Vodafone Ireland is offering final year college students and recent graduates the chance to choose their path with the launch of its 2022 Graduate Programme. Now in its 12th year, the graduate programme will see 40 future leaders develop their skills and kick start their careers with the guidance and support offered by Vodafone Ireland.

For the first time ever, graduates will be able to choose from seven different streams of the business (Data, Communications & Marketing, Technology, Corporate Security & Legal, Finance, Digital, and Business Management) across the 18-month rotational programme, offering a wealth of great opportunities and experiences so they can build their network and develop existing and new skills.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on youth unemployment which stands 14% lower than pre-pandemic levels. Vodafone Ireland has enhanced the graduate programme to ensure it is suitable for those from a large variety of disciplines and diverse backgrounds. Over the last four years alone, Vodafone has offered over 1,000 young people the opportunity to be a part of the Vodafone Ireland team through internships, youth experience days and the graduate programme.

All graduate intakes reflect a 50:50 gender representation. Nearly a third of current graduates represent a variety of different experiences, which means 30% of graduates on this year’s programme identify as coming from typically underrepresented minority backgrounds, including people with disabilities and people from racial and ethnic minorities. 63% of early-career LGBT+ employees said Vodafone’s inclusive culture helped them to be themselves at work.

As part of the Graduate Programme, Vodafone will offer a 60:40 hybrid working model, where all employees can spend 60% of their time working remotely and can also avail of Vodafone’s Gigabit Hubs around the country. Almost half (49%) of Vodafone’s interns and graduates in 2021 are from areas outside of Dublin, compared with 39% the previous year.

The Coach Tourism and Transport Council (CTTC), Ireland’s largest representative body for coach touring companies, and private bus operators have welcomed the Budget 2022 announcement and said the investment in tourism recovery will help revive the crippled coach tourism sector in 2022.

The CTTC said Government has rightly adopted a strategic approach to the allocation of funding. The coach tourism sector attracts two million international tourists annually, amounting to almost one-quarter of Ireland’s annual tourist numbers (pre-pandemic).

In its pre-Budget 2022 submission, the representative body had urged the Government to recognise the crucial economic and social value of the sector and highlighted that now was the opportune time to leverage the strategic value of the industry. It warned that this would only be possible with increased Government support, as the sector remained hugely damaged as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In its submission to the Government, the CTTC requested among other measures a full resumption of the Business Continuity Scheme, with increased funding specifically allocated to coach tourism. The representative body also recommended an extension of the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS) until turnover returned to at least 75% of its pre-Covid levels.

In Tuesday’s Budget, Government announced €50 million in Business Continuity Scheme funding support for the tourism sector with €39 million allocated for marketing Ireland abroad. The EWSS has also been extended until April of 2022 and the hospitality VAT rate will be retained at 9% until the end of August 2022.

The CTTC has also welcomed the €90 million aviation support package, which will help to rebuild international connectivity.

Given that the private coach sector currently supports 11,000 jobs and contributes more than €600 million annually to the Irish economy, it was imperative that any threats to its survival were directly addressed as part of Budget 2022.

Speaking today, Chairman of the CTTC, John Halpenny said: “It is a relief to learn that the Government acknowledges the strategic importance of the private coach sector and has taken on board the recommendations outlined in our pre-Budget submission. The industry has suffered enormously over the last eighteen months and while further challenges lie ahead, the support announced today will come as some comfort to many.

“The resumption of the Business Continuity Scheme funding is welcome news but an allocation must be ring-fenced specifically for coach tourism to acknowledge the crucial role our members play in transporting international visitors across the regions and to the most peripheral parts of this island. Without their direct involvement in tourism many regional retailers, hospitality outlets, visitor centres and jobs would be in jeopardy.

“I would strongly urge that dispersion of these funds happens as quickly as possible in order to ensure the survival of an industry that supports thousands of businesses and jobs across the country. Our members are keen to actively participate in the tourism recovery and we stand ready to facilitate the transportation of visitors the length and breadth of the country.”

Like some of you, we became acquainted with the name of Paul Stamets, via the new Netflix reboot of Star Trek, where the Chief Science Officer was given this name, specifically in homage to this writer who wrote Mycelium Running. In Star Trek, Stamets creates the mycelium drive, so, doing a bit of digging it lead to this book, which we thought would be interesting to read and review. The original Paul Stamets is a bit of a legend in the mushroom world, you can buy the book Mycelium Running here.

We also came across the author of this book in the great book by Merlin Sheldrake ‘Entangled Life’ which we reviewed last autumn, where Stamet’s influence still looms strongly fifteen years after this book was published. In many ways this is definitely a book that calls for a second edition, as you wonder how much has evolved and changed since this edition was written.

Stamets outlines some potentially ground breaking use cases for fungi to deal with and breakdown extremely toxic materials, invariably created by mankind, but with no good way, yet, to dispose of them. This is only one of the interesting lines of thought that Stamets explores in this book, but certainly potentially one of the most positive. The book is heavily illustrated, which works well, breaks up the text, and really helps to illustrate the ideas and specific species he is talking about.

The more you read and learn about fungi, the more they are fascinating, amazing, and also challenging to our concepts of plants, animals, and what lies in between. Stamets is clearly a deep enthusiast and thinker in this area, but the book remains accessible and, for us at least, understandable. It is not certain that a mycelium drive will ever come to be, but you can see why the creators of the Star Trek series were inspired to name their character after him.

Too Good To Go is calling on all Dubliners to join the movement. Too Good To Go is the world’s largest B2C marketplace for surplus food, and empowers the public and local businesses to fight food waste by offering ‘Surprise Bags’ of surplus food at the end of the day to stop it from going to waste.

Cybersecurity has remained a priority for enterprises within varying sectors, due to the ever-growing reliance on technology. Countless data breaches and cyberattacks are living proof that cybercriminals are becoming more sophisticated with their tactics. This, combined with many organisations using digital platforms more than ever before, means it has never been more important to address security measures.

In fact, research has shown that 79 per cent of organisations were hurt by their lack of cyber preparedness in 2020, with 13 per cent of businesses not having any email security in place at all. Approaching the latter half of 2021, it will be interesting to see which areas of society have been impacted and why.

The rise in agile working

When remote working measures were implemented last year, the UK saw around five million people working from home in the United Kingdom. With this, cyber risks significantly increased, due to many individuals utilising non-standard email or new, instant, and unfamiliar messaging systems. In addition, many used new equipment, which failed to properly filter out emails carrying threats.

Some employees were also tempted to use public Wi-Fi, as lockdown restrictions began to ease, but flexible working was still in place. In cases such as these, not using a virtual private network (VPN) can leave members of staff exposed to what is known as ‘man in the middle attacks,’ which pose as fake Wi-Fi hotspots and can gain access to the device.

Protecting patient data

Within the healthcare sector, there have been numerous conversations around the safety of patient data. Although accessing medical records online has the potential to give patients more control over their health and care data, it has raised some concerns from a security perspective.

The move to an online app to manage this does seem like a natural progression, but there is a difference between having computerised records within the healthcare IT infrastructure and having those records reside on a public facing server. Having records in-house limits the range and type of access – it’s far more difficult for remote hackers. There are techniques that healthcare organisations can use to reduce the risk of data breaches, such as an ‘opt in’ option, so patients can decide whether their medical information is moved to a public facing server.

It is almost impossible to completely secure data until the healthcare sector achieves correct implementations of ‘homomorphic encryption,’ which is a form of encryption that makes it possible to analyse encrypted data without it being decrypted first. Ultimately, the industry must maintain effective security protocols and policies for years to come, by increasing the amount of IT security staff and consistently training hospital employees in cyber skills.

Disturbance in banking

Currently, the biggest concern within essentially every industry is ransomware. However, recent research has shown that the banking industry has been disproportionately affected, experiencing a 1,318 per cent year-on-year increase in ransomware attacks in the first half of 2021.

Once a device is infected, it typically encrypts all documents and any attached network drives or backups and the only solution to most of these is to pay the scammers. At this moment in time, it is the deadliest scam and will continue to play a huge role throughout society due to the rise in cryptocurrency, which allows scammers to remain anonymous.

There are usually three major attack vectors that financial organisations should consider. Firstly, it is important to address the personal security of individual members accessing their accounts. The second is the security of tools, which are needed to access these accounts, and the third is the institution internal team, who access back-end servers and the internal network. A Truly Immersive Gaming ...

Representatives of Electric Vehicle Drivers’ Associations from a range of European countries will be heading to the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow to support the call for much faster transport decarbonisation globally fuelled by renewable energy.

EV drivers will be calling for all new cars and light-duty vans sold in the 28 countries (44 EV drivers’ associations) represented in the Global EV Drivers’ Alliance (GEVA) to have a plug by 2030, and to be fully zero-emission by 2035 at the latest. A rapid shift to zero-emission electric transport is currently being achieved in many countries and can be accelerated through supportive policies.

Climate change is already having a devastating impact on our planet, causing glaciers to melt, sea levels to rise, harsher droughts and heatwaves, and stronger tropical cyclones and hurricanes. This has led to significant loss of life, impacts on human health and environmental destruction which will only get worse in the coming years.

Transportation accounts for 24% of direct CO2 emissions from fuel combustion globally, of which road vehicles account for nearly 75%. GEVA is calling for action now to shift from vehicles burning fossil fuels to vehicles running on clean, renewable electricity. This has never been more urgent than it is today.

To take this message to COP26, EV drivers from Europe and the UK will be participating in the ‘Electric Road to COP26’, starting their journey in England by charging up with 100% renewable electricity at the GRIDSERVE Electric Forecourt in Essex.

They will then be hosted by myenergi in Grimsby where they will be able to see some of the latest EV charging and zero-carbon home energy solutions. The route will take in the site where construction is currently starting at the Britishvolt EV battery gigafactory in Northumberland, before experiencing Scottish EV charging at Forth Valley College in Falkirk – ending up in Glasgow itself at the Arnold Clark Innovation Centre.

The EV drivers will then head to COP26 in Glasgow in order to:

Support the call for much faster transport decarbonisation globally

Increase the public’s awareness of the benefits of EVs for the environment and health, reducing carbon emissions and helping to improve air quality

Promote the voice of EV driver associations globally working with GEVA

The Electric Road to COP26 is being organised by EVA England, EVA Scotland, GEVA and Local EV Groups (NEXUS). Octopus Electric Vehicles is providing EVs for driving opportunities at some of the locations on the route. Planet Mark’s Zero Carbon Tour Bus will join the Electric Road in Glasgow.

Joel Levin, Global EV Alliance (GEVA) Chair, comments: “A shift to electric transport is essential to quickly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce dangerous climate change, improve local air quality and people’s health in cities around the world. Nest Cam with floodlight (wired) reviewed

This is Nest’s first floodlight camera and it makes sense for them to supply this option. The fact that it is wired will require some thought about whether it will be the right option for you. Naturally battery operated for outside can be a pain if you have to replace batteries in the middle of winter, during a howling storm.

As often it tends to be the time when batteries fail on an outdoors device. Wired therefore is a good option as an alternative, though you will need to think through if you have a suitable electricity source, or if you have to open up a hole in the wall to bring it through, which will not work for all locations.

You will have to sign up for Nest Aware too for it to deliver all the functionality on offer, which is another factor to consider in the ‘optional – but necessary’ aspect to this device. You will also need the Google Home App, to be able to access and adjust the options and to review footage. The data is encrypted as it travels from the device to the cloud which is good, though it might also make sense to keep an eye out for any potential stories about breaches or exploits.

The footage is quite good, and does have the fun, cool features of being able to distinguish between different types of moving bodies, animals, humans, etc. The light is bright and shines widely and effectively. Some may feel that the cost is at the upper end of the range for similar products.

Perhaps Google’s thinking is that if you have already bought previous Nest related products, then you are already invested in the product range, and therefore less likely to mix and match with other products by competitors. If you can live with the higher price then this is a good product, solid, well made, with a good brightness for the area you want to illuminate.
