Filipina on the Rise

“Is it mental illness, or is it your trauma from colonization?” Healing Generational Trauma and Making Space for Emotions with Licensed Psychotherapist Monica Ramil

Listen Later

Monica Ramil is a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist in San Francisco, and the owner of Monica Ramil Therapy, providing telehealth across California. Her mission is to help Filipina/x, women and couples work through anxiety, communication, family/relationship wounds, self-defeating thoughts & old patterns. Monica is particularly passionate about helping others work through intergenerational trauma and the insidious, ongoing effects of colonization, while also helping them connect to their inner wisdom.

In this episode we’ll cover…

  • Making space for multiple emotions
  • Exploring the colonial mentality when it comes to Western Therapy
  • How to listen to different forms of wisdom
  • Patterns Monica has observed within the Filipino community around therapy needs, mental health and healing
  • Finding your inner voice and allowing yourself to take up space, authentically, in front of others

Importance of Episode
The space of mental health, being such a new thing in itself, is not a talked about thing in our culture. It's a taboo topic… which makes it all that more important to talk about. There are so many common themes throughout our families: like silent suffering, previous generations’ unaddressed traumas, spiritual bypassing to name a few. Many of us never think to connect the dots and therapy helps us connect those dots and move forward in a way our parents were never able to.
