This is nice basic introduction to clouds, meteorology and earth science!
Many people enjoy looking at clouds imagining they see certain shapes or objects in them. Perhaps you've heard someone say something like, "That cloud looks just like a dog!" There are other things to look at when you look at clouds. There are different kinds and when you are a "cloud watcher" you know what they are called. You will also know what kind of weather may be on the way. In this book you will learn about cirrus, cumulus, and stratus clouds. A man named Luke Howard "named the clouds using Latin words" that are still used to this day.
Cirrus clouds are approximately "30,000 feet (9,144 meters) above Earth" and indicate nice weather. Cumulus clouds are those nice fluffy looking ones that "often have flat bottoms." They are sometimes quite awe inspiring to watch. The dark gloomy looking clouds are called stratus and they "hang low in the sky, waiting to spill rain." You probably have been in a cloud and may not have realized it. Fog is a cloud that hugs the ground and "is produced when air is warmer than land." In this book you will learn the definition of clouds, the fact that they move in all directions, that some move slowly while others quickly, you'll learn about meteorologists, and will see other children taking a look at the clouds.
This is a basic introduction to clouds, meteorology and earth science. I like the fact that although the reading level in this book is not high (grades 1-2, ages 6-7), the proper scientific names for clouds are used. Science and a bit of literary license are often woven together for a nice effect. For example, it is stated that "You can watch for clouds as soft and wispy as bird feathers. These are called cirrus clouds." One page has a photograph of floating feathers and the next has a photograph of cirrus clouds. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, and additional book and website resources. If you want to make some clouds there is an interesting "recipe" for them in this book!
