Logitech G815 LIGHTSYNC RGB mechanical keyboard, reviewed

Keyboards are seeing a healthy comeback, why do all your writing, typing and gaming on the default keyboard. Especially when keyboards like the G815 from Logitech can improve your gaming performance. You still have to be a good gamer of course, but all the features hard baked into this keyboard are intended to make using the keyboard a pleasure to use.

We set our younger testers loose on this one, and the verdict was an enthusiastic thumbs up. The spring-back bounciness of the keys was a big hit, and the additional power G-keys were a hit once they worked out which ones did which. The bells and whistles, aka the light shows that the keys can perform were also popular too. The pedant might argue that you don’t need your keyboard to do stuff like this, but if it can, then why not, and especially for the younger user, what’s not to like. The ergonomically thought through design features also make sense and can only help as we use our devices to do more and more.

What is/are SolSisters?

SolSisters is a unique, allegorical collection of NFTs representing a new era of sustainability within the NFT world. SolSisters themselves are mythical characters of the future, returning to Earth in hopes to save Mother Nature and all her creations.

We use the word, “allegorical” because the folklore inspired narrative behind the SolSisters, and their visual traits hold symbolic significance and were developed with the intent to reflect on real-life issues happening right now; specifically, the impacts of blockchain technology on the environment, and equality for women within the NFT space and beyond.

Just like how artists use exhibitions as tools to make political statements or take a stance on global issues, the SolSisters collection holds the same intrinsic value: they’re pieces of art that illustrate a moment in time.

In other words, the value of the SolSisters collection is not only indicated in hours spent on artistic production but also through the artistic choices that convey the current climate – both thermal and political – of the world.

This whole project is really driven by our mission to advocate for energy-efficient solutions in the NFT space, and to build a community of people who are passionate, not only about improving the environment but also empowering women in this environment.

When was it created & how will it address sustainability within the NFT world?

The SolSisters collection was minted on October 15, however, our team began discussions around the project in the summertime as the popularity of Solana began to increase.

Solana, being a PoS blockchain, is not only exceedingly fast, with much lower gas fees, but it’s significantly better for the environment.

The enormous energy consumption, and super high gas fees that are standard for PoW blockchains, like bitcoin and ethereum, are seriously alarming and dangerous to the environment.

The growing awareness of the climate crisis has led people all over the globe to embrace more sustainably-based values, attitudes, and preferences when purchasing products, and making lifestyle choices in total.

We began to wonder why this mindset hasn’t infiltrated the crypto/NFT space — whether it’s selecting smarter transportation, or the food you pick up from the grocery store, people all over the world are now “voting with their wallets,” and the crypto/NFT industry should be no different — especially as an industry that could potentially cause more harm than most.

We hope the SolSisters narrative will not only spread awareness and encourage people to consider the environmental dangers blockchain imposes, but to opt for the simple, everyday choices, like using Solana, in taking steps to improve the future of the NFT space.

To dig into this further how will help wider environmental challenges?

The SolSisters project is mission based and community driven. Since starting on this journey, and still to this day, we are cultivating a growing community of like-minded individuals, driven by the force of good, and equality.

We have a quarterly “Vote For Change” initiative, in which we are able to work with our community to collectively decide on where money is donated to — we want to establish an inclusive, equal, and safe space for everyone’s voice to be heard, and feel involved in moving all charitable activities forward.

In parallel with our Vote For Change Initiative, we set up the Sisterhood Fund for Change in order to maintain charitable efforts far beyond our initial 10% donation to Women’s Earth Alliance.

The Sisterhood Fund is an allocation of secondary transaction fees to be donated to a variety of relevant charitable causes and organizations, all decided on by the SolSisters community together.

The “Roam like at Home” scheme will be renewed for another ten years, under plans informally agreed between MEPs and the Slovenian Presidency of the Council, on Thursday.

Under the agreement, a follow-up to the 2017 elimination of roaming surcharges, consumers will continue to be able to use their mobile phones when travelling abroad in the EU with no additional fees on top of what they already pay at home.

In addition, they would be entitled to the same quality and speed of mobile connection abroad as at home. Roaming providers will be obliged to offer the same roaming quality as those offered domestically, if the same conditions are available on the network in the visiting country. To this aim, MEPs secured a provision to prohibit practices that reduce the quality of roaming services (e.g. by switching the connection from 4G to 3G).

Free access to emergency services

Travellers will have access to emergency services without any additional charge – whether by call or text message, including the transmission of caller location information. Operators would also have to provide information about the European emergency number 112, it was agreed. People with disabilities will be able to access emergency services without additional charges.

Call for ending surcharges for intra-EU calls

During negotiations, MEPs pushed to end surcharges for intra-EU calls (e.g. when calling from Belgium to Italy), as consumers are still confused about the difference between roaming calls and intra-EU calls. Intra-EU calls are currently capped at 19 cents per minute. The agreement provides for the Commission to look into the situation and assess whether further reduction of the caps are necessary.

Wholesale roaming charges – the price operators charge each other when their customers use other networks when roaming the EU – will be capped at €2 per Gigabyte (Gb) from 2022 progressively down to €1 in 2027. If consumers exceed their contract limits when roaming, any additional charges can not be higher than the wholesale roaming caps.

Lead MEP Angelika Winzig (EPP, AT) said: “We were able to reach an agreement that is progressive and leads to even better quality and service for European citizens. We are creating a fairer roaming market, especially focusing on smaller operators by significantly cutting the wholesale caps. As European Parliament chief negotiator, it was my goal to improve the situation significantly for consumers”, she said.

“We succeeded in ensuring a new regulation that delivers exactly that, while also providing enough flexibility to react to new developments in the telecom and technological sectors. This way we make sure that the EU constantly has its finger on the pulse. Tonight’s agreement is one step closer to a true Digital Single Market and I am happy that we could add a new chapter to this European success story”, she concluded.

Next Steps

The informal agreement will now have to be formally endorsed by Parliament and Council to come into force. The Industry, Research and Energy Committee will vote on the text in a forthcoming meeting.

The Roaming Regulation established the ‘Roam-Like-At-Home‘ (RLAH) rule that mandated the end of retail roaming surcharges in the EU as of 15 June 2017. The regulation is currently in force until 30 June 2022. Five years after the regulation was adopted in 2015, the Commission reviewed the scheme to assess its effects and the need to extend it, as explained in its impact assessment.

Flipdish, a digital ordering platform, has welcomed the results of Deloitte’s Fast 50 Awards, in which the company takes the second spot in this year’s listing, up one place on last year’s awards. The Fast 50 is one of Ireland’s foremost technology award programmes. Now in its 22nd year, it ranks companies based on their growth and revenue over the last four years and celebrates innovation and entrepreneurship in Ireland’s indigenous technology sector.

This year’s Fast 50 awards showcases the companies that not only survived the pandemic but thrived during the turbulent year that has had significant impact on companies across all sectors. Flipdish’s mission has always been to help food business owners take control of their business and during the pandemic their priority was to enable business owners to survive and thrive with Flipdish technology.

Through Flipdish’s offering of QR Code Order & Pay technology and Kiosks, food business owners were able to stay in line with government guidelines while also catering for their customers’ needs. This is already on top of Flipdish’s other offerings of online ordering through branded websites and apps which continue to be used by food businesses across Ireland, Europe and the US.

Despite a turbulent year, Flipdish has certainly thrived and continues to do so through the pandemic. Starting 2021 with a €40 million fundraise in February, while the company’s revenue increased 10x since its funding round in 2018. During 2021 Flipdish also made some notable partnerships, one being with the iconic Bewleys cafe on Grafton Street in Dublin. As well as this, Flipdish has seen some significant growth this year particularly in the US market which has grown 10x and the UK market that has grown 4x. Additionally Flipdish has been hiring at pace and today has more than 300 employees.

The company was also awarded the inaugural Scale Up award. This award is for a company that has demonstrated an impressive ability to scale up and expand overseas over the last four years.

Speaking on the results today, CEO and co-founder Conor McCarthy said ‘Flipdish are once again thrilled to be listed as one of Deloitte’s Fast 50 companies. We are also delighted to move from number three to number two which only reconfirms the continued acceptance the hospitality sector has when it comes to new technology’

YouTube has launched its first ‘From Opportunity to Impact’ report in Ireland. Developed in partnership with Oxford Economics the report assesses the economic, societal, and cultural benefits of the world’s most popular video hosting website in Ireland.

Around one billion hours of YouTube videos are watched every day across the world. With a low bar to entry, in terms of cost, and access to a global fanbase, YouTube offers Irish creators the opportunity to build a business on the platform.

The report, commissioned by YouTube, found that the platform’s creative ecosystem supported the equivalent of 1,600 full-time jobs in Ireland in 2020. Oxford Economics also estimated that the total contribution of YouTube’s creative ecosystem to Ireland’s GDP was €30 million in 2020.

As well as measuring the economic impact, the report outlined the value of YouTube as a place to learn, as an amplifier of diverse voices and creative entrepreneurs and, as a source of relevant information during the Covid-19 pandemic.

A place to learn

Every day YouTube empowers people of all ages across Ireland to develop their personal and professional skills. It has become an unrivalled learning repository with 91% of Irish users accessing the platform to gather information and knowledge. Users turn to YouTube to learn new hobbies and solve practical problems with 68% regularly watching ‘how to’ and DIY videos for example.

Discerning this desire for educational content led Irish design engineer Brian McManus to leave his job in 2016 to pursue a career as a YouTube creator. Five years later, his two channels Real Engineering and Real Science have 3.1 million and 518,000 subscribers respectively. Brian employs four people full time and regularly hires freelancers who work as editors, animators, and writers in his production team.

Commenting on the report, Brian McManus said,

“I could see that people watched a lot of educational content on YouTube, but I could not find anyone creating engineering videos that represented how important the career was to the world. I began to teach myself animation and video editing in my spare time, and when I felt I was ready, I quit my job to start the channel.

“The channel grew rather quickly and within 6 months I had replaced my income. I’m now doing something I love and I’m also employing a vastly talented production team as well as hiring many more freelancers – and all based from the West of Ireland.”

YouTube provides a vehicle for Irish creators, like Melanie Murphy to find opportunities and economic success by sharing content with audiences, locally and internationally. Melanie’s videos on health, culture, and motherhood have been viewed more than 71 million times and she has earned a full time income for the past seven years from her YouTube presence. While Melanie describes herself as a ‘one man band’ she has, in the past, hired staff like camera crews to help in the development of content for her channel – further demonstrating the knock-on economic impact of the YouTube creator community.

Commenting on the report, Pedro Pina, Head of YouTube EMEA, said,

“It is inspiring to see the many ways YouTube is touching the lives of Irish people, including those of Brian and Melanie. As the only open platform that allows people to both share their voice and the revenue derived from their work, we’re bringing to an entire new generation of creative entrepreneurs — regardless who they are or where they come from — the chance to build thriving businesses on YouTube.”

Ireland’s creators have cultivated a diverse audience with over 95% of time watched on content produced by channels in Ireland coming from international users. The global success of Ireland’s creators represents a real export opportunity with the potential to further increase the already significant number of jobs as well as the sizeable contribution to Ireland’s GDP – generated by the creator ecosystem here.

Ambitious female entrepreneurs who are determined to develop their businesses have just one week left to apply for the latest cycle of Going for Growth, the award-winning business development programme. The deadline for applications is next Thursday, December 16th.

Going for Growth is a six-month, part-time programme, supported by Enterprise Ireland and KPMG, which assists ambitious female entrepreneurs to achieve their growth aspirations.

This is the 14th cycle of Going for Growth which is seeking applications from female entrepreneurs – across all sectors – who are strongly focused on growth.

Up to 60 places will be available for the new cycle, which will run from January to June 2022 and there is no charge for those selected.

Anyone interested is encouraged to register on the website goingforgrowth.com and a link to the application form will be sent to them.

Ideally, businesses applying should be well established. In exceptional cases, businesses at an earlier stage will be considered if they are generating sales, and it is felt that the business is highly innovative, plans to have export customers and the entrepreneur has significant growth ambitions.

Those selected for the Going for Growth initiative join interactive round table sessions led by Lead Entrepreneurs. The Lead Entrepreneurs are successful business women with personal experience of growing a business.

These high-profile business leaders volunteer their time to encourage participants to set and achieve personalised goals and milestones to address the opportunities and challenges they face in driving growth in their businesses.

Some of this year’s Lead Entrepreneurs include five previous Going for Growth participants: Dr. Anne Cusack, formerly Critical Healthcare; Chupi Sweetman-Durney, Chupi; Gillian O’Dowd, Azon Recruitment Group, Jeananne O’Brien, Artizan Food Co. and Oonagh O’Hagan, Meaghers Pharmacy Group.

Áine Denn, co-founder and formerly of Altify, and Breege O’Donoghue, formally of Primark, will lead Continuing the Momentum round tables. This is a further development programme for former participants of Going for Growth.
