The Think Report

Is Fascism Back?

Listen Later

The word fascist gets thrown around constantly in modern political debate. Politicians, voters, journalists, and activists use it as an all-purpose insult. But what does fascism actually mean?

In this episode of The Think Report, we step back from the noise and look at the real history behind the term. Drawing on political theory, journalism, and historical research, we break down fascism explained through the work of scholars like Umberto Eco and Robert Paxton. We examine how fascism developed in Italy under Benito Mussolini, how it evolved in Germany under Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, and how it connected to the rise of ultranationalism, antisemitism, and authoritarian rule that led into WW2 after the turmoil of WW1.

But history alone isn’t the whole story. We also explore how the word fascism is used in modern news, geopolitics, and political discourse. Are current political movements actually fascist, or are we confusing nationalism, populism, and strong leadership with authoritarianism?

The episode also examines the debate between fascism and Marxism, looking at the ideas of Karl Marx and why some scholars argue that authoritarian systems can emerge from both ideological extremes. What separates fascism from Marxist systems, and why do these ideologies sometimes appear to “rhyme” in practice?

Finally, we look at the real warning signs historians point to when democracies begin to slide toward dictatorship. These include erosion of institutional trust, concentration of emergency powers, suppression of dissent, and the collapse of political moderation.

If the word fascism is going to mean anything, we have to understand it clearly.
