It’s Electric! has been in heavy discussions lately about Personal Electric Transportation and the policies that govern them. In this week’s episode, Afeez is joined by Terenig Topjian to talk about how the laws being considered makes sense, how they don’t, and how they could be improved upon. He also stresses the importance of basing policy on actually data, and why using existing bike laws as a precedent may not be such a bad idea.
“Are we applying car logic to this problem?”
“When you pass a law, it’s usually because there is a problem and you want to address it”
“Why are we comparing these things to cars? We should be comparing them to bicycles”
“Speed is what dictates safety and danger”
“Mobility should be a human right”

Welcome to It’s Electric! with Afeez Kay. This week, we’re welcoming the extremely creative Michael Quintana onto the show to talk about electric unicycles. They weren’t always the beautiful works of art they are today. Once upon a time they were clunky and felt more like a gimmick than a viable means of transportation. But in modern times, these personal electric vehicles are serious business. They save people money, help with the congestion issues in major city centres, and even put the riders in a better mood for the rest of the day (and who doesn’t want to be in a better mood?). As they grow in popularity, the policy creators and lawmakers are finding themselves uneducated and behind the times, and as a result, they’re holding back progress that could be made in making our world a cleaner and better place. Today Afeez and Michael geek out about their favourite models, the benefits of riding, and what needs to change to make the experience a better one.
“It’s not that you don’t want the exercise, but you don’t want to get to work hot and sweaty”
“This can actually expand the gap and actually be the whole mile”
“It’s, hand down, the best looking wheel on the planet right now”
“Weather changes the game. Even road surface changes the game.”
“People automatically assume it’s dangerous”
“You’re not going to ban feet because someone walked into traffic, are you?”

Jean Jose Garcia Monila joins Afeez on today’s episode of It’s Electric! to discuss legislation in Ireland, and how it impacts the use of rideable electric vehicles. With more electric scooters, skateboards and unicycles hitting the streets, it’s obvious that people are noticing the positive change they can make. The problem is that with their growing popularity, it’s becoming more difficult to navigate the laws surrounding them. In some countries see them as toys, rather than motorized vehicles, they are barely regulated at all. Other countries have made them completely illegal, making it impossible to drive them without a plate and insurance, which is impossible to get presently. Police are beginning to crack down on riders, and the punishments seem small for now, but what are the possible ramifications? Why are law-makers impeding progress? How can we make the use of rideables not only legal, but completely safe in the eyes of the government and the general public? All of this and more will be discussed right here on this episode of It’s Electric!
“These vehicles are not toys, they are actually a viable means of transportation that can help reduce air pollution and congestion”
“Lately they have been cracking down”
“Electric rideables are the cleanest option right now besides walking and biking”

Billy currently belongs to Carve: a group of EV riders who are encouraging the use and enjoyment of rideable EVs and the culture that surrounds them. Billy’s main objective is to get EV riders together to enjoy and share their passion. Regardless of what EV you’re currently using, there is room to ride with Billy and the rest of his crew. In this episode of It’s Electric! Afeez and Billy discuss living in London, and how little it makes sense to drive a traditional car in the city, the top 3 electric skateboards for beginners, and why they are not and should not be considered toys. Pete got into EV’s after having a Eureka! moment. Shortly after, he closed down all of his companies, took every last dime he had, and started researching and investing in Electric Vehicle knowledge and information about charge points. That’s when Zero EV Ltd was born, and it has grown into a substantial company since. Pete’s outlook on business is simple: provide people with options, and information, and they will choose what’s right for them. In this episode, Pete and Afeez discuss which charge points Pete would purchase and install for personal use, how grants and incentives actually work, and what needs to happen in order to persuade more potential EV drivers to make the switch. Pete also shares that although Electric Vehicles are growing in popularity, there are still things that can be improved along the way.
“When you actually see them around, it’s actually too late. You have to see it before it comes”
“Not everybody's ready for this. They never will be. You can’t convince somebody against their will”
“For the uptake of Electric Vehicles to increase substantially, you need a better infrastructure”

After studying IT in college and spending time working in the defence sector, Mike decided to move into electric vehicles and while converting an internal combustion engine vehicle into an EV, he noticed a gap in the market, but also on the skill set of professionals within the young industry. His company has their sights set on consumers getting paid to plug in their cars, and they’re definitely leading the charge on that front, and gaining ground.
In This Episode
“It’s interesting how you can leave an industry and carry over a ton of skills”
“Our hobby business got too big to run from a personal bank account”
“We have the capacity already on the UK grid, we just don’t have it at the right times”
