In this episode of Beyond Dieting, we talk about the concept of a liquid diet reset and when that concept could be harmful or helpful.
To be clear, we will NOT be telling you whether you should (or should not) do a liquid diet reset as a weight loss tool. Each person is different and can make her own choice. What we want to discuss is the mindset underneath the desire for a reset - to continue our discussion this month on the importance of mindset on your self care journey.
As a disclaimer - there are potential drawbacks and risks associated with a liquid diet reset. There is the potential for nutrient deficiencies, muscle loss if you experience rapid weight loss or stop exercising, fatigue and dizziness which can lead to motor skill accidents. You might want to consult with your health care professional before starting a liquid reset.
There are other types of ‘resets’ and detoxes’ and lots of reasons that you might choose to participate in one of these: sugar detox, caffeine detox, whole foods reset, intermittent fasting. And there are some that don’t relate to food: digital detox, a sleep reset, a work reset or detox. We are going to be using a liquid detox for discussion because it’s something both of us have done throughout our lives and we have questioned each other and ourselves about why and how we manage our personal liquid resets or detoxes.
Ultimately, studies show that having a more positive mindset (i.e. your thoughts) will bring a better outcome for you.
Also, your experience will be more one of pleasure when you choose a plan or protocol that feels enjoyable and doable. If going to a full liquid plan feels hard and painful, don’t do it! If you are determined to do some kind of reset, then choose a reset method that IS enjoyable and feels doable.
The takeaway is that you can do (or not do) a liquid reset, depending on what seems healthy for you. In all likelihood, you will be more successful with the intent behind the reset (i.e. what results you want to achieve as a result of doing it) when your mindset is less punitive and more supportive.
