Pixel Buds A-Series reviewed

Members of our office were excited to see these arrive, and there was even some competition to open them up. They promptly disappeared and were given a good road testing. First up, out of the box, they are charged and ready to go. This is not actually a given for all types of ear buds coming in to us. It is never a deal breaker, but it certainly makes life easier when the gear is all charged and lined up to be used. Positive marks for the Pixel Buds in this regard.

Next up the usability scored pretty well, it, as you might expect, works well with it’s own Google Pixel phone series, but it also plays well with other Android phones also. There are also three sizes of ear bud settings too, for varying sizes of ears, which is smart and logical, as not all ears are the same size. There is also a small clip / hook for the upper part of your ear to help ensure it remains in your ear. Our most enthusiastic tester said at times they even forgot it was there, and then tried running, playing football and even cartwheels. None of these activities shook the ear buds lose, so again it scored well in this regard.

In terms of battery life, it definitely lasts longer than the previous iteration, so this seems like a win too. Overall this release seems like it could be a successful one.

European ministers responsible for media and information society will meet online on 10 and 11 June to discuss the ways to address the challenges to freedom of expression brought by massive digitalisation in the media and information environment – including the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) – and by the serious backsliding in the safety of journalists.

Jointly organised by the Council of Europe and the Cypriot government under the theme “Artificial Intelligence-Intelligent Politics: Challenges and opportunities for media and democracy”, the conference aims to secure the political engagement of the Council of Europe and its 47 member states to a number of priority actions and to map the future work of the organisation in the fields of media and information society.

New digital technologies driven by AI have created new opportunities for the exercise of freedom of expression, allowing access to vast amounts of information but also generating risks of targeted persuasion and manipulation. Search engines and social media platforms have caused a structural shift in the information environment putting at risk the business model of traditional media and favouring the dissemination of information based on virality rather than quality, also creating major risks for the spread of disinformation. At the same time, journalists face increasing obstacles to do their work safely and are often the target of physical attacks and intimidation.

AI Products Can Promote Disinformation

Aiming to address these challenges, the ministers are expected to adopt a political declaration and four resolutions on issues such as the impact of AI products and processes on freedom of expression and the possibility of introducing regulation to ensure more transparency in the dissemination of news to combat disinformation – notably during electoral periods.

Other issues to be considered are the need for measures to improve the safety of journalists, for example, through dedicated national action plans for the protection of journalists and other media actors, and ways to reinforce the resilience of freedom of expression protection safeguards in member states in times of crisis, such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

Representatives from civil society, media, and freedom of expression experts will also participate in the conference. In a “world-café” format, ministers will have to opportunity to receive first-hand accounts from local and community media representatives on projects aimed at improving the access of marginalised communities to media during the pandemic, and from media freedom experts on best practices to enhance the protection of journalists.

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, Council of Europe’s Secretary General Marija Pejcinovic, and Foreign Affairs Minister of Hungary Péter Szijjártó, representing the Hungarian Presidency of the Committee of Ministers, will speak at the opening. Keynote speakers include Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatovi? and European Commission Vice-President Vera Jourová.

Amal Clooney, Deputy Chair of the High Panel of Legal Experts on Media Freedom, and David Kaye, Independent Board Chair of the Global Network Initiative, will make special interventions.

The conference will be streamed live on the conference website except for a ministerial roundtable for the discussion and adoption of the conference declaration and resolutions.

An online press conference is scheduled around 1 p.m. on 11 June. A request for accreditation should be made before noon Wednesday 9 June.

Green hydrogen will prove to be a key link between growing and sustainable renewable electricity generation and the hard to decarbonise industrial sectors. Hydrogen is a versatile energy vector that can circumnavigate many decarbonisation obstacles but in doing so, it has many hurdles it must navigate in order to become universally accepted and utilised to its maximum potential.

Hydrogen is a ubiquitous energy vector that can be utilised in diverse applications beyond ‘traditional’ applications including those that require a high energy density, ranging from serving as a feedstock for chemical reactions, producing a range of synthetic fuels and feedstocks.

Importantly hydrogen’s greatest advantage is that it can be electricity grid independent, thereby allowing new energy distribution networks to be deployed and enabling greater renewable energy integration.

It is this energy system advantage that delivers enhanced system flexibility and storage, which support further deployment of variable renewable energy (VRE); contribution to energy security; reduced air pollution; and other socio-economic benefits such as economic growth and job creation, and industrial competitiveness.

Hydrogen has many obstacles to navigate in order to reach its full potential and importantly for communities to enjoy the full benefit of cleaner power, commercial opportunities and jobs growth.

If green hydrogen is to make a significant contribution to achieving a net zero energy supply in the future, it will need to be produced (1) cost-efficiently (2) in large quantities, and (3) using low-carbon methods. Additional obstacles include the transport and storage of hydrogen but the biggest of these obstacles is cost.

Currently, Green Hydrogen is expensive to generate, transport and use. This is no different to any new technologies as they come to market, cost is almost always the greatest initial hurdle but costs fall significantly, as the technology deployment pathway gathers speed.

As we create the EU Green H2 Highway, centrally generated green hydrogen is being used to satisfy large-scale geographic and technology-specific demand for example in public transport with hydrogen-powered buses. However, as with other technologies that tackle our CO2 footprint this requires government subsidies to kick-start the process and to sustain through the growth phase of implementation.

Many governments and communities across Europe have high hopes and expectations that hydrogen may become the energy source of the future. The EU Commission has recently presented a new strategy for using hydrogen as a source of energy.

Many policymakers regard Green Hydrogen as a ‘silver bullet’ but Mark Welsh from Irish based company Energia who are the leading industrial partner in the innovative GenComm project describes green hydrogen as ‘silver buckshot.’

Mark uses this term to reflect the many solutions where green hydrogen can be utilised as part of a hybrid solution to achieve net-zero by 2050. Mark states’ Green hydrogen is a key ingredient in the recipe for net zero in our energy mix.

As an energy vector it can be used as a single solution or as part of a ‘solution of choice’ or in a power-to-X (P2X) solution where the consumer chooses what energy mix is best suited to their technical, geographical or environmental need.

In short green hydrogen has a myriad of applications and is a key energy decarbonisation catalyst closing one of the many gaps in the energy transition strategy’

The versatility of hydrogen as an energy vector can be highlighted in achieving sector coupling, enabling greater renewable energy sources to be integrated into the energy system, in the provision of reliable storage capacity and addressing renewables intermittency. Ireland attracted 165 foreign direct investment (FDI) projects in 2020, placing it ninth on the European league table of the most attractive investment destinations. The EY European Attractiveness Survey 2021, published today, reports that while Ireland experienced a drop in investment projects since 2019 (from 191) it has maintained its position in first place for the greatest number of projects per capita.

The report examines the performance and perceptions of Europe as a destination for FDI and includes a survey of 550 international investors looking at the impact of COVID-19 on their investment decisions.

EY’s analysis demonstrates that while Ireland’s number of FDI projects has now dropped for the second consecutive year, this is largely due to a “Brexit bounce” that occurred in 2018 which saw a record 205 projects.

Looking more broadly at the trend for Ireland over the past five years, we have maintained a steadily high level of FDI at an average of 167 projects per annum. The US continues to be the most active investor country into Ireland, accounting for 58% of projects, followed by the UK (17%) and Germany (5%).

Commenting on the data, Feargal de Freine, Assurance Partner and Head of FDI, EY Ireland said: “Our data illustrates how FDI was impacted across Europe in 2020 as the pandemic took hold. Despite our own reduction in FDI in line with our European peers, Ireland has held up well and in the last three years alone, we have secured over 550 projects which is truly remarkable for a country of our size.

The strength of Ireland’s track record in FDI can also be seen in our GDP and more specifically the tax records for 2020 which were only down by 3.6% despite the devastating impacts of COVID-19, helping to facilitate the significant level of financial support given by Government to firms and individuals during the pandemic.”

Looking at the insights from over 550 global investors, the report also predicts that investment will rebound this year, with 40% of investors saying they plan to establish or expand operations in Europe in the next 12 months. Reflecting long-term optimism in Europe as an investment destination, 63% believe Europe’s attractiveness will improve during the next three years, with only 5% saying they think it will deteriorate. Meanwhile, 80% believe Western Europe in particular will be the most attractive global location for FDI post COVID-19.

With the EU Green Deal in place and ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Europe by 55% by 2030, it’s no surprise that 92% of respondents stated environmental sustainability was either critical or important to their investment strategy. Furthermore, the availability of talent with technology skills was deemed critical or important to 89% of investors, demonstrating the significant role that digital skills will have on Europe’s attractiveness in the future.

Feargal commented: “What we’re seeing in our data is that investor interest in Europe has not waned despite the pandemic and the inevitable reduction in FDI projects that we have witnessed in the past year. However, what has changed is that companies are now seeking to establish more diverse supply chains capable of insulating against future geo-political events. In tandem with this, the tech talent within and sustainability credentials of the countries they are seeking to invest in, have never been more critical decision drivers.

“Talent has always been key to investors – and now more than ever, tech talent – therefore it’s critical that Ireland continues to invest in STEM education in particular to ensure we have a strong pipeline of talent to feed further FDI. Equally, the importance of sustainability has only grown during the pandemic, with consumers, employees and policy makers increasingly placing the protection of the planet and resources front of mind in their decision making. FraudSMART, the fraud awareness initiative led by Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI), is today warning consumers of the rise in cryptocurrency investment scams with victims being conned out of sums of money up to €50,000.

Highlighting the prominence of these scams and risks involved, Brian Hayes, Chief Executive, BPFI said: “There is currently a lot of hype around the benefits of investing and trading in digital currencies which has prompted much advertising by legitimate investment companies looking for new customers.

However, this has provided the perfect opportunity for fraudsters who are creating bogus companies offering fake ‘get rich quick’ crypto investment opportunities and promising big returns for little investment and effort.”

“Member banks are reporting a large increase in digital currency scams in the last 12 months and we are aware of cases where customers have been conned out of as much as €50,000. In many cases, this money can be people’s life savings the loss of which can have devastating effects.

However, we are also aware of cases where customers are seeking to take out loans for these investment scams. Traditionally investment type scams are targeted at those over 55 who have retirement savings, however, our members are now seeing an increase in cases among those in their 20s who have higher levels of disposable incomes due to the current pandemic.”

“Victims tend to be cold-called or lured by pop-up ads on social media which can often be accompanied by fake celebrity endorsements. The social media ads are linked to cloned websites that look genuine and offer a big return on cryptocurrency investments which turn out to be bogus.

Individuals actively seeking out alternative investment products are also being caught out as the fraudsters are very convincing and in all cases will create a sense of urgency and pressure not to lose out on a great deal.”

“Criminals will go to great lengths to persuade you they are knowledgeable and professional, offering you big returns for little investment and effort. But remember, if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. We are urging all consumers to take heed of our warning today and to seek professional advice before making investment decisions.” Mr Hayes concluded.

Red flags to look out for:

You are cold called, i.e., you receive an unexpected telephone call/e-mail/social media message about a great investment opportunity

You are rushed and pressured into making a decision there and then, with no opportunity or time to consider the investment opportunity.

There is a promise of a quick and profitable return on the investment with little or no risk

Checklist in order to avoid cryptocurrency scams:

Stop and think: Does this opportunity sound too good to be true? If so it probably is.

Research thoroughly: Check the individual and firm for qualifications, credentials, reputation and history.

Verify the Information: Check all information with a trusted 3rd party such a legal/financial professional and consult family and close friends.

Take your time: Important to note that there are very few legitimate investment opportunities that require you to hand over or transfer money immediately.

SSE Renewables has unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art development at Arklow Harbour, Co. Wicklow, proposed as part of Arklow Bank Wind Park Phase 2.

The renewable energy developer has revealed official designs for the Operations and Maintenance Facility (OMF) proposed for the South Dock in Arklow Harbour and is inviting the public to share their views during a Public Consultation which runs from 7-25 June.

The facility will act as the support base for the offshore wind farm over its operational lifetime.

The development is a key component of the planned Phase 2 520MW Arklow Bank Wind Park, located 6km to 13km off the coast of Arklow, Co. Wicklow. SSE Renewables is actively progressing its plans to deliver Ireland’s first offshore wind farm of scale by 2025 and expects to invest between €1 billion and €2 billion to deliver the project.

Delivery of the planned Operations and Maintenance Facility at Arklow Harbour’s South Dock will require an expected investment of around €15 million. SSE Renewables is proposing to develop the facility at a disused site known as The Old Shipyard. Approximately 60 construction roles will be created during the delivery phase of the Operations and Maintenance Facility alone, and additional indirect supply chain roles are expected.

Once complete, the building will accommodate around 80 full-time employees who will be recruited to work on the wind farm once it becomes operational. These direct jobs will include site managers, supervisors, technicians, control room operators, engineers, vessel crew, stores and administration staff. The wider wind park project will also support thousands of indirect and induced jobs over the project’s lifetime.

The four-storey development for Arklow’s South Dock has been designed to be a ‘Nearly Zero Energy Building’ (NZEB), meaning the building will operate to a very high energy performance. The facility will accommodate warehousing for wind turbine components, office and meeting space and staff welfare facilities.

Plans are also in place to provide a Sustainable Development Centre on the top floor overlooking the Harbour which will anchor the facility in the community and welcome visitors for educational tours, exhibitions and sustainability-themed events.

Urban realm improvements are also planned for the site including landscaping and improved public lighting.

The nearshore element of the plans will see the existing disused syncrolift removed from the Harbour’s dockside and replaced with berthing and pontoon facilities for crew transfer vessels (CTVs) which will transfer maintenance employees to and from the turbines on a daily basis to help operate the offshore wind park.

SSE Renewables will lodge a planning application with Wicklow County Council later this Summer for the proposed development. Ahead of that, the company has launched a three-week Public Consultation which is open now and running to 25 June. The consultation will provide an opportunity for members of the public and stakeholders to engage with SSE Renewables on its plans and submit feedback to further inform the development of the facility.

James O’Hara, Arklow Bank Wind Park Project Manager said: “We are delighted to share plans for the Operations and Maintenance Facility which will act as the support base for Arklow Bank Wind Park Phase 2. This state-of-the-art building will play a crucial role in kickstarting the regeneration of Arklow Harbour.

It is also from this building where 80 full-time employees will be based for decades to come. I encourage the local community to share feedback on this element of the project so we can refine our plans accordingly before we seek planning approval later this year.”

Andre Negri, Architect and Founder of Dublin-based Studio Negri, was commissioned to design the Operations and Maintenance Facility said: “I was delighted to have the opportunity to work on the Arklow Bank Wind Park Phase 2, which is a trailblazing project, both onshore and offshore.

As GMIT strives to become a technological university, along with our Connacht Ulster Alliance partners IT Sligo and Letterkenny IT, there is growing evidence of the quality and impact of our research in a number of disciplines.

“Our ambition includes being able to make a strong impact in our region through excellent research, and it’s heartening to see this recognised and acknowledged through our membership of Lero,” she added.

Dr Rick Officer, GMIT Vice President for Research and Innovation, said Lero’s large and strong team of researchers are crucial to keeping Ireland at the forefront of software design and innovation. Their efforts have helped make Ireland a location renowned internationally for software research and development.

“GMIT’s academic and research teams now look forward to enriching Lero’s research teams and infrastructures. Combining our knowledge of Lero’s strategic priority sectors will extend Lero’s technological developments and better realise social and economic benefits for the people and industries we serve,” he added.

Lero, founded in 2005 with four universities working on the theme of software engineering research, has now grown to 12 higher-education institutes (HEIs), including GMIT along with the University of Limerick, Dublin City University, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, Maynooth University, National University of Ireland Galway, University College Cork, Dundalk Institute of Technology, Munster Technological University, Waterford Institute of Technology and Limerick Institute of Technology.
