The Table Winnipeg

Is Your God Ready for the Future?

Listen Later

We are surrounded by the future. On my drive home yesterday I heard a radio interview with a Swiss scientist who had earlier in the week been one of the speakers at a funeral for a glacier. There were two other speakers, including a priest from the small village at the foot of the mountain that had been the glaciers home. I wish I could have heard what that priest had to say. Today (Friday) is a day of action regarding climate change. Many of us have probably encountered the “take no prisoners” passion of Greta Thunberg;we’ve heard her say that if those with power do not act, it makes them evil. Moral language in response to scientific information. Interesting, for sure.

I could go on without having to do any research, because we are surrounded by change. In this particular instance I’ve been writing about the changing climate, but there are any number of other ways the world around us is going through shifts of such magnitude that they are wrenching us as humans loose from moorings that felt solid only a few years (or maybe even only days) ago. For many people, what we believe about the cosmos, the universe, the Divine, is where we turn when the tangible gets complex and troubling. But what happens when the presuppositions of the founders of a religion don’t hold up, or when the framework we were handed for God turns out to be predicated on something that we can now see isn’t literally true? Do we choose, as many do, to willfully ignore those problems and call that “being faithful”? Or do we ask some hard questions about whether or not our “god concept” is ready for the future? I’m going with “option b”. This Sunday the Talky Bit will begin an exploration that raises some questions that spring from possible ways the future that is already here might impact our concepts of God. Buckle up…:)
Kids Table will be in full cry. There will be coffee. Even if you don’t like coffee, when it’s getting close to freezing at night there is something kinda cozy about that smell.
We’ll be meeting at Creative Manitoba (4th floor) around 10:30 a.m.. Also, a heads up about our gathering on October 6th (the weekend before Thanksgiving). We will be at the U of W that weekend, in the “castle turret” of Wesley Hall. It’s a one-off, and we’ll be back to Creative the following week. More details as we get closer to the date.
I’ll see you on Sunday.
Peace,
Tim Plett
