are some of our favourites:

1. Lobsters shed their shell (moult) to grow – they can also regrow limbs. 2. They evolved over 140 million years ago and can live for over 100 years. 3. After an intensive four-day commercialisation workshop, the winners of the annual BT Young Scientist Business Bootcamp have been announced.

Taha Fareed Farooqi (age 15), Hannah Walsh (age 17), Sophie Creedon (16), Harry O’Connor (age 16) and Claudine Mulihano (age 17) were named as the overall “Best Group” for the work on their project “Ahead of the Curve” and Isabelle Linehan (age 17) was presented with the title overall “Best Individual”.

The overall winning project was developed by Sophie Creedon and was presented at the virtual BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2022 in January.

The project investigates sports related injuries and seeks to design and develop wearable technology to better enable the measurement and recording of such head impacts.

The overall winning project was chosen after each group pitched their ideas to an expert panel of following a four-day programme including workshops on business, marketing, and commercialisation.

Congratulating the students, Shay Walsh, managing director, BT Ireland, said “The BT Business Bootcamp has been an integral part of the BT Young Scientist journey since its inception in 2010 and we were delighted to provide an exciting programme of activities for our participants in person for the first time in two years.

In the wake of the brutal attack on Ukraine’s democracy by the Russian Federation, beginning February 24, 2022, there has been a huge surge in online donations being sent to Ukrainian fundraising programs from around the world.

The amount of donations in crypto is notable, most likely the biggest crypto donations drive so far in history, and the tech-savviness of the Ukrainian government and their supporting teams has allowed for official crypto donation portals for the various currencies to be created almost immediately.

Crystal’s analysts are monitoring the cryptocurrency donation programs that have been launched in support of Ukraine – both by the government and other entities – noting that over $82 million in crypto donations have been collected so far as of March 10, 2022.

Compared with traditional finance donations – where, for example, UAH 6 billion+ so far had been transferred to a special account of Ukraine’s armed forces by March 2, 2022, we can see that tradfi fundraising still outways crypto fundraising by a long way.

According to their March 10 data, the majority of the crypto donations made so far (63%) have been targeted to support the Ukrainian army, with a lesser amount of donations (37%) having been made to humanitarian programs supporting the cause.

Within the crypto donation programs they looked at, they were also able to analyse the donations by currency, and as of March 10, 2022, more than half of the donations made so far have been in ETH (ether), with another large portion having been donated in BTC (bitcoin) and USDT (Tether).

Significant amounts have been donated in other currencies such as DOT (Polkadot), TRX (TRON), and BUSD (Binance USD).
