Sudan's history traces back to 1989 when army veteran Omar al-Bashir seized power in a coup, aiming to reshape the country under a brutal form of Islamic law. Despite his overthrow in 2019, violence persists under a transitional government, with a 2021 coup by military leaders sparking ongoing protests. The regime's corruption and economic exploitation have left millions impoverished, while power struggles between armed forces have escalated into large-scale conflicts. The humanitarian crisis deepens, with over half the population in need of aid, millions displaced, and reports of ethnic cleansing. Amidst collapsing healthcare and food insecurity, Sudan remains gripped by instability and suffering.
