But, with the digital age creating different fitness trackers and apps, is it outdated?
Exercise science expert from Griffith University, Dr Joel Garrett, told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "The story at the end of the day, it is still a very good test."
"It is still low cost, it's easy to implement in a vast different varieties, and it can give you a really good indication of VO2 max, but it certainly has its limitations and it might not always be applicable in every environment," Dr Garrett continued.
