In this episode of Beyond Dieting, we talk about two phrases common to all women everywhere. “I’ve gotten off track” and “I need to get back on track” - You could apply this concept of “on track” and “off track” to any form of self care that you have planned to do regularly such as going to bed early or drinking enough water each day, but it is very common to hear this language applied to food and exercise.
What does ‘off track’ really mean? Usually, what you might mean is that you have established rules around food (or exercise) that you feel you’ve broken. And you might feel that if you’ve broken a rule, you’ve failed or done something REALLY bad. Like maybe your breakfast today was a cinnamon roll and one of your food rules is that you don’t start your day with sugar. The angst that can follow this cinnamon roll can far outweigh what that item of food means to your body in reality.
If you forget to brush your teeth one night before bed, do you suffer with thoughts of failure and never being able to stick to anything? Do you fear that dire things will happen to your teeth as a result of one night? Most likely not. You probably forget it quickly and move on.
But diet culture has spent so much time and money convincing you that if you aren’t seeing the results they promise, you are the problem - not them. And because they don’t want to be seen as the problem, they’ve convinced you that one tiny slip absolves them of any failure and puts it squarely on your shoulders. Perfection is a heavy standard to live up to. And it exists as a thought in your mind. Your thought is that making a mistake is bad and wrong.
You hold on to these thoughts and believe them so completely that they become a truth to you. They actually change your actions and outcomes. You literally become two different people with different eventualities when you believe one of two opposing thoughts. If you believe the thought that you are “off track”, you become one kind of person who gets “off track” results. If you believe in the thought, “Even though yesterday I did not follow my food plan exactly, today, I’m going to follow my food plan”, you become another kind of person who gets “follow the food plan” results.
So if your plan is to be vegetarian and yesterday, in addition to all the vegetables and whole foods you ate, you had chicken for some reason. Today you can simply eat a vegetarian diet and omit animal protein.
You also have total freedom to decide that on occasion you might choose to eat fish or chicken - and that is okay.
In an earlier podcast we talked about how your thoughts are the #1 tool you have as you work on your self-care goals. And we think that’s especially true if your goal is weight loss.
We base our thought work model on the work of Byron Katie. In fact, later in this month, we’ll have an episode in which we review her book “Loving What Is” - So feel free to read the book in preparation for that episode OR wait for our review of the book to decide if you want to read it!
In this episode, all we want you to see is that you can question your thoughts around food and the language you use to tell yourself the story about what is happening when you don’t do everything 100% perfectly.
