In this episode of Beyond Dieting, we talk about your fear of regaining weight.
Unfortunately, science has shown that the very thing you fear, gaining weight, is more likely to happen BECAUSE you are fearful.
Mimi loves to define words (she likes to be precise). For this reason we are including this definition here. "Fear: an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat."
Living in fear of danger and pain caused by potential weight gain causes you to live your life armored up against this dangerous threat - a threat that’s ready to swoop in and ruin your life. It’s a fear that can swim through your mind like an 8-foot-long alligator waiting to pounce.
So the question becomes, “If I have this fear-based thinking, and I know that continuing to think these fearful thoughts is likely to make me gain weight or stall or plateau in my weight loss journey, then what do I do to turn this around?”
One mindset process we teach is LIFT. Lift is an acronym that stands for:
I - Investigate your thoughts
T - Think a slightly better thought
It would look something like this if you applied this process to your fears around weight Regain.
L - Try Square breathing to soothe your nervous system
I - Notice the exact phrase or thought and write it down (writing it down is important), In this case the thought is, “I won’t be able to keep the weight off.”
F - Next, what emotions come up with this thought? Sadness, hopelessness, anger (at yourself)
T - Play around with a slightly better thought like, “I am committed to learning how to keep this weight off and putting my knowledge into practice.
This is exactly what we help you do in our programs. It’s taking the teeth out of those scary fights and then shifting your thoughts to thoughts that are more likely to create success for you.
Remember that your fears have not served you. It’s time they took a back seat to better thoughts.
