Sad cost cutting by Frederick Warne
By mistake I ordered another copy of this book when I already had the previous edition so I could compare side by side what was previously printed in Italy and is now printed in China.
It makes for a very sad comparison.
The Italian edition is nothing short of beautiful. The paper is smoother, every illustration has better contrast; the colors are richer. The typography on the cover, first few pages and the binder just looks better. The font sizes and arrangements are chosen perfectly.
Worse the typography on the cover of this edition is so poorly designed that the white text on the light green background is completely illegible when read from the shelf.
At the same time the Canadian and UK price printed on the book have gone up a dollar and a pound respectively. US price stayed the same. A little strange when the Canadian dollar has been appreciating over the US dollar over the period.
Potter's books are a national treasure; it's so sad to see the publisher's so blatantly cash in by reducing their costs, off-shoring and at the same time putting up the price. Ka-ching.
Tip to readers: look out for the previous edition with a white cover, printed in Italy. A far superior product.
The story in both editions however remains enchanting. A timeless classic.

Just to add I've nothing against books printed in China; I have many beautifully produced editions from other publishers that are expertly and perfectly printed in China. Sadly though this book is not one of them.
I also noticed that some of my other previous edition Potter books were Printed in China and the quality is on par with the Printed in Italy (from the same edition series). So I think it's potentially not so much the fact they are printed in China but some poor decisions made for this new edition that has seen the overall quality of the product decline.
You simply CANNOT go wrong with the tales of Beatrix ...
You simply CANNOT go wrong with the tales of Beatrix Potter!!! Every baby who comes into my life's circle - family, friends, you name it - gets a copy of her complete tales. As I am 67 years young now, there have been quite a few. The only reason I checked "Some violence" is because of the unfortunate incident when Mr. Fisher caught the stickleback fish. I'm quite sure that it would not disturb most children (or other people) in the least. It's a story about nature, as all of Miss Potter's are, and nature does involve many things that some folks would prefer not to deal with.
Great for Kids!!
My godson Vincent is 4yrs old and loves Beatrix Potter. His mom let me know that he has two books out of the set, but wanted more for Christmas. As a baby my room was decorated in Beatrix Potter so ordering these books was like reliving my childhood. They are basically the size of an adult hand, but hard cover so he can try to read and not ruin the book. I will definitely be ordering more for his collection!
One of my all-time favorites
