        • John Eldredge and Experiencing Jesus for Real: The RE-RELEASE!

We're going back about a year and a half into the Misfit Vault of Greatness

(a term I just now made up) to a great conversation back in March 2025
with John Eldredge about his latest book, "Experience Jesus. Really".
If you didn't catch it, you'll love it. Cause hey, it's John Eldredge. Really. (see what I did there?)
And if you did, well then you are very welcome for the chance to give it another listen.

          Enjoy!

          ****************************************************************************************************
          ORIGINAL SHOWNOTES

I so wanted to title this episode "JOHN ELDREDGE TAKES US ON A MAGICAL MYSTICAL MISFIT TOUR..." But it was a little long. Not to mention way too alliterative. And I also didn't want to scare you off. Because the truth is, being a Mystic is not about being "magical". And it's also not about "wild woowoo, ecstatic visions or something" (that's a direct quote by JE, btw). So what IS it about then? Well, let's start with his (and by his I mean NY Times best-selling author and president of Wild at Heart Ministry's) newly released MUST READ book "Experience Jesus. Really." Cause the title kind of says everything. It's about the reality that experiencing the healing, joyful, playful, life-giving, restorative. wonder-filled presence of the living God (aka Jesus, just to keep us all on the same page) is available to ANYONE who wants it. Not just the few and the proud. But you. Me. Anyone really, who's willing to seek it, and make space for it, in our ordinary, every day lives. Cause who wouldn't want that? And then we talk about the how. How does one actually make space for these types of encounters in one's ordinary, every day life? That, my Misfit Friends, is what this podcast is about! Plus, we play a fantastic round of NAME THAT MYSTIC... Because what other Stupid Game would do for such a time as this?

        • Elizabeth Laing Thompson is In Season

Well, here in the good old USA, it's the end of the summer season, and you know what that means:  Back to School.  And if you're a parent of a student, you know what THAT means:  time to gear up for school sports! [insert your own marching band pep rally music here]

And in keeping with the changing seasons, we have a special treat, just for you (and for our veteran Misfits, an especially special treat):  author, speaker, encourager and lover of all things coffee, Elizabeth Laing Thompson, is back with us on the Isle... and she's just as delightful as ever.

It's been a minute (as the kids say) since we've caught up with her, and caught up we did.  Perhaps in part due to all the coffee, she's been up to an awful lot, most recently, a brand new devotional book just for the female athlete in your life called (what else) "In Season:  A 90 Day Devotional for Female Student Athletes to Build Faith, Strengthen Confidence, and Train a Growth Mindset".
That's a lot to promise from 230 pages but I promise you it's not all hype. In fact, though it's definitely geared for athletes, I'd dare say there's something in this for anyone who just needs some practical, Truth based (ie. the B-I-B-L-E) encouragement.

Oh, and the Stupid Game?   No spoiler alerts, but let's just say I'm not kidding when I say Elizabeth loves her coffee.  In fact, you can play along yourself, and see what kind of Starbucks barista you are here:  buzzfeed.com/dannicaramirez/survive-a-shift-as-starbucks-barista-quiz

Get the devo, and learn more about Elizabeth Laing Thompson here : https://lizzylife.com/ (she's got all kinds of other great books to peruse... and did I mention how funny she is?  Cause she is!)

        • Dudley Delffs and The Faith Of Dolly Parton

Look what I found digging through the Misfit Archives!

From all the way back in June of 2018,  it seems fitting to listen to this wonderful conversation with Dudley Delffs about the one, the only, and the irreplaceable Dolly Parton... or as The Babylon Bee put it, the last remaining universally beloved human, who has now gone on to Glory. Lots of alliteration in this episode  (Dudley Delffs... Divine Doses of Dolly... you get the idea), not to mention a spot on Stupid Game where you get to decide  if we're throwing out fun or false facts about the Smoky Mountain Songbird.

The world will be reeling from this tremendous loss for a while.
But what she leaves behind, more than her outrageous talent, her crazy generosity, even her infectious joy, is a legacy of faith.
And even though I never met her, I'm pretty sure she'd tell us that's the greatest legacy she could have left.

You can find out more about Dudley here:  https://www.dudleydelffs.com/index.htm
And of course, get his delightful book "The Faith of Dolly Parton"

          From June 26, 2018:
Maybe you've loved her for years... maybe you're barely aware of her enormous impact, not just in country music, but as a prolific songwriter, actor, philanthropist and literacy advocate (yes, you read that right). Whatever you know (or don't know) about her, you will be inspired and dare I say encouraged by this conversation with author Dudley Delffs about Dolly, and the faith that has fueled her to inspire so many.

        • The Replay of The Return Of Kyle Mann

Going back in the Misfit Archives to the year of our Lord 2024... to a very special episode with a very special return guest- none other than Kyle Mann, Editor of the Babylon Bee.   How we got him on the Isle I will never be able to fully explain.  But let's enjoy our good fortune I say!

          ********************************************************************************************************************

Kyle Mann, you heard me, not a cheap fake AI version but THE real life Editor in Chief of the Babylon Bee shocks us all by returning to the Isle after a 4 year hiatus. And so much has happened in those 4 years. For starters, he got WAY more famous from all that Babylon Bee satire stuff putting them on the map in a major way... he starred in an epic docudrama "January 6th: The Most Deadliest Day", and if that wasn't enough, he also (finally) read the book That Hideous Strength. We talk about all that... plus PNut the Squirrel. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll learn more about Wonder Woman 1984 than you ever wanted to know. This is one podcast that we do not recommend you miss, because you will do so at your own peril. But hey, it's up to you.

Who doesn’t want a second chance?

Put that hand down, cause I don’t believe you.
For the rest of you, we've got a special treat:  Jennie K. Drollinger, winner of 2025 America’s Favorite Couple (with her husband Bryan) joins us to talk about her real life second chance story, as told in “As Sure as the Stars” a book she collaborated with award winning best selling author Tricia Goyer.

It's got all the fairy tale elements and nostalgia of your favorite 80's rom com (and we all know 80's movies are THE BEST)...  Love... heartache... and an unlikely reunion... all set again the beautiful backdrop of the Alaskan bush... not to mention all the big hair, tubular fashion and stellar music (Def Leppard, anyone?).

GenXers Activate! Play along with Jennie and see how, like, totally awesome you do with our stellar Stupid Game: 80's Trivia Edition.

But most of all, like we said, this episode is about second chances, and how God writes better stories of redemption than we ever could... exceedingly and abundantly far above all we could ask or think (hey, that's in the Bible, I think!)

          • Allen Arnold and the Creativity Glitch Part 2

In this second half of a compelling conversation with Allen Arnold on all things CREATIVE and GLITCHY, we take a deep dive into the topic of questions; that is, the importance of not being in a rush to get to the answers, but to spend time in the questions themselves... what happens when we skip over that process,... the relationship of intimacy to abundance... all this and more, all addressed in his wonderful new book "The Creativity Glitch".

Maybe you know a creative who's been glitching out and needs some encouragement?  Or maybe you know someone who doesn't even know how innovative they are and needs a reminder? Either way, this is one of those episodes that'll hit (as the kids say) and inspire the Creative Misfit in your life!

          • Allen Arnold and the Creativity Glitch, Part 1

When it comes to GLITCHES in life, I think we can all relate, amIright?

But when it comes to CREATIVITY...well, that's another story.

Not everyone thinks of themselves as creative. But THAT is where they're wrong, and that's what Allen Arnold,  (who has achieved Most Favored and Frequent Misfit Status) is here to talk with us about today on the Isle.
            Creativity and Glitches.

In fact, he wrote a whole book about it, called The Creativity Glitch.  And it's for everyone, because EVERYONE is wired to create. That's right, it's not just the artsy bohos wearing the weird clothes (though you know we love you).  It's for you conservative polo shirt wearers as well.  Cause the fact is, we are ALL created by our Creator  to co-create, and make this world a better place.  But he says it much better than me. That's why you should listen.

It's one of two parts, by the way... just because we want to give you a chance to ponder it all... and ponder you should.

You can also play along with this episode's Stupid Game, and compare your random answers to random  topics with Allen's (he's got some good ones).  In fact why not write us ([email protected]) with your favorite- we love random answers!

Can you believe we've been Owning Our Awkward on the Isle for almost 9 years???

And in all that time, we've never re-released an episode?  What were we thinking?
            Well, that ends today!

This summer, we're going to dig up some old episodes that are too good not to hear again... and we're kicking it off with author and nationally syndicated radio host Brant Hansen. He stopped by the Isle back in 2024  to talk about, oh lots of things. Things like owning our awkwardness (music to our Misfit ears). Getting FREE from being NEEDY (for approval... the key for creativity, btw). Getting FREE from PERFECTIONISM. Getting FREE to OFFER WHO YOU ARE. Lots of FREEDOM in this podcast! Oh, and if it's that not enough, I think you'll enjoy this episode's STUPID GAME: Cruise Edition We even touch on his passion and involvement with CURE.ORG, a Jesus shaped mission, literally healing kids around the world. Of course, we talk about his brand new book "Life is Hard. God is Good. Let's Dance". Aaaaand, did you know he wrote another one called "Blessed are the Misfits"? I know.
