Jabez: The Capacity To Carry

Listen Later

The most powerful part of Jabez’s story was not that he asked for his territory to be enlarged, but his refusal to let a label someone else gave him dictate his destiny.

We made this story about the enlargement. We missed the whole point.

Jabez’s story was about an identity shift. The enlargement was the result, not the point.

His mother named him Ya’bets. Pain. Sorrow. Grief. Not because of who he was. Because of what she went through.

But here’s what’s wild. Scripture says he was more honorable than his brothers. The Hebrew word is nikbad, from kabad, meaning weighty, heavy with glory, distinguished. God established who Jabez was before his mother ever named him. His honor wasn’t earned after the prayer. It was already there.

His mother saw it. And she still named him pain.

People can see exactly who you are and still name you something else because of their own experience. Jabez’s mother knew he was more honorable than his brothers. She recognized his value. But because of what she went through, she named him after her pain instead of his promise.

That tells me something. People can recognize who you are and still assign you an identity based on what they experienced. Your mother. Your pastor. Your ex. Your business partner. They can see your value and still hand you a name that has nothing to do with who God called you to be.

But you have the power to be who God has always said you are.

When Jabez prayed, he wasn’t just asking for more land. He was asking God to expand his capacity, increase his influence, and make sure that what someone else called him never became what he produced in the earth. His identity had to shift first. And when your identity shifts, you start building the capacity to carry what God already assigned to you.

You have to have the capacity to contain the enlargement. And you can’t do that when pain is taking up the space. You can’t build capacity for what God is expanding if you’re still building with an identity of pain. Pain fills the room where increase is supposed to go.

The enlargement requires space and space requires an identity shift.

I know this because I lived it. I built a seven-figure business. I walked away from all because of the calling and because I was building under an identity that was costing me my health, my family, and my peace.

The revenue was real and so was the misalignment.

I had to shift before I could carry what was next. The identity shifted. Now the capacity is being built.

How often do we allow labels and limitations to be placed on us when we have the power to decide differently? You may not control how the story started. But you get to decide how the story ends.

You’ve been asking God for enlargement. But the real question is whether you have the capacity to carry it. I teach the shift inside my paid community. Not the story. The framework. Not the inspiration. The rebuild.
